  4. All sorted now. Thanks to those who highlighted the valve hole was misaligned with the inner tube. I welded the existing hole shut using a piece of copper as backing. I then re-drilled a 12mm hole in as central a position as possible. I ground and filed everything smooth, applied a dab of paint and reassembled the wheel. I was very relieved when the valve stem didn't disappear afterwards.

  12. Forgive my stupidity, whats the difference? What do you gain from this upgrade? Could these be made to fit an old 020T? Mine was playing up a bit today, working in the rain it took ages to warm up and occasionally a pain to keep running. Likely it needs a bit of adjustment.

Don't go near the water until the saw is stripped down and you have all the exists to the cylinder closed off. The water just helps you tell where a pressure leak is from the bubbles - its the best method out there. I remove as much as possible, cases, exhaust, starter mechanism etc.) Then as above you need to plug all bar one hole into the cylinder. I generally plug the exhaust port, spark plug hole and inlet manifold (behind the carb) and apply pressurized air to the impulse line. You can DIY a bike pump to do this. Once pressure is applied you might hear the leak but if not dunk the whole saw and test mechanism in a bucket of water to reveal where the bubbles are coming from. Then dry the saw out, it won't cause it any harm.

    APF24

Sounds like there were a few fair weather APFers! 😜 The rain on the Saturday was nothing really: barely more than drizzle for half an hour, with 5 mins of light rain, then it was all over. Nothing like we've had over the last 24 hours in the Midlands.

  16. Good review but might not be that helpful unless they are buying second hand. Still a very capable machine.

  22. No idea re its past history, except that I bought it through a club, a wealthy farmer in Kildare had had it, and had had it re-engined(by a genuinely gifted engineer) with an OM605 c/w a Dieselmekkan IP, and indeed it goes like stink once wound up, frighteningly so on the somewhat oversized tyres.. But I figure(ed), in hindsight, that after he had had the replacement engine fitted, he took it for a play on a beach, and dropped the pass side in an unseen hole, and the salt water got in the cill and pass footwell, cos the drivers side is not so afflicted, whereas on the pass side the heads of the seat box securing bolts were stupid rusted away as was the very front body mounting bolt head. And playing card sized slabs of rust 4 to 5mm thick falling out of the pass side drop-cill. But the son enjoys driving her, and since she is 1989 reg , a few more years will see her turned forty . . . so I figured I would invest some time on her. P.S. When I get her through the MOT, that will be 3 out of the 4 fully road legal, since I got the van restored professionally last year, and the wee red G turned 40 this year. So only 1 to go!, Another 1989 LWB 300GD, cept this one is origonal and unmolested with very good trim and carpets. Which vehicle the son in law, who is also big into his G Wagens wishes to do up properly with MB parts where required, because she is so unmolested and original. I bought the vehicle to be Senior Management's daily driver, but then got the opportunity to buy the automatic van a few months later. So I simply parked her up. Gibber, mutter an twitch.
  23. Spot on Mick. Big trees that ‘must be hundreds of years old’ turn out to be about 60. Live fast, die young, stay pretty.
  24. I would get a professional opinion with a site visit beech with meripilus will go over with no warning and virtually no wind, I would suggest the bomb is already ticking
  25. I suspect he just found the right button.
