  1. I handle a few knives as i don’t have the kit to forge or temper really. English handmade knives have everything you could want material wise from blades to bolsters, handle blocks and fancy materials. Slightly easier route into custom knife making. Mini belt grinder and a decent mask makes life a lot easier, most tropical woods will attack your respiratory system when sanding creating fine dust.
  2. Had new cars and then a T6 van in my old job, company car tax when employed is a killer! Had issues with all of them, Skoda octavia VRS - new gearbox at under 20k, in a tiny loan car for a month T6 blew boost and exhaust pipes for fun. under warranty but hassle. mates 4x4 T6 with most options is worth less than half the original price at 2yrs old with 100k on it and the warranty is gone now. But he still needs to use the main stealers to keep the finance package happy Mk6 Hilux i’m in now, needed nothing in the 8k i’ve owned it, (126k on the dial) it’s off-roaded, waded in floods etc and with a stereo upgrade i can voice texts, call, sat nav and reversing camera (£400 package) easily fitted in an hour or so. Old every time for me. just look it over well before buying
  3. For Firewood cutting All the same : eye and ear pro, class A trousers (as above chaps are for strippers) helmet - visor is useful, helmet not so much as nothing should be falling on your head!
  4. Technically will be classed as a smooth bore firearm... made potato cannons before both gas and compressed air power, sent a potato or tennis ball a bloody long way! Cops saw us with one on my mates farm and told us the law would see it as a shotgun essentially, showed it him in action and he said ‘don’t be stupid and don’t take it off your own land’ left is to it. Be careful using in public!
  5. Would people pay to bring in a specialist like that? Monster tree services in America does well it seems but he has his own crane etc I’m just starting on the climbing journey and find dismantles easier than prunes.
  6. back of the axe to smack them, failing that, tow rope to the 4x4 and pull!
  7. Yup love from husky technical i think after busting an ear off it faffing in a conifer reduction. Gold away ears are ace, took more setting up, once done it’s mega comfy and i find it doesn’t seem to get caught nearly as much.
  8. Deep stanley divider boxes (things you see joiners storing screws in..) clear lid so you can write on them.
  9. Make sure it’s strapped down well, use the lowest trailer you can find too as the infeed will be higher than normal, or use a plant trailer with rear ramps for your guys to walk up and feed it from a normal height..
  10. what he said
  11. Checkout kitesurf cut away releases, normally a pin with a toggle cord and two loops, releases under silly loads, easy to grab and safe when in place if you do want to hang off it still
  12. Got one i use on my bigger saw running a full chisel as it’s quicker for sure, means i’m more likely to spend 5 mins sharpening rather than just lazily swap a chain out. Will be getting more for the other chain options once i use my the existing files etc
  13. Yup, was told i can climb on any system i wish inc SRT by the assessor, didn’t use mine for the first climb (had them on the back of my harness to re climb after a rescue) got asked why i wasn’t using them. As long as they are lolered then all good
  14. Legally wise i bet the LR can carry more weight? I think we are all doing it wrong, transit should have a low rear chassis ramp maybe using airbags to lower it and pull a 3.5t trailer that can actually carry 2t plus. The transit is just used for gear and staff. Surprised no one has done this yet...
  15. drenaline here. lovely rope for both
  16. 4L a day is some heavy saw use? I moved to aspen and recently did my 30/31 course using their saw for the first days cutting and forgot how much i prefer Aspen, went back to my saw the next day. Work out how much fuel you use a week/month then you can get a true cost comparison and see how many less coffees a day would cover the difference
  17. Watch Cabstars for rust, my brother bought an older one 9yrs i think and the cab mounts were rusted through, floors pretty gone etc should be fine on newer stuff but worth underseal them if keeping long term
  18. Get the trigger release, can load up more and then release once aimed. Saw someone use a small pulley and some cord to the pouch to add mechanical advantage when pulling it back, my homemade big shot will go far higher than i can throw
  19. It’s a sad world we now live in, Thankful i’m in rural derbyshire so the most we get is the odd scuffle in the local, always from one of the youngsters mind ( can i say that being 34?!) Prison isn’t a punishment for most its an education in how to be better criminals, we treat offenders better than our old folk in this country and that’s barbaric.
  20. I am in a similar position buddy, different current job ( sales rep or was till last week when my redundancy ended lol) Got into tree climbing via nature programmes used my petzl climbing harness, bought a rope and prussic, watched some videos and off i went, slowly added tree specific kit when i knew i wanted to go in that direction. Started doing some part time tree work at weekends and using holiday time. This progressed to a silky in the tree then a chainsaw. Have now done 30/31 and 38. Really enjoying it and can now transition into semi full time tree work (also do some handyman stuff fitting kitchens, laying wood flooring etc) variety is the spice of life. Try and find some local tree climbers and go rec climbing, can learn a lot by example
  21. where are you based buddy?
  22. Bought a husky 445 as a small saw for my cs31, kept stalling from day one. idle was way out and top end was too low.
  23. Forgive me as i’m newly qualified (did my CS38 6wks ago) Wouldn’t we be using something like a petzl Asap for the 2nd system not a friction hitch /ZZ etc? They self tend up and down until a heavy load locks them off. so self rescue could be done? For aerial rescue going up on one line and using their climb line (remove their backup once on your system?) as the 2nd if not damaged would keep you on 2 systems? If i’m on 2 climbing systems and need to self rescue one handed just cut the 2nd (backup) or unclip if possible? Touch with a silky and it’s gone.
  24. i just did mine with ETC in Stafford (live in Willington, Derbyshire) Can’t recommend them enough. Great new centre and Martin who taught us was brilliant.
  25. They will teach you on the course, that’s why you do 5 days on the course before the test. i know the basics of bridge to bridge connection, plus a second connection onto my climbing system but nothing about a pole rescue before the course. If you know the very basics of how to climb a tree using the rope and how to use your lanyard, you will be fine to learn everything on the course.
