  1. oh yeah 2 limb walks over 5m from the trunk. 2 rescues - that are up to 3m from the trunk from memory ( you have to show safely using a second system to stop you swinging in with the casualty) i did a limb walk rescue, using a long lanyard to swing in then down. Then a pole rescue as a 3 man talking the instructor through setting up the ground belay whilst setting up the false anchor on the pole.
  2. You have to hand throw into the tree ( no throw bags) demonstrating changing over as you climb so mainline up, then lanyard into the next branch, move your mainline and so on) prob 45-50ft i guess.
  3. Yeah our instructor got us to use a prussic, 3 knot system then whatever we wanted, i could have used my ZZ even but i’d only just got it so went VT hitchclimber. The examiner asked why i body thrusted up with my ankle and knee ascender on the back of my harness rather than using them ( thought i had to show bodythrusting lol) actual wording was Ascend the tree and then perform... no stipulation on which climbing system.
  4. Just done my 38 course. You will want one cord to climb on, plus another for the aerial rescue part. It’s worth experimenting with length too, i found 70cm eye2eye using the VT knot and hitchclimber was good for me but for bodythrusting it was too short so moved to a 1m version.
  5. Have been gaining kit and doing part time weekend tree work for 18mnths or so as a side to a cycle industry sales job that i’ve now been made redundant from. Was given 2 months paid leave where i couldn’t work so gained: CS38 CS30/31 (test this Fri) Booking EFAW +f in Oct Looking to join a firm who will progress staff and someone i can learn from. Have own saws (top handle,445 and a 562) Full climbing kit and basic rigging own PPE Also have a Hilux pickup and a CS100 chipper. Not lead climber standard at all but have done a few take downs and prunes, could second to give the lead a break. full license (3points for speeding) have towed plenty but don’t have the 750kg+bit yet mechanically minded and can weld. What’s about? Happy with self employed and full/part time David
  6. I’ve been around haulage for most of my life, dad owned a firm when i was a kid and my brother and now his son are HGV drivers inc hazchem etc i’ve never known it to be ‘cool’ to regularly boast about how overloaded you are. Truck guys pride themselves on loading a truck and getting axle weights etc correct. Arb guys: i’ve got a crew cab tranny and a 2.7t trailer, of course i can get everything on at once and overload my kit... You can only kill someone once. a hitch failure, tyre blowout and you won’t stop in time even at 30 with your hazards on (well done on that btw - shouting look at me to every cop) If you run overloaded a lot it’s time for a bigger truck or take 2!
  7. I bought a CS100 after doing a handful of jobs stuffing brash into the back of the van, never again! CS100 ebay buy £2400 mint condition fresh belts n service, private owner who wasn’t using it enough so traded it in and the company put it up too cheap haha.. Pair of ramps and a £100 Rhino winch and i can load it onto my Hilux pickup on my own. One truck and leaves enough space for logs ( only doing smaller jobs as part time currently) idea is rent/buy a 3.5t trailer for bigger jobs and put the chipper in the pickup and chip/logs in the trailer. smaller jobs i’m making a simple trailer for the chipper (A frame basically that it bolts onto) very impressed with the CS100 so far, ate wet conifer well and even old dry holly.
  8. Air bag rear assist i think svtech were about £480+vat then £200ish + vat to update GVW
  9. 480+vat for air bags 380+vat for the uprate/paperwork etc mines not done yet but pricing it all. I will be building my own tipping bed etc as i can weld and have some ideas as it’s not just an arb truck it needs to remain useable as a family fun truck too. Plus i don’t see the point of a huge box that puts you 1.5t overweight when you fill it!
  10. SVtech are worth talking to about weight limits for up rating. i bought a Hilux extra cab mk6, with air assist on the back i can get gVW of 3450. gtw 6800 max most companies quote dry weight too so add 80kg of fuel and 100kg for driver and stuff then you have payload. most good ( expensive all alloy) arb bodies with tipper are 350-400kg
  11. I bought Drenaline and have just done my climbing course, tried a couple of the other ropes and def prefer Drena, knots well, runs well on hitch climber or ZZ. spliced eye is nearer. Also have HTP sterling - too thin for ZZ and a 13mm rope (can’t remember the brand ) feels harsher on the hands
  12. Same found i got headaches using pump fuel so moved to Aspen, looking at hedge trimmers at the moment and that will be battery. Once you invest in the battery and chargers the bare tools are actually very keenly priced.
  13. If you think you will progress a climbing certified helmet and harness is the basic ‘i want my own kit’ starting point. to work you need a rope, friction system ( prussic, hitchclimber, Zigzag etc ) positioning lanyard, type c full protection trouser( for aerial cutting or whatever it’s called) then there’s loads to add into the kitbag.
  14. 75 E2E and 4 wrap 3 braid VT although have just bought a ZZ but my htp sterling SRT rope is too skinny for it ( and not ce) so rope shopping next. 78kg without kit.
  15. I’m going defender route mainly because what i want doesn’t exist and the simplicity of the defender allows me to make it. 110 single cab but extended by 1ft for tool storage. custom back poss tipping, but not the huge things you see out there that will be overweight if half full. Easy to fix (i can weld and have the kit) 300tdi till i can afford something fancier to chuck in there. Depending on diesels taxation i may go petrol/lpg
  16. France is great to live in,did 3 years in the Alps working on fancy ski chalets ( not tree work) The French girls out that way are not shy! French speaking is ok to pick up but from experience they tend to look after their own.
  17. After playing with a zigzag and chicane at the weekends arb show the ZZ is now on my shopping list to try with my ropewrench, very little sit back and way less friction than a hitch climber setup. mk3/4 are both SRT approved
  18. Is it not worth hiring someone in to split it and dry this summer to sell on? Gotta be a youngster after work locally or isn’t there the profit to do this ( never sold firewood)
  19. i have done similar over the last 12mnths rec climbing. find someone you can go try it with or at the arb show. if you then feel happy to learn more buy a decent harness ( try a few on at the arb show maybe) i went tree motion lite 31” waist and 78kg so thin. buy a shorter rope for drt as when you move to SRT you will only use DRT in small trees. a handful of 3 way krabs, couple of friction cords of differing lengths suitable for the rope dia you buy. You can then find what you prefer. i settled on the VT or Distel. a pulley. i always climb with a lanyard invase which you can make from a 3-4m chunk of your main rope. a friction cord and 2 krabs going basic. All of the above will be useful going forwards. add a ankle ascender to give your arms an easier life. if feeling posh buy a new Petzl zigzag and forget the pulley and friction cord! for SRT you will want a different rope, a rope wrench and a knee ascender. start low and play about
  20. Yank pickup? F250 or even 350 series stuff, big v8 and will tow silly weights in America so down weighted to 3.5t in the uk. i have a old Ford Explorer 4x4 sat on the drive 4.0 v6 petrol, need to check its towing limits, sounds ace, full leather. air con etc paid £300 as a mot fail.
  21. i’ve got an Evoc trailbuilder, has spaces for a saw and axe. plus about 25ltrs storage space for the other bits you will want on you. used for mountain bike track building. holds a 562 with an 18” bar on it and is comfy
  22. if it’s dry it will burn... there is no bad firewood if it’s free especially!
  23. i have done welding and fabrication in the past and happened to have the right sized rod in the workshop so knocked one up in 10 mins. i enjoy making things so was worth saving the £50
  24. bought the pole and rubber, made my own head (welding kit needed to do this) easy enough and saved £50. metal is same diameter
  25. Hi, currently rec climb and help my brother on bigger jobs around my main job in sales. have all my own kit ( been climbing for 2years on DRT and 8mnths on SRT) PPE husky 562 and 540t climbing kit inc spikes, basic light rigging etc Need to get my tickets done to be able to gain more experience with other companies to get out of the stressful sales world (selling to retailers isn’t in a good place and i can’t see it improving!) So ideally somewhere i can commute to from the southern edge of Derby/Burton what’s about? Going further afield is an option but means hotels so adds to the costs which i would rather spend on the training and certs. current job gives me free fuel ( taxed) so travelling is easier. who’s good? Also can i use my 562 for the CS30/31 as it’s 60cc and auto tune? can i even put a short enough bar on it? cheers in advance!
