  1. this is always a very confusing subject ...safe distances ...I am pretty sure 11kv will not "jump " 3metres ,( under normal circumstances ) I think a spark plug takes 25kv to jump the gap , but I completely understand the need for extreme caution around electric lines , but if they are grossly overstated then they will be ignored to some extent by some people . Look at a pylon for example 400kv yet the metal superstucture of the pylon is only about 3metres from the conductors , Watch a lorry on a road go under 11kv lines with only a couple of metres clearance , I have worked on line clearance in the past and never really liked being near the conductors ...live, or made dead , and it can be very hard to judge distances esp when in tree adjacent to conductors ... not sure 10 metres safe distance is possible as 11 kv wires are only about 6-7 metres above ground level , so grass cutting is breaking the rules !!!
  2. You may also want to consider what to do with plastic pallets at the end of their life ..wood can be burnt !! wooden ones last a fair while if up off ground as others have suggested .
  3. It would appear to be RSK Group ...
  4. The demarcation area has been updated / expanded in Devon as of 10 th Dec I am now within this area ☹️https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1038293/DemarcatedArea4_011221.pdf
  5. very sad to hear that ...it was covid according to local news 😔
  6. Thanks for the explanation , I was somewhat puzzled why anybody specifically wanted Lawsons !
  7. I will put it another way then ....Lawsons Cypress has less uses than almost any other wood ...sorry if I offended your favourite tree 😁
  8. What do you want Lawsons for ? I always thought it was of the most useless woods ever invented ...
  9. There is loads of wood out there that is well worth milling , and quite a few people doing it ..but the stumbling block is actually selling it ...at a fair price as well ...and not just the best plank from each tree , I know of contractors yards with lovely butts and planks just rotting away !! shame , but some seem to be of the mindset that if it does not fetch a high enough price to part with then it is left to rot !!
  10. Oh dear !! I am not sure exactly what the effects are on the DF's in Oregon other than some needle loss on mature trees , it does not seem to be completely killing all trees affected ...yet , but time will tell and it may be different in the UK ..I have about 3 acres of mature 30m plus DF's which I do not wish to lose ! I have been felling some Ash in my woods today due to die- back at this rate I will have a field not a woods !!!!☹️
  11. I have always found strawberry wood very prone to crack and warp and it loses its colour quite quickly as well .....nice work though " guppy "punk you are a Dab hand at this
  12. The exclusion zone with regards to movement of timber etc has now been expanded almost right up to my doorstep near Ashburton !!https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1033190/Demarcated_Area_Nov2021.pdf
  13. that IS Christmas ..same shit every year !!😁
  14. Some with threaded bar and nuts others with screws , all fixings are recessed and hidden by wooden dowels , I hate seeing screwheads !!
  15. sorry ....I assumed there were loads left !
  16. Does anyone even know what COP stands for ?? ( conference of parties to save you looking !!)...many ideas floating on here , and elsewhere no doubt ...but little things will be of no use I think , perhaps we will have to give up things like flying unless for important reasons , minimal holidays ,no golf trips to the Algarve , Skiing ,Stag nights in Amsterdam , watching cricket ,rugby F1 etc in far flung places , Disney world ....perhaps we should ban any new larger than needed cars .. sorts cars ,4x4 unless business , VW vans for leisure use , no big tv's , no new larger than needed houses or other status symbol type excesses , I have always had motorbikes should I give them up? I ride mostly for fun , therefore just wasting fuel , but what would happen to the economy ...motorcycle dealers close down , no mechanics etc ? same for Pilots of planes and the Aviation industry ? Who will make such self sacrifices for the greater good ?? or will there be a clumsy set of rules imposed upon us ? No one will like it ,and will the rich / celebrities give up all their excesses as good role models ...then what will we do with our money , what incentive will there be to get out of bed in the morning ? I think everyone realises something needs to be done , but who does what , and to what extent ?
  17. It is a great shame if the worst happens , but I suspect the staff will end up still doing line clearance in a different T shirt ( another company ) or else Electricity company will be without tree cutting gangs and it would take ages to build that back from scratch with a new company / or expanding other ones !! so many tickets required !!
  18. I recently finished this garden bench , had the idea in my head for a while just a matter of selecting / finding suitable pieces , made from what I know as bone Oak from Stagheaded trees or just dead limbs in the interior of the crown , lots of character , very strong and decay resistant ...I may oil it next spring or leave as is ..lightly bleached ... posing in front of my Parthenocisus tricuspidata !!
  19. it is just the way employment law is nowadays ...government changed the criteria by which such things are quantified to help reduce tax/ NI losses to the treasury and to help protect employees rights .
  20. good grief that is expensive !! circa £10 per acre is the usual going rate , but woodland rarely comes up for sale ...probably snapped up by cornishman who just sold a cottage for half a million ( to a non local buyer of course )
  21. Anybody tried their chainsaw trousers ? any good ? and how does their sizing seem compared to other trousers you own ( I don't really like buying on line ) or any one had other gear from them and found it good / bad ?
  22. not sure how you could in the eyes of employment law consider this position "self employed " !!
  23. try washing resin off your hands and kit with just a bit of water !!!!!
  24. Phytophthora pluvialis - GOV.UK WWW.GOV.UK Information about Phytophthora pluvialis, including how to report sightings.
  25. elbow height is considered the best position ...Graduates are a bit lower as they were designed ( partly ) to use in schools ...great lathes though and should last for ever !!
