  1. I do not think there is much Elm in the southwest , unless you include the small dia sucker re-growth which is nearly all sapwood and dies from DED before it gets to any size , there are a few on the coast in some places ...and the odd Wych Elm ..
  2. good job I had my glasses on as I thought that looks a bit pale for Elm !!!😂
  3. I remember seeing that , it was very tricky / skilled work ....that is why I bought a plastic one !!😁 are you a fisherman ??
  4. This murder happened only a few months ago local..ish to me ..but no national outrage ...murderer was immigrant ...https://www.devonlive.com/news/devon-news/lorraine-cox-murder-suspect-contacted-5152864
  5. I like rust !! a few examples ..... the weakest link , and an old window shutter ...
  6. is it realistic / practical /possible to get wood to below 20% just by being in a shed or undercover outdoors ???
  7. If you are thinking of towing a large chipper then i would think you will need C+E ( class 1 )
  8. I have turned Griselinia and it was very nice indeed ( see pic ..15" dia bowl \ platter ) has a strange smell and warps a fair bit whilst drying and the nice rich pink colour fades to brown in time ...
  9. Individual rings of MP can be desirable / valuable to woodturners if they include the knots ... I have seen a supplier asking £50 a ring which is excessive !! I turn it when green / moist not dry ( hard work and dusty ) can produce good results ...see pic ( approx 15" dia )
  10. Mitsi L200 's with super select gearbox ( newish models ) are OK to drive on roads in 4 wheel drive , but not diff lock / low ....
  11. It is so obvious you are not an Arb !!😂
  12. I dive for razor clams and it looks nothing like one !!😁....pic of a typical catch !!
  13. Go to L200 facebook group ....silicone mastic is most common solution 👍
  14. A mate of mine has had a Morbark chipper for over 20 years ( drum chipper ) and it is a fantastic bit of kit !! The chips go in to a void / pocket behind the blade and then fly out under centrifugal force ..no blower needed . Very much less stress on machine as cutting with grain , and the drum is supported at each end by a good bearing which is far better than in the centre of a disc , the Morbark is a really well made machine the "tin work" is about 5 mm thick and all bearings are heavy duty and greasable !!
  15. does the 2m3 have to be in one load ??
  16. Arboriculturist ...are you in Devon ? if so perhaps go to Yandles in Somerset and look at their wood store and prices to see what sells and for how much ...a very wide range available and very few BIG slabs , not sure many want or need them . I know plenty of contractors around my way that over the years have had some lovely bits of timber that they covet and are sure will fetch a handsome price , and I see it a few years later all cracked / rotten and cut up for firewood !! ( bit like the classic "highly valuable" walnut sketch )
  17. If the tables / benches are for outdoor use then you can only really use the heartwood ( durable ) but for indoors the sapwood can remain and give a nice contrast and save on wastage , or even go natural edged including bark if desired !!
  18. Check out what this chap makes with Euc !! warping desirable ..... melvyn+firmager - Google Search WWW.GOOGLE.CO.UK
  19. what happened with the felling ...90 degrees to hinge ?? 😱😁
  20. Western red cedar ...shade tolerant , which will probably be needed as the other trees are already established and deer do not browse them .
  21. In the Arb world if you ask half a dozen different people to inspect a tree and quote for recommended work then you will see a massive variation of opinion and price !!! mechanics are quite similar , but not as bad ....😁
  22. There is a continuing rise in articles in newspapers etc about how polluting and harmful to health woodburners are and can not really see a long time future for growing log sales !! My own logs in my store are probably not less than 20% ,,,but ....I keep at least a days supply indoors by the woodburner to ensure nice dry logs ...
