  1. There is a continuing rise in articles in newspapers etc about how polluting and harmful to health woodburners are and can not really see a long time future for growing log sales !! My own logs in my store are probably not less than 20% ,,,but ....I keep at least a days supply indoors by the woodburner to ensure nice dry logs ...
  2. Fantastic story !!!! and thanks for bothering to write it all up 👍 I use a kayak a lot and although I love the look of some wooden ones they are just too pretty / fragile for use ....plastic is fantastic !!
  3. It will probably have developed reaction wood in response to the lean and will be far more likely to warp / split ..the tree is talking to you 😉 an old timber merchant I knew always used to say if the middle is not in the middle then it is no good !!
  4. I think recent legislation means the agency is in effect your "employer " and as such must pay holiday pay and deal with tax and NI ...it definitely is in the truck business (HGV )
  5. Pretty much sums up woodturning !! but does anyone consider it a serious profession ? Some of those that teach etc are just good self publicists rather than turners ,and it baffles me how they will take a fee for demonstrating / writing about their work and promote / sell tools for doing it ...then bleat when some one copies their work !!
  6. perhaps you are a bit like me and just enjoy seeing them so upset ,by nearly everything 😂
  7. It rattles the lefties !!😁
  8. I do not think any country has very much spare capacity in it's health service , why would it ? surely it is tailored to need , no point in having lots of empty beds and staff with nothing to do ..I am surprised that there has been no mention of Belgium ( home of the EU in Brussels ) has the worst infection rate in the WORLD !!
  9. not sure where you live , but there are 52 weeks in a year x 5 = 260 !!
  10. It can't be that easy trying to pull one out from the bottom of the pile ...seems like a solution to a problem that does not exist !!
  11. There are many great makers out there , but marketing is a difficult and often expensive exercise !! I sell stuff through galleries who typically take 50% ,,, many people say that is ridiculous etc .but ,,, galleries achieve far better prices than other outlets , I have done some craft events ( fairly posh ones ) but entry to such events is not cheap , plus costs of travel , insurance , accommodation, meals etc PLUS being non productive for the duration , packing / unpacking before and after event and prices achieved are normally below gallery prices so not any more profitable ...add in to that a spell of shit weather and it could be a disaster !! I know many great makers / artists that barely scrape a living and most of there income is (was !!) from demos / teaching etc ...
  12. Have you a lot to do in there ? removing softwoods I presume ... I would imagine the NT and WT would be a bit "fussy " to work for ....Is there public access at those woods now ?
  13. where in Devon is your woods ? I have a few acres near Ashburton ......
  14. If they were BLACK thorn it would then be considered racially motivated and the police are sure to take it very seriously !!!
  15. I have the 3M versaflo and it is the best available and the most expensive !!! I also have the Trend one but the motor and battery are in the helmet which makes it quite heavy and prone to falling off if you lean forward unless you have the headband quite tight which is uncomfortable after a while ( The 3M has motor and battery on waist belt and superior filtration )
  16. The fantastic colours seen in many fresh cut woods will not last !! sadly .... I do a lot of turning and have seen this my self a great deal , one reason I do not bother with ( or pay a premium for ) Yew ... the vivid red / orange heartwood that contrasts with the white sap wood soon fades ...spalted woods are my favourite as they stay true .
  17. I doubt it will recover lost colour ...in fact the complete opposite it is a bleach !!!
  18. water , detergent and a brush !!
  19. The Axminster chucks are excellent ( and locally made I believe ) I have had one for 20+ years and it has coped with lumps of up to 25 KG regularly , i think you get a "back plate" with the chuck suited to most threads which is interchangable .....the chuck will always sell secondhand if you give up !!
  20. After a further bit of research it would appear to be the tenants responsibility unless "specifically excluded" http://www.ala.org.uk/sites/default/files/0802.pdf I suspect this will be an important thing to know as dead ash trees become more common .....
  21. An aquaintance of mine owns a field and has a rather frosty relationship with tenant , the council recently served a notice about trees with Ash Die Back , who is responsible ( pays !! ) ...owner or tenant ??
  22. I made my own from chicken wire , a bit time consuming but should be usable many many times !! however I am pretty sure everyone will think it works out too dear so will stick with plastic ( cheapest ) so the ( plastic ) problem will continue !!
  23. These guys will have all you need .... Westward Rope and Wire - Home Page WWW.WESTWARDROPEANDWIRE.CO.UK Established for over 25 years Westward Rope and Wire supply quality rope, both natural and manmade, wire rope and...
  24. SUP - Is that Stand Up Paddle Boarding? I've never really seen the point of that. Non of the excitement of surfing or windsurfing. Yep ..stand up paddleboarding .....very popular this year ( after lockdown ) most suppliers sold out ..same with quite a bit of other stuff as well , kayaks , wetsuits etc
  25. I spend a lot of time on the water and very rarely see a windsurfer ...mostly SUP,s and kayaks ...
