  3. I recently acquired about a TON of ASH BURR ...it is now on my land and the nearest town is ...ASHBURTON !!! this will be cut in to blocks for woodturning and should result in some fabulous creations with all that figure and a bit of spalting as well !!

  4. That's a lot of bowls !!...Greenwood working , esp spooncarving seems to be a bit of a cult thing nowadays , we are in the perfect job for getting nice wood ..πŸ‘

  6. 2 stroke engines are much more powerful for the same cc as 4 stroke , they fire every 2 strokes ,have less moving parts , they are often considered higher revving as you hear more combustion strokes , many modern 4 stroke motorcycle engines rev higher . 15-16000 is not uncommon , there are now very few 2 stroke engines due to emissions ....
  7. Stack them a bit like building a dry stone wall against a fence / wall , cover just the top ...even in the garage , only one log deep and they will dry fine ...move indoors late summer for best results ..
  8. Businesses have had to increase prices to cover increased business costs ...this does not mean that income of the business owner ( net ) has increased , often they have been reduced ...

  11. One problem is that many staff are well paid ,with good pensions so retire early creating a staff shortage !!

I am almost certain that it is not Laburnum , however I can not be sure what it is , Cercis is a good possibility as is Cotinus , but not Laburnum ...I turn quite a lot of Laburnum ( today in fact !!) but the wood and bark not right ....did you not identify the tree before cutting it down ?? As for value , everyone thinks it is worth a fortune except anyone wanting to buy it πŸ˜‚After further thought the wood looks like Mulberry , the twig pictures are not very helpful though ...
  14. As far as Cypress goes I have known plenty of Monterey cypress sold to a local boat builders some years ago , sadly boatyard now posh flats ...Monterey is very decay resistant and strong ...
  15. Has any one ever seen natural regen of Leylandii?? I thought they were all propagated from cuttings and that is why seedlings are about 2x the price of most conifers

  17. Try and use as much quarter sawn wood as you can it warps a lot less ....
  18. I went to Merrist Wood at 24 for a one year course from 85-86 , did a bit before then , but there was not really much of an Arb industry then !! by today's standards anyway.. still do a bit , climb most weeks still and have my own woods to play in πŸ™‚

I remember working with a couple of lads years ago , and when we got in to the truck for lunch before long one guy says can you smell dog poo ? no we say !...bit of silence then again he says ,are you sure ? so we check our boots etc and again reply no...I am sure I can smell it he says !! getting a bit agitated ...then we realised that he could smell it because when he coiled his rope he must of got some on his hand and then wiped his nose with his hand and had poo on his top lip !!! he was not as amused as us !! as he ran to the river to wash it off πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚
  20. yep , most motorbikes ( but not all ) have them in the rear wheel , reduces snatch in the system , particularly chain / sprockets ...

  22. must be special petrol in Devon !! I have the same non problem , but then it hardly ever rains here and the atmosphere is so dry I suspect our fuel does not absorb water !!πŸ˜‚

  24. Mr Stihl and Mrs Husqvarna designed their saws to run on petrolwell over 50 years ago at least , they are for a Worldwide market . I have being using saws for about 40 years now and never had a problem attributed to the fuel !!!! the change from leaded to unleaded caused some issues but that was ages ago . I often leave stuff , strimmer esp for months and have no issues when starting it up come spring , same with motorbikes ....boat engines etc ...
