  1. I have known guys who worked really hard and were making very good money on piece work , the customer ( big forestry company ) thought these guys are earning too much so reduced the rate !!! other guys who did not beast themselves every day could not make a living then !! shot themselves in the foot , this scenario happens quite a bit in other industries as well ....
  2. claiming mileage @ 45p per mile ( I think ) is one way ...
  3. The more white patches / areas in spalting look great but....they can be too soft to get a good finish on so it is a difficult balance but that board above looks great so I would not risk spoiling it ...I spalt quite a lot myself for turning and I am saddened if it has gone too far , looks fine with some areas being natural beech coloured ...
  4. The state of the leaves is not something to be concerned about at this time of the year , ...however ...the top of the stem / trunk looks more worrying , was the tree decapitated a while back ??
  5. I found this washed up on a beach recently , about 2" long, it is definitely wood , also not quite sure how it was formed , it is obviously a branch bark collar but how it become detached and had 2 sides is puzzling to me , I think it is Sycamore but my mate thinks it is Pussy Willow 😂
  6. green ...as in not fully dry ...though it was pretty wet inside still
  7. The tree was dead standing for over a year , and yes the staining will be a sort of spalting / blue staining as is common in white conifer wood once dead / felled ...
  8. I immediately thought as soon as I saw the name " hedge mong " that it might be interesting ( in an entertaining way !!😂) brings some light fun to the forum !!
  9. A while back I obtained some lumps of Monkey puzzle , the pics show the chainsawed block before mounting on the lathe and then the completed hollow vessel ( approx 10" x 10" ) it sands and polishes well !! these pics are about 2 weeks apart to allow drying as wood was green when started ....
  10. what are you going to display on them ? if it is wooden items then wood does not show best on wood ...look in galleries , mostly white boxes ,shelves etc ...if you want a smooth-ish ,textured finish a bit like sandblasting then wire brushing can achieve that , best use a drill as Angle grinder a bit too fast and you may get burns , you could also try bleaching , is a "finish " needed ?? Also you can remove the hairy fine splinters by careful use of a blowtorch , just enough to singe off the small splinters without scorching the wood itself ..
  11. If you have it indoors at least a day before you burn it , and fairly close to the fire then it will take the moisture content down quite a bit ...
  12. is he truly fearless or just have very poor eyesight ??
  13. Most likely drought related , either purely lack of water , or conditions favour a disease of some sort , what type of soils in this area ??? Is this on mature trees only or all age trees ???
  14. Read up about the problems alcohol causes to keep it in perspective !!
  15. always good to have cash in the bank !!
  16. roughly speaking about 1/3 of houses are owned ( mortgage free ) 1/3 are rented and 1/3 have a mortgage , many with a percentage paid off ( plenty of equity ) so in reality it does not affect as many people as it would first appear ...no consolation for those that it does though !!!
  17. my thoughts exactly ...how about crowdfunding ?😉
  18. Not sure if it is "remarkable " but a very interesting specimen .....Scots Pine on a railway bank ...
  19. This time of the year is usually less busy , i usually make the most of the fine weather and go to the beach , ride motorbike , walk coast path etc ....or catch up on DIY , and cut and split logs and put in shed etc etc ... not really a fan of being busy all the time !! I appreciate I am in a fortunate position to do this but there is more to life than work , it is easy and common for people to become slaves to the machine rather than the machine being your slave ...
  20. A woodworking show I used to go to every year suffered so much theft that it is no longer run ☹️ happens all the time but it is viewed as a " victimless crime " unlike name calling !!!!
  21. You could add some fertiliser to the mulch if you wish ...
  22. They suffer badly from rust on chassis ..so give that a good check and get treated as first priority !! I used 5 cans on motorcycle chain lube to do mine a couple of years ago , before any rust appeared , I think all such trucks are much the same on running costs / reliability etc but Hi lux is generally considered the best ...but ...are very expensive to purchase in comparison ...usual checks apply , has it had a hard life ? , mileage , service history etc ....
  23. I have done a few like that , no brash removal etc ....if both sides are happy no problems !!
