You have obviously overlooked the fact that LAND , houses farms etc does not need to be purchased to build a tunnel !!!!
  2. As I get older I am less worried about dying than I used to be ....I have no fear of dying I just do not want to die yet ...my biggest fear is living too long , but not really sure how long is too long !! some one once told me that retiring is a bit like going on holiday but you do not know how long for !!! so difficult to budget and pace yourself !!!
  3. I have washed a clump of Himalayan Birch to bring out their whiteness in front of a recently trimmed Leylandii hedge ....looked great ...climbed them with a bucket of soapy water !!
  4. I have spent time in South Africa and the murder rate is very high , so I doubt they keep all the murderers in jail for life ...knowing the mentality of life there they get let out to murder would be murderers to keep the jail population down !!!
  5. we have "won" when we have no more customers because we told them that they are stupid , but we kid ourselves that we are now part time / retired 😁
  6. just been on the news ... we have the wettest 6 months ( july --december ) on record !! it has been bloody horrible ...
  7. I'm 62 and have pissed off plenty of people and the policy works well 👍
  8. classic "facebook" twattery !!! never really worth commenting / posting ...
  9. read this first as I know someone who got seriously caught out by this !!!! do+i+need+planning+permission+to+tarmac+over+grass - Recherche Google WWW.GOOGLE.CO.UK
  10. I have an unlined chimney and the entire chimney breast is effectively a giant heat sink acting a bit like a night storage heater , one good reason not to line a chimney if it is not essential ....
  11. Selling stuff is far more difficult than making it !! marketing is a very difficult thing to master , even the biggest brands in the world still have an expensive marketing dept , some people seem to sell craft stuff online quite successfully it would seem , but I know far more who have spent a LOT of time and MONEY to promote their stuff , from what I gather ETSY fees work out about 25% on smaller sales and you do the work ....I have no idea how stuff is sold on Instagram , I think those who have gathered a lot of followers over time , and post a lot , direct them to their own website ...
  12. It has been incredibly wet in Devon over the last few weeks / months , I notice my own supply of wood kept out of rain in a draughty log store still seems wet from the atmosphere / humidity ...keeping a few next to the fire sorts it out , but still wetter than I can remember !!!
  13. I have known guys who worked really hard and were making very good money on piece work , the customer ( big forestry company ) thought these guys are earning too much so reduced the rate !!! other guys who did not beast themselves every day could not make a living then !! shot themselves in the foot , this scenario happens quite a bit in other industries as well ....
  14. claiming mileage @ 45p per mile ( I think ) is one way ...
  15. The more white patches / areas in spalting look great but....they can be too soft to get a good finish on so it is a difficult balance but that board above looks great so I would not risk spoiling it ...I spalt quite a lot myself for turning and I am saddened if it has gone too far , looks fine with some areas being natural beech coloured ...
  16. The state of the leaves is not something to be concerned about at this time of the year , ...however ...the top of the stem / trunk looks more worrying , was the tree decapitated a while back ??
  17. I found this washed up on a beach recently , about 2" long, it is definitely wood , also not quite sure how it was formed , it is obviously a branch bark collar but how it become detached and had 2 sides is puzzling to me , I think it is Sycamore but my mate thinks it is Pussy Willow 😂
  18. green ...as in not fully dry ...though it was pretty wet inside still
  19. The tree was dead standing for over a year , and yes the staining will be a sort of spalting / blue staining as is common in white conifer wood once dead / felled ...
  20. I immediately thought as soon as I saw the name " hedge mong " that it might be interesting ( in an entertaining way !!😂) brings some light fun to the forum !!
  21. A while back I obtained some lumps of Monkey puzzle , the pics show the chainsawed block before mounting on the lathe and then the completed hollow vessel ( approx 10" x 10" ) it sands and polishes well !! these pics are about 2 weeks apart to allow drying as wood was green when started ....
  22. what are you going to display on them ? if it is wooden items then wood does not show best on wood ...look in galleries , mostly white boxes ,shelves etc ...if you want a smooth-ish ,textured finish a bit like sandblasting then wire brushing can achieve that , best use a drill as Angle grinder a bit too fast and you may get burns , you could also try bleaching , is a "finish " needed ?? Also you can remove the hairy fine splinters by careful use of a blowtorch , just enough to singe off the small splinters without scorching the wood itself ..
  23. If you have it indoors at least a day before you burn it , and fairly close to the fire then it will take the moisture content down quite a bit ...
  24. is he truly fearless or just have very poor eyesight ??
  25. Most likely drought related , either purely lack of water , or conditions favour a disease of some sort , what type of soils in this area ??? Is this on mature trees only or all age trees ???
