  1. Stack them a bit like building a dry stone wall against a fence / wall , cover just the top ...even in the garage , only one log deep and they will dry fine ...move indoors late summer for best results ..
  2. Businesses have had to increase prices to cover increased business costs ...this does not mean that income of the business owner ( net ) has increased , often they have been reduced ...
  3. I bet your employer contributed quite a lot to your pension pot as well ...
  4. The ones on £20k would receive a 50% pay rise !!!!!! no way will that happen ....
  5. One problem is that many staff are well paid ,with good pensions so retire early creating a staff shortage !!
  6. I think "SPON" by Barn the Spoon is considered to be highly rated ( I have not spelt spoon wrong !!!!)
  7. I am almost certain that it is not Laburnum , however I can not be sure what it is , Cercis is a good possibility as is Cotinus , but not Laburnum ...I turn quite a lot of Laburnum ( today in fact !!) but the wood and bark not right ....did you not identify the tree before cutting it down ?? As for value , everyone thinks it is worth a fortune except anyone wanting to buy it 😂After further thought the wood looks like Mulberry , the twig pictures are not very helpful though ...
  8. As far as Cypress goes I have known plenty of Monterey cypress sold to a local boat builders some years ago , sadly boatyard now posh flats ...Monterey is very decay resistant and strong ...
  9. Has any one ever seen natural regen of Leylandii?? I thought they were all propagated from cuttings and that is why seedlings are about 2x the price of most conifers
  10. Facebook WWW.FACEBOOK.COM not sure what happened here but picture comes up if you click on link ...
  11. Try and use as much quarter sawn wood as you can it warps a lot less ....
  12. I went to Merrist Wood at 24 for a one year course from 85-86 , did a bit before then , but there was not really much of an Arb industry then !! by today's standards anyway.. still do a bit , climb most weeks still and have my own woods to play in 🙂
  13. I remember working with a couple of lads years ago , and when we got in to the truck for lunch before long one guy says can you smell dog poo ? no we say !...bit of silence then again he says ,are you sure ? so we check our boots etc and again reply no...I am sure I can smell it he says !! getting a bit agitated ...then we realised that he could smell it because when he coiled his rope he must of got some on his hand and then wiped his nose with his hand and had poo on his top lip !!! he was not as amused as us !! as he ran to the river to wash it off 😂😂
  14. yep , most motorbikes ( but not all ) have them in the rear wheel , reduces snatch in the system , particularly chain / sprockets ...
  15. Curious as to if any one on here knows of her and has seen her work , or have you supplied wood , she seems to use some huge lumps so a possible source if you have some ....fantastic work Alison Crowther WWW.ALISONCROWTHER.COM Contemporary sculptor and furniture maker working exclusively in English oak sourced sustainably from UK woodlands.
  16. must be special petrol in Devon !! I have the same non problem , but then it hardly ever rains here and the atmosphere is so dry I suspect our fuel does not absorb water !!😂
  17. Khan will only consider it is serious if a white person has stabbed a person of colour !!!
  18. Mr Stihl and Mrs Husqvarna designed their saws to run on petrolwell over 50 years ago at least , they are for a Worldwide market . I have being using saws for about 40 years now and never had a problem attributed to the fuel !!!! the change from leaded to unleaded caused some issues but that was ages ago . I often leave stuff , strimmer esp for months and have no issues when starting it up come spring , same with motorbikes ....boat engines etc ...
  19. The main problem with the NHS is not being able to get people out and in to care homes , due to a lack of cheap labour to work in care homes , they are still £1k+ per week !!
  20. If you are limited on start up funds then perhaps a long handled hedgetrimmer ...loads of work around for them , no great skill / qualification needed ...
  21. On the original topic ....many people 55 plus can get early retirement , primarily those in the public sector and large corporations ( banks etc ) A great deal will have the mortgage paid off by 55 so this a huge reduction in outgoings !! Myself and my beloved are in this situation ( mortgage / rent free ) She is ex NHS , I still work, but not full time , have an abundance of wood so heating costs are minimal , compared to many !! If we both worked full time on average salaries £25 k then we would have after tax etc £7-800 per week income , what would we do with it all ??? Holidays maybe , but limited due to full time work , fancy car ? if I got a fancy boat or motorbike , I could afford them but not have much time to use them so what is the point !? nicer house perhaps , but we are happy where we are so would rather exchange money for " time " with a realisation we are in the autumn of our years . Inheritance plays a part also . After getting up to go to work for 40 plus years we feel that is enough. Also if you research demographics then there are more people in the 50 -60 age bracket than any other ( baby boomers ) so there are just not enough of the next generation to fill the jobs that are being left ( also some die or become incapacitated ) so the reasons are many for the shortage of workers .........
  22. Cherry picker would be a good investment , sub out to others and do other types of jobs with it as well .
