  1. Always easy to think what you might do in future but like me I guess- you don't expect it and it's easier not to be too security conscious. I just try and hide as best poss or it's in the cab. FR jones will do you a good deal and fast service:thumbup1:
  2. £101.00
  3. dead knotweed canes make great kindling
  4. Whats the other tree behind the birch- would it be best to persuade the neighbours to fell the birch and let the smaller one take over I would think they were both planted at the same time so the neighbour didn't have to look at the side of the house. Check the soil isn't shrinkable clay. though the birch was planted after the houses were built so am I right in saying removal wouldn't cause a problem. My view is that the birch is bullying the house and it's time for it to go. People shouldn't plant right up against their boundary- it's only going to cause friction.
  5. we use 150 tw and find it pretty good with 600 hours Some issues but no major problems at all other than when we didn't grease properly.
  6. Dunno but whatever they did in Denmark had no effect so.................
  7. Because in Uk we have jobsworths who look to justify their jobs by being unnecessarily picky I reckon.
  8. it's possible this is the tip of the iceberg and making safe may be our only option. I expect a very different landscape in 30 years. Could be that injecting ash will only delay the inevitable.
  9. This was so obvious I expect deep down quite a few will be glad this disease has arrived. Stimulates an industry. Sorry but honest!!
  10. There has to come a point sometime soonish I guess where the disease has spread widely and controlling ash wood movement will be pretty pointless.
  11. I would expect the subbie to offer to pay especially if he/she was rushing etc. I may decide not to accept payment depending on the profitability from the job or the circumstances.
  12. After about 6 very mild winters not using salt much the last 2 have been bad with many requests for salt. Delivered the first 2 bags about 4 weeks ago. Better get more stocks in.
  13. Very interesting- if you're a bit geeky= like me Important to note that high efficiencies often mean less waste heat going up the chimney meaning the flue is colder which could contribute to condensing gasses. Sometimes overridden by using an electric fan. This obviously affects the energy input and ultimate efficiency. Difference in gross and net efficiency- net being about 10% less than gross. 1kg of wood= 5kw at 100% efficiency I'm very happy with a 72%nett efficiency stove giving about 4kw of heat per kg of wood. I guess that would cost about 50 pence in electricity(not really sure what electric costs). Chopping logs has even more reason.
  14. would a compromise be to remove two of them
  15. A 3 day course to assess your competence for a regular user of chainsaws seems a bit unnecessary. I can tell quite quickly whether someone can be trusted with a chainsaw. I like to hear the chainbreak working regularly. See attitude to PPE. See how sharp they keep the saw. Foot positioning when cutting on the ground. Accuracy of felling and seeing that they haven't fallen into 'lazy' ways. Pretty much sums it up. Surely that could be done in a day for a small group. Say £100 each. My tickets were gained in about 1990. Should I be re assessed?
  16. Plenty of houses on some estates where we work that don't take them down:001_smile:
  17. Needs must- I loved it:001_tt2: At 17 any car is cool
  18. I'm sure you can close an A road with stop /go boards. I'll have to check. We've done a few but not fast roads.
  19. must have done that at least:thumbup1: I was driving a morris minor in 1978 that did 65mph:thumbup:
  20. presumably the idea was that a 20 tonne load at 20% would weigh 16tonnes at 1% so you could carry 25% more wood per load and that is a profit so long as drying by heating doesn't swallow it all up which I reckon it would.
  21. Taming the wood programme had a couple of guys getting wood down to 1 or 2%. Heating for 8 hrs to achieve this. Led to a light hotter burning product which they think will be a future fuel. I wonder how long it can stay at 1% moisture. probably need to store it shrink wrapped
  22. big agree:thumbup:
  23. Interesting you tube video Tony. Stated that no sexual stage found in UK. So all these trees were imported or infected from windblown spores. If this is the case then next year I guess will likely see a massive increase in cases found.
  24. always plus and this is a warning when you get your tyres replaced on wheels a lot of tyre companies advise checking your nuts (ha ha) after 50 miles. I never did this but we've had 2 cases in the last 10 years of wheels coming loose- they didn't fall off but they knackered the wheels. These cases were after having work done on the wheels. So I advise- check your nuts!! Older mechanics say you don't need a torque wrench - just a good spanner and a good mechanic- we may have good spanners but who amongst us is really that good a mechanic.
  25. You see- Andy has hit nail on head. Given a cheaper product and easier supply chain I suspect everyone on here would use Aspen. At the moment the cost and difficulty of obtaining supplies/ storing supplies make it a non starter. I would need about 5 cans a week just for 2 stroke. My nearest supplier is 15 miles away. It costs £16 for 5 litres. Storage of a pallet load just gives me a massive risk assessment headache. Disposal of the cans again becomes an issue as we have no plastic recycling. Aspen should get one of the multinationals on board- say BP- then this would roll
