1. Cheers.
2. You need to write a book on it! No seriously though you do. I would hazard at a guess and be safe with a little wager that no one else on here can walk away with 3K profit each week from just a 3 man gang. You need to publish that little book of tricks!
3. Wow! To run a tree business with such small overheads is impressive! I am definitely going wrong somewhere.
4. So thats what Buzzsaw gets up to in his retirement! For those who dont know he was in the running man.
5. I suppose it makes good business sense to follow up calls but there are 2 problems with that. 1. To me it is just hassling people, if the shoe was on the other foot I would be saying "If I wanted you to do the job I would have called you" 2. Its more work and Im just too lazy for that. Although I think I will try it on the next decent sized job I price just to see what happens.
6. Would I be way off the mark if I thought that sounded like a £1/2 million squid job!
7. Sounds good. Got a part number?
8. Has anyone tried those mesh goggles/glasses you can get? The mesh looks alot finer.
9. I assumed you didnt and hope you dont think otherwise. Its just a pet hate of mine, some see it as "just business" etc.
10. Cant see anything wrong in what you did. I would hope for the other guys sake that the customer hadnt given him the go ahead then called you by mistake, still not your problem though. I had a couple of jobs were when Ive got there and its already been done after agreeing my price and time to carry out the work.(only happened twice though IIRC on smallish jobs) 100% the customers fault, I couldnt even think about blaming the other contractor, unless, he started getting into the customer, finding out my price then undercutting, etc etc which IMO is very, very low.
11. Tbh the filters on all my Stihl saws allow fine dust through. Ive seen the ads on how good the huskies are when you try to smother them in sawdust but are they just as bad with fine dust like the stihls?
12. No they had a pump that ran off the throttle butterfly shaft that pumped in fuel when you hit the throttle. They wore out but also wore out the carb body too letting in air.
13. Hope you can get some help. I have attempted to rescue around 3 cats now. Do you know what happens as soon as you get near them? They jump down out of the tree! Well thats what happened to me. So all ended well for the cat.
14. The new chain is definitely more aggressive. If the new 020 is slow to throttle response then that is a very very poor. I assume the chain has been tensioned by hand and is free to move/pull. I guess they have had to lean the saw out to make way for the new emissions that it doesnt have any low end power. I hope not and its just a bedding in teething problem!
15. I think we need more pics before making a decision!
16. Just out of interest is all the above info for the vehicle in question or just diesels in general?
17. OH no!! I cant have them on my ignore list now!! Do you think Steve paid for that shiny new axe himself.
18. Does it still have a spur sprocket or have they upgraded it to a rim setup yet
19. The pension is declining which is the point of my post. They will look for better options, who wouldnt! You can get a better pension just put more income into to it. Just out of interest do you know to get a good pension we should put 1/3 of our wages into a pension! Not from what I hear ie family who work in the NHS, education and civil service. Pay is always better in the private sector its just you have to chase it more and take higher risks. Just look at LA climbers wages compared to that of free lance or employed private staff. I would be annoyed if I was them. I still think me and Bolam should start a picket line for arbs though.
20. I know with some of the more modern ford cars changing the fuel filter can be a right PITA. You have to tow them around the block to get them going! Technology eh!!!
21. I dont know if its been mentioned but the reason a lot of people work in the public sector is because of job security and good pensions. Take that away and you will find the better skilled people will move into the private sector where they can achieve higher pay and bonus etc. If what we want is lower skilled workers educating our children and looking after our health then this government is just the ticket.
22. Could possibly be the gearbox is goosed. Also could be side casing that contains a bearing and also the crankcase that contains another if its never been greased. Could cost alot of money to repair or could be what rangermatt says in which case an easy cheap fix.
23. ..........yes of course I can cut it down, I'm a professional tree surgeon and that's how I earn a living. I would then probably say can we possibly remove something else rather than the ancient oak. But, since this is the career we choose IMO it's not worth getting upset about felling trees.
24. Well it's cheaper than my car insurance that's for sure. I'll have to check but iirc for me it's aound £600-700. In the grand scheme of things it's nothing, especially compared to what it could cost without it.
25. Reading through all of this I think the best I can hope for is that I drop dead before retirement!
