  1. The pension is declining which is the point of my post. They will look for better options, who wouldnt! You can get a better pension just put more income into to it. Just out of interest do you know to get a good pension we should put 1/3 of our wages into a pension! Not from what I hear ie family who work in the NHS, education and civil service. Pay is always better in the private sector its just you have to chase it more and take higher risks. Just look at LA climbers wages compared to that of free lance or employed private staff. I would be annoyed if I was them. I still think me and Bolam should start a picket line for arbs though.
  2. I know with some of the more modern ford cars changing the fuel filter can be a right PITA. You have to tow them around the block to get them going! Technology eh!!!
  3. I dont know if its been mentioned but the reason a lot of people work in the public sector is because of job security and good pensions. Take that away and you will find the better skilled people will move into the private sector where they can achieve higher pay and bonus etc. If what we want is lower skilled workers educating our children and looking after our health then this government is just the ticket.
  4. Could possibly be the gearbox is goosed. Also could be side casing that contains a bearing and also the crankcase that contains another if its never been greased. Could cost alot of money to repair or could be what rangermatt says in which case an easy cheap fix.
  5. ..........yes of course I can cut it down, I'm a professional tree surgeon and that's how I earn a living. I would then probably say can we possibly remove something else rather than the ancient oak. But, since this is the career we choose IMO it's not worth getting upset about felling trees.
  6. Well it's cheaper than my car insurance that's for sure. I'll have to check but iirc for me it's aound £600-700. In the grand scheme of things it's nothing, especially compared to what it could cost without it.
  7. Reading through all of this I think the best I can hope for is that I drop dead before retirement!
  8. Ah right thanks for pointing out the difference.
  9. The method statement should be done by the company doing the patio work. You may need to do a risk assessment in regards to the trees which is a completely different thing. I would clarify what they want from you tbh. Unless it's you involved with the the construction side. Or I could be mistaken:001_smile:
  10. hello all. boss at work is happy for me to use equipment for private work for a small fee. Its up to me how far I take it, What is there stopping me sticking an advert in my local paper and seeing what comes from it. obviously i would need to take out some public liability insurance. And if I get stuck with any thing i have the right people on hand to help me out. . how did you start things for yourselves? Advise needed please. In answer to your first question of sticking an ad in, theres nothing stopping you. Your statesment on insurance, you dont have to take out public liability insurance as its not law, but best to just in case plus its costs next to nothing. Second question, I started my own business but went subbing 90% of the time and advertised to pick up my own work. Good luck.
  11. Ah yes, didnt think of that. I suppose its the employer who gets it, no wonder more and more industries are moving to use subbies whenever and wherever they can. Still though if an employer is on site and the TIP doesnt look strong enough he could possibly be done for not telling the employee to change it. Pure speculation by me of course.
  12. I wonder if the HSE could also prosecute a tree climber if they thought the TIP wasnt strong enough? For all we know the guard rail could be stronger than the average TIP. So who gets the £18,000 tax oops sorry fine then?
  13. Bugger, I was hoping for a second it was us tree workers going on strike, well gutted now!

    Own Up!?!

Yeah, sure it wasnt. Anyhow as mentioned its nothing but a good bit of healthy debating. The most important bit being of course, that I am right.
  15. Some type of barrier that actually stops pedestrians! A set of hedgetrimmers and chainsaw that cuts hedges to the height the customer REALLY wants and not the height you agreed on at the start.
  16. Sounds impressive. I thought they were a good bit of kit when I saw them at the APF. If husky dont deliver on this then they deserve to never, ever sell a saw again! So then the release date is..........
  17. Can you elaborate? Kev, I assume the old spanner will do the bar nut but what does the larger end on the new spanner work on?
  18. Not if you use the rodenator pro, you can dig many graves. That thing looks great, I reckon a bit of oxy acetylene would be more effective.
  19. Just watched it, excellent stuff. The fluorescent mouse was obviously the best bit.
  20. What the idea with the combi spanner? Is the spark plug different or something?
  21. Now that is a bargain. Surprised they can make a profit out of that!

    Own Up!?!

Quite right. I do have quite a few customers that get us back in to repollard every few years but it is usually just the cost that stops it. The worst cases are usually land lords or HA who just get the tree topped to shut the tenant up for a bit but then don't bother with any further management.

    Own Up!?!

Actually I think those trees look quite good. No joke btw in case you think I am taking the pee. They look different sort of old and gnarly. Surely our job is to manage trees to fit in with the urban environment, whatever that entails.
  24. I doubt anyone will answer that with any certainty tbh. I do know for fact well ime, whic hboviously the same thing! That when you sever roots on one side the tree is very, very prone to wind throw and going the other way. Ive seen quite a few do this due to fencing, walling, utility work etc, plus when the roots are hard up against good foundations and cant anchor.
