  1. hello all. boss at work is happy for me to use equipment for private work for a small fee. Its up to me how far I take it, What is there stopping me sticking an advert in my local paper and seeing what comes from it. obviously i would need to take out some public liability insurance. And if I get stuck with any thing i have the right people on hand to help me out. . how did you start things for yourselves? Advise needed please. In answer to your first question of sticking an ad in, theres nothing stopping you. Your statesment on insurance, you dont have to take out public liability insurance as its not law, but best to just in case plus its costs next to nothing. Second question, I started my own business but went subbing 90% of the time and advertised to pick up my own work. Good luck.
  2. Ah yes, didnt think of that. I suppose its the employer who gets it, no wonder more and more industries are moving to use subbies whenever and wherever they can. Still though if an employer is on site and the TIP doesnt look strong enough he could possibly be done for not telling the employee to change it. Pure speculation by me of course.
  3. I wonder if the HSE could also prosecute a tree climber if they thought the TIP wasnt strong enough? For all we know the guard rail could be stronger than the average TIP. So who gets the £18,000 tax oops sorry fine then?
  4. Bugger, I was hoping for a second it was us tree workers going on strike, well gutted now!

    Own Up!?!

Yeah, sure it wasnt. Anyhow as mentioned its nothing but a good bit of healthy debating. The most important bit being of course, that I am right.
  6. Some type of barrier that actually stops pedestrians! A set of hedgetrimmers and chainsaw that cuts hedges to the height the customer REALLY wants and not the height you agreed on at the start.
  7. Sounds impressive. I thought they were a good bit of kit when I saw them at the APF. If husky dont deliver on this then they deserve to never, ever sell a saw again! So then the release date is..........
  8. Can you elaborate? Kev, I assume the old spanner will do the bar nut but what does the larger end on the new spanner work on?
  9. Not if you use the rodenator pro, you can dig many graves. That thing looks great, I reckon a bit of oxy acetylene would be more effective.
  10. Just watched it, excellent stuff. The fluorescent mouse was obviously the best bit.
  11. What the idea with the combi spanner? Is the spark plug different or something?
  12. Now that is a bargain. Surprised they can make a profit out of that!

    Own Up!?!

Quite right. I do have quite a few customers that get us back in to repollard every few years but it is usually just the cost that stops it. The worst cases are usually land lords or HA who just get the tree topped to shut the tenant up for a bit but then don't bother with any further management.

Actually I think those trees look quite good. No joke btw in case you think I am taking the pee. They look different sort of old and gnarly. Surely our job is to manage trees to fit in with the urban environment, whatever that entails.
  15. I doubt anyone will answer that with any certainty tbh. I do know for fact well ime, whic hboviously the same thing! That when you sever roots on one side the tree is very, very prone to wind throw and going the other way. Ive seen quite a few do this due to fencing, walling, utility work etc, plus when the roots are hard up against good foundations and cant anchor.

  17. There has got to be something up with that Vermeer! If thats how they really run then they are going to sell none, surely.
  18. Everyone should make a stand and buy the new husky top handle rather than the 201 when its available. The only reason I preferred tihl over husky was reliability. It seems as though that going out the window now though!

    Own Up!?!

Fair enough, I suppose our different experiences shape our decisions. With mine, (most of my work is domestic) most healthy trees I remove are removed simply for light or leaf reasons. Any trees I top are usually for the exact same reason but the customer still wants to keep the tree and a thin or reduction etc won't fit the bill. I understand what you mean about rot and killing someone etc but in reality it hardly ever happens and ime the majority of trees I've seen fail have usually not been pollarded topped etc. In fact I am struggling to think of any failures i have witnessed from topped unions etc. Well unless you count leylandiis that have been hedged then left for many years, they seem to do a good job of splitting out. Not saying your wrong and I'm right but ime it's not a problem that I've came across. Plus alot of really old pollards/toppings look really good good IMO.

    Own Up!?!

Im that good at my job I could go round topping trees that I havent even been asked to work on never mind get paid for and I would still have loads of work. I still cannot fathom though why people think a bit of topping is the devils work and a disgrace but will then quite happily fell a nice and healthy tree! Logically its makes no sense what so ever to me. Fair enough if people dont like the way it looks, nothing wrong with that opinion.

    Own Up!?!

I provide a service that my customers ask for. I will give other options and advice but won't force the issue. I fell plenty of healthy trees, is that more of a crime?

    Own Up!?!

Apart from the rips I've more our less done that to loads of trees. A bit more care and a but more shaping and it woulda been sound.
  25. I think it has to be both. I doubt these days (well in the uk anyway) there are many experienced good workers who don't have the qualifications to back it up.
