  1. The only 6x4 Fastrac ever made! Was built for Eastern Electricity Board for repairing power lines that had come down in storms. Apparently it had fantastic traction and you could hardly see where it had travelled across fields.
  2. Have a look at Palax - very good, reliable machines. Caledonian Forestry are the dealers
  3. Why are you focusing on the emergency call out bit? Go and see if you can talk to someone about the services you offer - woodland management, etc deal with the trees before they become an issue and emergency.
  4. Just thought I would share this picture I took this morning from the office door so people could remember what a blue sky looked like!! Oops, dont know why its sideways but its still blue.
  5. Check your bar as well, make sure the sides are smooth and not got burrs on.
  6. Really!!!! So how come some dealers are able to offer such big discounts? And it's a phrase I hear in the shooting world as well -" no margin in shotgun cartridges these days mate, don't know why I bother stocking them!!" We live in rip off Britain as we are told on a regular basis. If there was next to no margin in a retailers main goods, they wouldn't stock them.
  7. A customer showed me a net of "Real Logs" he had bought from a garage - softwood about 6 inches long but huge chinks, moisture content over 50% and full of wood worm holes!!!
  8. Don't play guitar but the lad in the video with long blonde hair is my little nephew. [ame] [/ame] They are touring so could be coming to a town near you soon!
  9. You wont be disappointed. I have an 07 super cab just clocked 95k miles. Rear springs replaced a few month back cost about £240 for the parts and £80 fitting. Comfortable, reliable, great turning circle.
  10. I had Defender 90s for 20 years and then switched to a Ranger super cab. The Ranger is a lot more comfortable, roomier, warmer, has fantastic turning circle, better mpg and been largely reliable. I do not tow much but when I did it was a 3 ton Ifor full of logs and I would say compared to my mates 110 it did struggle and mpg dropped a lot! They are high geared as well, really dont like reversing with foot totally off clutch, even in low box. A relative of mine is a mechanic for a major utility company who predominantly used Land Rovers but they started switching to Toyota HiLux and Ford Rangers a few years back as they felt the LRs weren't up to the job any more (sure he said the chassis were bending alarmingly easy!). In light of Land Rover obviously not wanting to produce a commercial vehicle any more I think we will all have to switch to the Japanese based pick ups. Apparently there is a new Ranger coming out next year with more power and a true 3.5ton towing capacity.
  11. Thanks for all the comments guys, this has been going around and around in my head for months!!! To answer some questions: I did buy 150 tons and we have a weighbridge on site so I know that's what I got It is predominantly silver birch and beech thinnings I had not considered the fact it will take me longer to process the shorter material so that was a good point I had considered if you put 150 ton of 2.5m lengths end to end would it be the same as 150 ton of 3m lengths end to end - suppose it should be really It does look like I have used more off the pile than I would have thought but the shorter/higher stack idea explains this Anyway, my new stock that has come in for next week is all 3m and a darn site cheaper so I'm a happy logger with that!!
  12. This time last year I bought in 150 tons of hardwood from a well known national company. A few weeks later I realised the stacks just didn't look right compared to the other stock I already had (and I don't just mean the way the lorry driver had stacked it - how it has managed to stay up all this time I don't know!). So out came the tape measure - the new stock averaged 2.5m in length whereas everything I have bought over last 6 years has been 3m. When I queried this with the company they said they cut it short so they could get two bays on their forwarder. I was not too happy with this especially as it was some of the most expensive per ton I have bought. All year I have been thinking is 150 ton of 2.5m stems the same as 150 ton of 3m stems?? Now I am cutting it I would say no. First off I don't sell by weight. Secondly, it takes 9 cuts to get 10 logs out of a 2.5m length and 11 to get 12 out of a 3m. So every 2.5m I cut I am down 2 lengths that could be halved, quartered etc so volume wise I am going to end up with a fair bit less than I envisaged which obviously makes it even more expensive. I cannot remember when I ordered it whether length of timber was mentioned. Buyer beware!!
  13. If you go down either route you may have to load your own cartridges as not many manufacture 8 or 10 bore and they are expensive
  14. I have had mine for 4 years and it has probably cut 600 tons and it has only needed two springs and two studs in all that time. So plus side it has been very reliable, easy to set up, you can change a chain quickly and it is a good over all machine. Downsides, the ram, conveyor/chainsaw and splitting knife levers are all large and the latter two can get in the way, the ram speed can be a bit slow and we have modified mine as the infeed conveyor was bending. I would say whatever machine you look at, don't believe the claims people make for what they can produce in a day. Once guy I spoke to said he could do double what I was doing but he had taken every safety cover off and disconnected sensors!! Sorry, I like fingers and hands were they are!
  15. Shelby on Ax-Men uses his underwater all the time!!
  16. A reliable registered supplier should not sell you logs by the ton - wet logs are heavy logs! Buy by volume. If it's a log boiler I would guess it will take half metre logs?
  17. Jon - some of your sentences should be on the internet - "If you can read this, you are one of the top 2% in the country"!!!
  18. An International day today - my 475 powering the processor and a borrowed 956 for the trailer.
  19. Looks exactly like my Palax one except the powered rolled on the Palax sits in the middle of the front bar and the frame extended where the roller is on the Kellfri one. We chopped this off some time ago as logs dont roll over square bar and have fitted a free spinning roller there instead.
  20. Environment Agency uses those Mitsubishis, quite often sell them through Brightwells Auctions. Lada Nivas are still made and were being imported by somebody a few years ago but dont know if they still are and as they were new, would not have been cheap. I always liked the Discovery Commercial, but whenever I was changing vehicle could never find a good one locally and I need a pick up now anyway. Always thought of it as the thinking mans Defender - just as capable off road for most people, lot more comfortable on road and probably bigger load bay.
  21. Great photos, thank you. Love the Sprinter vans. Mercedes had some on their stand at the last APF including a six wheeler but they were tame compared to these!
  22. I've got an 07 Ranger super cab and love it. The suicide door does stay open by itself. I find it a very useful configuration and cannot understand why there are not more super cabs on the road. I cannot remember the last time I saw someone in the back of a double cab. The Ranger is available in single, super and double cab and you used to be able to order it as a tipper direct from Ford as well, not sure if you still can. Only the Ranger, Navarra and Isuzu have the opening suicide door.
