Recent frosty weather has had me busy last 3 weekends but I’m very small scale and only sell about 12cube a year. Done 4 already this winter so promising start. Wife might get a present for Christmas !!! Although I don’t think she wants a generator or a log splitter !!

I keep the new chains in their boxes lined up in an old drawer in the back of the pick-up cab, and have stopped hoarding old chains as they never got re-used on dirty jobs or stumps just filled up bags and boxes. Same with files I keep them in the packet in a box file and chuck them when blunt. It has taken a massive change in my OCD to throw stuff out, used to hoard all sorts of crap in boxes. Wife made me do a "life laundry" and clear out all my old junk, was difficult at first but felt happier at the end and you can easily swing a cat in the shed now !!

I’ve posted a few times that I’ve dropped my old mittox in the river a couple of times, I emptied it and refuelled immediately and ran it hard. Then left it over night in the airing cupboard (wife didn’t love that) and sprayed it all down with WD40 the next day. It worked fine for years. But I do have OCD about keeping my kit clean, sharp and lubricated.

I think on here those people have been referred to as log gobblins, I call them log rustlers as they know exactly what they are doing is robbing you. They never get offered anything again and in the long run its them that lose out, 'cos good guys will always be good guys and pricks are always going to be pricks ! On a more positive note you've still got your new dog to brighten the day !!

Just noticed that it's 56cc with oregon bar and chain and comes with a 3 year warranty, now that is a lot for the money. If i could justify it i might be tempted myself !!

Does make you wonder that if someone hasn't the strength to start the saw then maybe there is a message there that you shouldn't be using one in the first place. £99 is a cheap saw that is likely only to get light home owner use, a bit like my old dearly departed mittox which finally died after many years of hard service as a firewood saw, and if kept clean and sharp with decent quality fuel could last someone for quite a few years. My Aldi splitting maul is about 10 years old and still going strong.

A good mix of both sizes and of hard and soft wood is the best for my stoves, larch mixed with sycamore and scot's pine mixed with beech is good. The golden rule is to only burn dry wood 'cos wet wood is worse than useless .

I terms of drying wood a mate has built a lean-to which is south facing using old double glazing he got when they knocked the local cottage hospital down. He has sheeted one end with the stuff they use to let air into cattle sheds and polythene roll up door at the other end. It drys wood out great and cost almost nothing to build as most of the stuff he got out of skips. What some call a solar kiln.

I burn mostly larch with odds and sods of syc and beech. Larch is great in a stove, dries and processes easily and round my way there is plenty.

I put mine in the bottom oven of the Aga for an hour then melt the wax on the stove top, takes about 45 minutes to do the whole thing. Mine has loads of repairs that I've done and keeps me warm and a wee bit damp at worst. Way better than any nylon jacket i've ever used, where you can be very hot and wet or very cold and wet. -
I’ve an aluminium one from screwfix under £20 does the job, especially with a bungee cord to secure bundles of branches for sawing.

20 year old Barbour bedale jacket, gets wiped with a sponge and re waxed every year. Totally knackered has never really kept me dry but it still has a few years left in it and I’ll replace with something army surplus as the surplus trousers are great. -
Me too, when the teeth get short I like to drop the rakers an extra bit especially if it’s a short bar on the big saw (365), nothing better than throwing some big chip !

They have a kind of rat toothed design that blunts really easily and need sharpened after nearly every cut, make impressive sparks tho. Don't waste your time or money hand sharpened standard chain is 1000% better. -

I had a little 40cc Mittox saw that cost about £100 new and ran it for about 10 years. Dropped it in the river twice and just dried it in the airing cupboard and it came back to life twice. Just kept it clean and sharp and it owed me nothing when I sold it on to a chap needing a wee saw to use for pruning, even got £20 for it. Maybe I was just luck, but if you keep you kit clean and sharp it does seem to last. Most important is sharp as a dull chain will mean extra stress on the saw.

Husky 440 is a a good little firewood saw bloody good fuel consumption too. Also get someone to teach you how to competently hand sharpen and you’ll get on like a house on fire.

What a wee cracker, I’ve a lazy old Tibetan terrier that sleeps in the passenger seat and acts as supervisor, not done a days work in his life but I wouldn’t go logging without him !

We have a massive shoot nearby that releases thousands of pheasants, and the local raptor and corvid population has grown exponetially with an associated decline in the native song birds, local RSPB guy told me this. The shoot provides employment for around 8 people all year round and loads more casual in the season but it isn't a positive thing for the countryside.

I agree it looks like a good shed to grow mushrooms on wet logs, need as much airflow as possible, or store very small amounts in small stacks with loads of space around each stack.
