  1. Slightly off topic but firewood price related, 8 ton bags for £200, if local to me I'd be interested. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Logs-Wood-Timber-Wood-Burner-Firewood-8x-Ton-Bags-200-/361168878155?pt=UK_HG_FireplacesMantelpieces_RL&hash=item541757ba4b
  2. Loads of different pics put up regularly, not just forestry machines - mega saw/bar combo up just now.
  3. That's what beats the circulars, you can't saw 14"/350mm without going up quite a bit in budget. 11" and below they can motor through the cut with less maintenance but losing bulk per action as smaller timber.
  4. link up with timber haulier to see if opportunity to run in tandem with him. You'll need pins but he'll have the contracts and will load you also Edit: I don't know the haulage contractors down there but chances are Euroforest, Tilhill, FC (or whatever called in Wales) can point you in right direction. When speaking to these people it's the harvesting dept you want to speak with. And always remember - Google is your friend! Edit 2: you need to know how to handle your lorry and have right attitude when going into the woods, if you can't turn in tight spaces and know how to avoid getting stuck on poor quality roads then chances are it's not for you.
  5. What is optimum size for a tafjun?
  6. You're right in both have their place. Circular is quicker cut, less sawdust and easier to maintain - only need to touch it when swapping for sharper blade every couple of months. Bar/chain is slower, more sawdust, needs oil and tensioned occasionally plus sharpened more often. But bar machines can do far bigger timber for similar budget. If I was going to keep doing firewood I'd look for 40 to 50cm bar machine (like hakki's) to see how they compare volume wise against 30cm tct.
  7. I have 365 and 560xpg. For what the OP is looking for then 365 would be better
  8. Or you could just change blade, also a ten minute job! I'd go TCT blade everytime if cutting sub 30cm, only advantage the chain machines have is able to do bigger timber.
  9. Booker writes for Daily Telegraph and his columns are usually detailed and well researched. I didn't read Mail article but this was published in DT few weeks ago http://www.telegraph.co.uk/comment/11305122/Forget-your-gas-cooker-were-headed-for-zero-carbon-Britain.html
  10. Palax firewood processor. Cuts up to 300mm
  11. I don't have our blades to hand so don't know the exact teeth/rake details. One blade though, which looks similar to ebay one, is prone to snagging and the others aren't due to angle of teeth - they have anti kickback feature also. They don't cut any slower than the more aggressive one but with a smoother action too. Probability of snagging will also depend on what machine you have too and how restrained the timber is plus size of said timber.
  12. Very good article and covers lot of good points - with no focus on softwood planting where is tomorrow's commercial timber going to come from plus the decline in jobs. The UK debt being out of control is well documented, the trade deficit not so much: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-30585540. If we could get some kind of balance into out forestry industry we could create jobs from planting right through to milling and cut down on imports.
  13. It snags and jams.
  14. I didn't know that about vat, are you sure? That blade looks quite an aggressive cut, not sure if best for cross cutting firewood
  15. Cutting Solutions is who we use, good prices and service
  16. I think there's someone with a Vimek out your way, not sure what it weighs - 5ish ton?
  17. I know what you're saying Treequip but if within your width/length/lighting & signage/ weight specs etc then you're legal. From what I can see Eddie is trying to establish those specs in black and white so that there is no ambiguity whether legal or not
  18. Is their spec sheet correct.. Says it only weighs a ton. Surely time crane, bolsters etc that can't be right? http://www.kranman.com/images/pdf/bisonbroschyr/Kranman_Export.pdf
  19. I must admit £25k is cheaper than I thought it would be. They have their place I guess, but sorry, I've never once know these wee forwarders to turn out decent volume day in day out
  20. You'll never do 30t a day with that J, remember you also need cutter to fell trees too Edit - sorry, just realised bison is the forwarder. Still won't do 30t a day
  21. Nice little kit but time you buy it (and they won't be cheap) then pay operator will you get enough production to justify it? I suspect not
  22. Apologies for derailing Bgt's thread but did I know see a post on here from German climber which said they don't loler climbing kit in Germany but instead use common sense when to chuck kit?
