  1. Each to their own but why someone would want to cut or handle short lengths doesn't really make sense to me, for firewood ideally I'd want 5m lengths as works well on our log deck. Sellers want to move timber quickly with most sales are by the ton and weight is weight obviously. All the lorries is use have integrated weighing systems so easy to check what's on them. Edit: I don't actually know any timber lorries that don't have weigh systems as they want each and every load to be 100% full
  2. Reflecting on it I think the artic that lifts from me actually runs with 4 bolsters of 3m, I know it's 3x3.7m and 2x6.2m but can't actually remember the other configurations for sure. Not that it's really important as can only run up to their weight limit anyway
  3. Fair enough if timber been down for a while, most people I know (including myself) want it moved on ASAP as it starts to disappear if left at roadside. I will put price up for next batch, not massively though as want to build long term relationships Of course it's more productive to process longer stuff than short.
  4. The longer the better as quicker to process with less handling, lorry will run out of weight before it runs out of space. I put roadside hw on market at £40, could sell everything I have 5 times over.
  5. Ok thanks. Craigslist is in UK now also, think it's Craigslist.co.uk

  7. Thanks Acacia. It's lovely wood, just case of wondering best way to keep it as purple as possible as can fade in sunlight. Steve has worked with it before so had some tips.
  8. Get him one of these [ame] [/ame] *courtesy of forestmachineoperatorjobs
  9. 4.5 might be bit young, we were always rough and tumble youngsters but thankfully at that age you seem to bend and bounce rather than break.. Though that did happen too! Anyway my point is by time we were 11 onwards we'd been around machinery and stuff for good few years so had healthy respect for how easily things can go wrong. Due to number of machines and cutters in woods in those days (plus far less h&s) accidents and fatalities were fairly regular occurrences. If he's really keen things like bagging kindlers, loading small bits into car etc will keep him involved. Get him to help you map out what you're going to do etc
  10. Different generation but I had a little Sachs dolmar when I was eleven and used to cut with it, think it was 33cc but might be wrong. Was great getting involved with the wood. Edit, started driving farm tractors and the county skidder when I was 12ish
  11. Ok thanks Steve, been googling it a bit and seems no definitive answer regarding how to keep the purple nice and bright
  12. Couple big bits of Purpleheart getting made into window seats, mobile phone for scale.
  13. Many thanks Adw
  14. Millions of pounds of public money to pay for grey squirrel cull - Telegraph
  15. You can hire power barrows for a weekend, get everything cut and prepped ready for extraction then get it all out in day or so. You get high tip ones too so can empty straight into pickup or trailer
  16. Engelbert Strauss are ok trousers and think you'd get two pairs for £240. There's a review thread on them here somewhere. Not sure many trousers have sweatability rating though
  17. No, similar to old style sherried macallan though. Glenfarclas is another one worth trying
  18. If a Lanson trap is box propped up on roped stick and baited then I used to do that when a very young lad!
  19. Try Glendronach for a change, far better than Macallan these days.
  20. Just googled magpies protection status, seems you need a licence to control them. That surely needs looked at
  21. Our area used to all be shooting estates with keepers reducing the predators, not just foxes etc but crows, magpies and other nest raiders too. The keepers are long gone and any wildlife management these days is on increasing raptor numbers, I wonder if that contributes to decline of ground nesting birds too? Edit: the number of magpies around these days is remarkable
  22. Our 30t 2.2m horizontal log splitter now on Arbtrader/gumtree at bargain price. http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/log-splitter-30-ton-22m7ft-3-stroke-prepare-timber-for-firewood-processor/1095057219

Can get wheeled ones too but have never worked with one of those.
  24. Ardmore is heavily peated, ones in supermarkets are young too and 46% from memory which takes getting used too. Try a wee splash of water. Penderyn is good stuff too and lovely people
  25. What about a powered barrow to get your wood out?
