  1. I've put couple forestry tyres up on gumtree for a friend so give me a shout if of interest. I can't remember what he said that he was looking for so ignore the price for time being - I'll amend it once I speak with him. http://www.gumtree.com/p/cars-vans-motorbikes/forestry-tyres-and-rims-nokia-231-34-14-ply/1098389752
  2. The bureaucracy and regulation is why I've never pitched for FC work and turned it down when they've sounded me out. Bit of a shame really as I've deliberately configured my outfit for small compartments which are uneconomic for the larger operators. Life's too short for all that nonsense though! Incidentally I looked a job today and even though private ground I've to do risk assessments/methodology for refuelling, working near watercourses etc. I'm not sure if "we don't spill fuel as its too expensive" will be sufficient.

  4. I was going to watch it but decided not to as thought it would just depress me and I've had a good day
  5. The Forestry Contractors Association are arguing the case with FISA too, there are regular updates in their newsletter. Depending on your area of interest it may be worth joining them so a coordinated approach. http://www.fcauk.com

  7. What a great video, someone doing things the way they've done it for centuries. Also a good reminder that the more we drape ourselves in hi vest and regulations the more jobs and industry will disappear overseas.
  8. Know the feeling, I came up behind a battered transit van doing 20mph up road beside our yard, they indicated me to overtake and as I passed the occupants were rubbernecking the yard. Hopefully fact I pulled in, jumped out and photographed them and van means they know they've been spotted, course if they want in then they'll get in. We have three gates plus dead weights needing moved to get in, anything to make it as hard as possible.
  9. Trying to, people keep ordering though. Still got couple hundred ton stock though so works well if get rid of that.
  10. I'd guess about 5m, look on Palax website and it's there, mega log deck I think is how they class it
  11. We've got the biggest Palax one, can't remember exact rating but I'd guess it takes about 12 cubic m. It needs kit to load it etc but imo it's the most efficient, labour saving device in whole firewood production chain.
  12. Good video, thanks for posting. Out of interest why were you topping some of them?
  13. Distance hauled is crucial likewise what diameter it is too, chipwood goes down to 3", if you want 10 to 15" stuff for processor then that could've went as logs so has higher value.
  14. As NR says above burn holes with heat gun, better than slashing as not so prone to rip afterwards
  15. I think things slowly heading in right direction, May election will be crucial though. How confident will you be if it ends up Labour in govt with support from the Scottish socialists?

  17. Addition to above: if the worlds population is increasing substantially every year, which is fact and not a theory. Then it follows that mankind will demand more resources/emit more CO2 servicing this population increase. If we are in fact facing Armageddon due to increase of CO2 emissions then why is population increase never ever mentioned?
  18. I'm not sure it's fair to say people taking issue with man made climate change are in same category as creationists. I remember man made climate change scientists/enthusiasts telling us we wouldn't see snow again. Given what I've seen with my own eyes - and not a projected theory - then forgive me if I keep an open mind. Likewise I believe there has been no global temperature increase, inflicted by man or otherwise, for 18 years. This flies in the face of what the models projected so again I'll keep an open mind. Likewise I understand that some organisations are claiming that 2014 is the warmest year ever. Other sources state that this claim is based on results from one country only. The data from the rest of the world indicates no change.
  19. It doesn't matter what the policy is or how virtuous it is. The state should never put individuals under threat of losing employment for having a different opinion.
  20. So we live in a free and democratic society but if an individual disagrees with Green Party policy they should be summarily dismissed from their post? Or to put it a different way.. If Nigel Farage picks a policy, he then expresses opinion that all state employees who don't fully support this policy should be summarily dismissed you'll fully support him?
  21. Are you actually being serious?
  22. Maybe this should be in the free speech thread instead.. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-26187711
  23. Good post Kevin. Of course Thatcher made mistakes but she's head and shoulders over anyone on political scene today.
  24. Brown followed Tory spending plans originally as per his manifesto pledge. Then he turned on the taps: "After 2000 public spending increased rapidly, with a peak of 45.5 percent of GDP in 2010 in the afermath of the financial crisis of 2008, followed by a slow decrease in subsequent years." Thatcher was actually against bank deregulation but her advisors argued strongly in favour so she conceded. Also worth noting that the supervisory structure was replaced by brown prior to the bank crash. I think it was Canada which also experienced issues with their banks, however they hadn't mortgaged themselves to the hilt in the good days so moved on very quickly.
  25. Again that's not really true, it's was Broon's great spending spree that buggered us and got us in so deep we can't get out. We're still spending 100 billion per year more than we take in and the bank support is long gone. The bank shares will ultimately be sold (some already have) and cash recouped. For the record I'd have prosecuted the bankers who fiddled the books
