  1. Had mine for about 12 years and only used it a few times until Nov 2011 when I started firewood production. Its now on a few times a day and a cuppa from that is so much better than from a flask. The base is getting pretty beat up now - could only be from the heat as its kept in a Wolf box.
  2. Thanks for the comments guys. James - calm down there lad!! Silky - I think he can chip four wagon loads, so about 100 ton, in about half a day - thats if theres no breakdowns!! Gray Git - no, chipper belongs to Park End of Wark in Northumberland Josy - Its up at Consett My wife thought the trailer was from Ikea!!!
  3. You may recall the pics I put up before Christmas of the two artics cab to cab unloading at my friends yards - well this was a few days later when the chipper came in to make biomass grade chip. The trailer is our new Vreten which has been used a few times now for moving timber around the site and to another site. My mate managed to tip it over the second time he used it as he had forgot to put the legs down!!! We think the crane is probably too big for the trailer, they seem a bit mismatched but we will have to live with it. It just gets two 3m bays of timber on but they have to be right up against the head board and each other and there is about a 3ft overhang.
  4. Just paid £48 for 25 litres of Husqvarna saw oil, apparantly its all due to increase in price again fairly soon.
  5. I have read about this and saw them on the "Tales from the Wild Wood" series where they claimed the moisture content was 1%. My thoughts are: is it possible to get wood that low? How long would it stay that low once delivered to a customers shed/garage/etc? How much can you charge for it as it has to be a premium product? I deliver to customers who have tried kiln dried logs at a guaranteed less than 20% and they don't like it - burns too fast and is too expensive. So I would be dubious as to its market potential.
  6. My mates dad has two Suffolk Punches and he reckons I should ditch the Palax for one of these!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFeR8Qlkrfg]Draft Horse Powered Treadmill woodsplitter 014.AVI - YouTube[/ame]
  7. If you're using the vehicle for work, how can it be ag registered as to comply with the regulations, you will have to meet the following criteria: "Vehicles used just for agriculture, horticulture and forestry This includes tractors, agricultural engines and light agricultural vehicles used off-road. It also includes ‘limited use’ vehicles used for short journeys (not more than 1.5 kilometres) on the public road between land that’s occupied by the same person." This is from the Gov.uk web site. So I read that as you could only operate that vehicle on the road within 1.5km of your base and only to go to land owned by you. Or am I missing something???
  8. Remember...a babys not just for Christmas!!!
  9. Depends what your budget is. If new, look at the latest "4x4" magazine as they have a pick up review - the new Ranger comes out top yet again. After 20 years of Land Rover ownership I bought an 07 Ford Ranger Super cab - its great because you can open the rear doors giving full access to area behind seats - only Ranger and Navarra extra cabs do this (brand new Isuzu does as well). I have been impressed with it - great turning circle, good heater and ventilation, good economy, super cab style suits me perfectly, good off road; only downside is I don't rate the seats at all - got a cushion on mine so I can sit higher up (and I'm 6ft 1"!) and see properly, would have my old Freelander seats in tomorrow if I could. Horses for courses - ask friends if they have trucks if you can have a drive, what dealers are local, etc. Good luck.
  10. I'm sure max payload is just over 4 ton so by the time a decent crane is added, this would be down to around 3 which doesn't give you much capacity. Initially I thought the price was high as you can pick up a good ex mod truck for around three grand but obviously the crane and winch and the fact it is all ready road registered add value. We looked at similar for moving timber around the yard and extracting from woodlands and decided forwarding trailer and crane was more sensible - larger capacity and no problems registering.
  11. First time out with our new Vreten forestry trailer my mate turned it over - forgot to put the stabiliser legs down!! I wasn't there and he knew if he took a picture it would be all over t'internet! Luckily he was all right.
  12. Steve, one of my local competitors who prides himself on selling kiln dried logs, sells 10 litre nets of "natural kindling" for £7.50!! He built a tumbler to go on the end of the conveyor of his processor which takes all the loose bark and stuff off and as far as I am aware this is the "natural kindling". I sell nets of kindling that I have made from old pallets, 9KG net for £3.50. Personally I don't see anything wrong with your new stuff but joe public has other ideas. I think finding the market could be a problem - a bit like the product of the TR70 log chopper:great machine but would public buy the product??? Probably not!! Good luck with whatever you decide anyway.
  13. Older members may remember a picture from an off road event about 20 years ago when a NATO hitch came detached from the stuck vehicle, went through the back window of the Range Rover towing it, went along the roof line inside, took the passenger head rest out and exited throught the front screen!! Had there been a passenger in the front seat they would have been dead. I am sure a kinectic energy rope was being used at the time - I took two lessons from this : always check the security of the towing points; and why use a recovery system designed to recover armoured vehicles, on "soft skins"????
  14. Cheers Darren, get those birds blow dried so they can fly rather than paddle!!!
  15. This is only my third season doing firewood and I have done 16 deliveries this week, bringing the total from 1 Sept to 106 compared to 21 for the same period last year so I am well chuffed. Still got a long way to go to catch my mate Darren (DM Taylor Firewood) but I am pleased with the growth in customers and the good comments I am receiving. Going to enjoy some time off before firing up the processor again on Thursday...or maybe Friday!
  16. Saw much smaller ones for £22.50 outside a florists on Monday.
  17. Hush, hush;we don't use the w word, there are just less dry!!!!
  18. Not my dogs but those of friends, just thought you dog lovers would like to see. The collies are father and son. The son,Tip, on the left would be the most beautiful collie if he wasn't a working farm dog,ie always dirty, coat in tats!!
  19. My mate and I looked at these last year. Very expensive - on top of the "from £22500" price tag you have to make it road legal - we were quoted another £10k for this. Plus, your buying a truck that could be nearly 30 years old and apparently parts are fairly difficult to come by.
  20. Never seen them for £140 per tonne John, average is £240-280. Been advised to go for Balcas pellets and I think best I have been offered is £1.99 per 10kg bag from the Plumb Centre - there is one on my doorstep so I could pick and deliver when required. Would save shelling out £5500 per a truck full. Tomatin - I agree, would be struggling to make a profit on it once you take in to account delivery costs and time for handling/delivering.
  21. Been on it for 18 months and not had an enquiry from it. There is also Stoves Online but get yourself on Gumtree - I'm getting a couple of new customers weekly from here.
  22. Three bed semi, £88 per month for gas and electric.
  23. Starting to receive some enquiries from customers having pellet boilers installed. Made a few phone calls but even buying by the truck load does not bring the price down too much compared to what joe public can get delivered to his front door via the internet. Does anybody supply pellets and if so who do you buy from. I think at best I would be lucky to make £30 a ton and thats before I have delivered them:confused1:
  24. Thank you very all the suggestions. We ended up with black as the earth, red for LH indicator, blue for RH indicator, yellow for tail lights and grey for stop lights. Must make a note of that for future reference!!!
