  1. The clues in the title - BBC4!!
  2. New series starting Wednesday at 8.30pm "Writer and woodsman Rob Penn takes on a project to restore the Strawberry Cottage Wood, Monmouthshire". Start of a six part series, might be worth a look. Just found: http://www.robpenn.net/
  3. Yeah, I noticed that as well. It belonged to a landscaping company who had a matching 110 dropside and a six wheel 130 dropside. I have got photos of these but for some reason they are all pixalated. Will have to see if I can restore them somehow.
  4. 5% to the end user or 20% if they are selling it on. See section 7 HM Revenue & Customs
  5. I currently use a friends JCB loading shovel with pallet forks on. In the past have used a tracked dumper with crane (which is the one Steve Blair now has) and a Brunnet forwarder. Should know by the end of the month if we have been successful with a grant application for a forestry trailer and crane and if so will use that. The Kesla trailer and crane was our first choice but having seen a Vreteen at the APF we may change our choice!!
  6. In two years no one has asked me for softwood Sue so I would just stock kindling made of softwood. When customers ring I always offer them kindling so it helps to boost sales. You can either buy it in or I put up a load of nets during the summer using pallets I got for free.
  7. I've got one of these and would say its one of the best jackets I have bought (and goodness knows my wife would say I've bought a few!!). Its lightweight, waterproof, plenty pockets and has a four year guarantee. Its not warm but but has plenty room underneath for a fleece. Arktis Smock/Parka - Country Covers
  8. One of my local competitors delivers kiln dried logs but I have supplied a few of his customers with my seasoned timber and they say mine lasts a lot longer, their stoves burn much better with my logs, they look nicer and are cheaper. Personally, I dont see why something else should be burnt to power a kiln to dry wood that is then going to be burnt. Also, if you store kiln dried logs outside, it is my understanding they start taking moisture back in.
  9. Looks great Ross. It almost looks furry! Wouldn't mind that in my garden.
  10. Customer rang me last year and asked if my logs were smokeless? I replied "Yes madam...............as long as you don't light them!" I could hear her brain trying to work it out!! And a funny from the letters page in the paper yesterday...a reader called Nick Parsons was registering somewhere and when asked for his name he replied N Parsons . "Is that N for Neil or Nigel?" "Neither" he replied..."Oh,thats an unsual name!" came the reply!!!
  11. For Halfords trade card you need to produce City and Guilds qualifications or payslip from garage. Strange how Optima sell themselves as the biggest, best performing battery but have a relatively short guarantee compared to others.
  12. Thanks for that MDT. Optima are always in back of mind as had Land Rovers for years and they were always held up as best fitment for them.
  13. I'm after a new battery for my 2007 Ford Ranger 2.5 diesel (although when I put my reg number in it comes up as a 2006!!) and want a Bosch as I had one on previous motor and got through the two really bad winters with no problems (or may have been a Varta - first floor in the plan, cannot be sure which it was!!). Looking on various websites different capacitys are being recommned,eg an 85AH with 620CCA or one with 95AH and 750CCA. That seems quite a range to me - would it have any detrimental effect on the car fitting the larger one? And can anybody recommend a provider or Bosch (or Varta!!) batteries - Costco stock Bosch but not for Rangers and a lot of the web sites that state they do when listed on Google, dont when you actually go on their sites.
  14. A Palax KS35 would struggle on a 21hp tractor as I think any processor would. I was recommended nothing less than 35-40hp to run my KS35 and it copes with stuff up to its 14 inch diameter limit no bother. the only "problem" with the ram is the speed at which it retracts once its performed the splitting action. If cutting small diameter stuff its easy to cut ahead of the ram so the cut log then falls on the retreating ram and you rhen have to open the cage and reposition the log. Talking to Caledonian at the APF Palax have apparently fitted a booster so this does not happen.
  15. She's a real cracker Jon. Had her coat cut the other week and looked like a pup again! That red ball in the picture is her favourite - I accidently threw it over the fence two years ago; she hunted up and down this side of the fence sniffing really loudly and then stopped still and started whimpering. When I looked over the fence it was directly in line with her!! Managed to get it back and she hasn't forgotten two years on. Rarely lets me touch it, she usually picks it up and runs off with it when I appear!!
  16. That is the actual view from the door of the office - the water is probably only about 15 feet away and we have two full size windows looking out on to the marina. I think all it needs to make it better is a float plane moored on the end of the jetty! I work there one day a week and even when there has been torrential rain we always have at least half an hour of brilliant sunshine like this - I'm probably just lucky on the days I am there. Its really great to see how the light changes as the day progresses though. PS. Its Amble in Northumberland
  17. This is Meg. She belongs to a lovely old lady I garden for. Meg came from champion stock but was rejected as a pup because she has two slightly crooked teeth - apparently enough to not win competitions.
  18. How's this for a view from the office window?? Crackin' on a day like today!!
  19. Someone I know was recently stopped by the police when he was towing his trailer which has mesh sides. He was told he must have the top of the trailer secured with either a tarpaulin or cargo net.
  20. May be of interest to people who climb Climbing Harness, Karabiner, Belaying Plate, Figure Of Eight Rings. Whole Kit | eBay Ramco tend to deal in ex mod stuff
  21. You hit lucky there Jon, that sounds like a bargain!! Lucky blighter:thumbup:
  22. Ha,ha that was a good'un!!
  23. Looking good, make sure you put pictures of the finished item on. My friend and I were having a discussion on the way down to the APF about Land Rovers, both having owned them for over 20 years although I now have a Ford Ranger, and decided when the Discovery came out they should have developed more commercial versions - not just the van but a pick up as well and then it would have had the benefit of a Defender but the comfort of a Discovery. Then Land Rover may not have been left behind in the pick up market.
  24. I bought mine about 15 years ago and it had very little use until last November when I started processing logs in my mates shed. He went to the bait van one day and when he came back I was getting the fire going on the kettle - "Watch out, the boy scouts here!" he commented in a taking the pee manner. Its been used a couple of times a day since then and he's even bought his own now! Wouldn't be without one - fresh brew tastes so much better than out of a flask. Think mine is a stainless one with a cork, his is aluminium with a proper whistle!
  25. "But these individuals will consume your thinking even when you are lying in bed, their little jibes and comments will eat at you, and on comes the stress" Exactly what happened this morning!! We shoot clays every other Sunday on a farmers field and at the end the farmer, who is in his 70s, comes out for a chat. I've known the guy for about 8 years and get on with him but every time he comes out now he says,"How much is a load of logs then?" followed by "How much!!!! Daylight robbery, there'll not be much in that pick up, a cubic metre by that's nothing, £75 for that, how do you get away with that!!??!!" Now I know he probably does this just to wind me up but he got right under my skin this morning, ruined my mornings enjoyment and has been plaguing my mind ever since! Next time I will have to ask him how much he charges for his beasts considering all he's done is stick them in a field and sit on his backside for a year!!
