  1. I was talking to Andy from Welmac on Friday at the Scot Plant Show in Edinburgh and there is a new machine out that will take larger diameter branches, about 6 inch I think. The video was very impressive, the machine spat out a silver birch like a machine gun spitting out bullets!! Quite tempted to buy one if I can find the right outlet for the product.
  2. Japa 600 firewood processor listed in collective sale at Sedgefield, County Durham this weekend if anyone is interested Hexham and Northern Marts | Livestock and cattle sales serving Northumberland and the north-east
  3. And with technology it gets smaller by the day! (Bit profound for 10.20pm on a Sunday night!!)
  4. I live in Chapel Park and run a firewood business from my mates premises at Shotley Field and Consett.
  5. I'll have to keep out of your way when you start driving the mog around Newcastle Chris...wouldn't want you to run over my Ranger!!
  6. Unless you need to carry passengers I would look at the Ranger Super Cab - the small rear door opens suicide style to allow very easy access to the rear which is large enough for kit, bait bag, etc and you get a larger pick up buck than the double cab.
  7. Is it not a Unimog of some description?
  8. I attended a course recently about joining the HETAS scheme and most of it related to wood chip and pellet. The log part could have been done in about half and hour but I don't think it is worth joining unless you are one of the big national players. I think were the focus should be with logs is on a standard volume - this would be much more benficial to the consumer rather than buying by the load/truck/net/dumpy bag/ton/etc etc.
  9. In the past I have used Autoservice at Stanley and Cheviot 4x4 at North Shields for service and repair work. I know Cheviot have built vehicles to people spec before so might be worth giving either a call. My pal uses Nigel Price at Fourstones near Hexham and rates them.
  10. That was a good find Sam. I am sure SVO actually produced 150 inch chassis, they waited until they had orders from the utilities for a dozen and then made a batch so it should be a genuine 150 inch wheelbase. Probably quite rare as well.
  11. Have a look at Riko UK :: Commercial My friend bought one over two years ago and we use it regularly for splitting rings for firewood. I think he has a 12 ton model and they are extremely well made, very solid and everything is at a comfortable working height. The only downside is it weighs an absolute ton so even just to pull it back over so you can wheel it takes a monumental effort. He got the electric version by the way and it has been 100% reliable and far outstrips anything else we have seen when we have been at shows.
  12. he reckons 5 ton hardwood a month.. he has a big draughty old farm house... Is that right Nick? Would oil or gas not be cheaper as the cost price of 5 ton of hardwood delivered has to be at least £250 before you even begin to split it to correct size?
  13. Does carrying the Citroen on the front not offset the Jensen on the back?
  14. I would hazzard a guess that most of the new Defenders sold over the last few years have been to people like him. They became very trendy (and expensive) even to the point where you see mummys driving them to school and I doubt any of them would know what a difflock is!! I would also say the vast majority of Land Rovers sold never get used for what they were built for, off road wise, hence the 2 wheel drive Freelanders and Evoques.
  15. I ran a set on my Series 2A SWB pick up for a year or so and competed in trials regularly as well play days and I always said the only thing that got the truck stuck was me! It would go anywhere on those tyres. When I got my first 90 I put them on that but after a few hairy moments on wet roads at roundabouts I decided they had to go and replaced them with Michelin XCLs.
  16. "I wondered if it was a LOLER issue with bulk bags - ie not worth getting them inspected so that's why they are now seen as disposable within the building industry. The same issues obviously apply to our industry too - if the bags are going to be lifted then LOLER applies. How's that for a can of worms..." Could well be an issue like this. I have just been given a load of small dumpy bags by a mate who does some work in his mates engineering business. They get metal products delivered in these bags, about 500x400x500 with top flaps, but the company they buy off will not accept them back as they say once used they cannot be safely reused. Even though they are the small ones they are still rated to carry 1000kgs but they are ideal for putting waste in when I am gardening and still be able to lift by myself in to the back of the pick up.
  17. I had a Firestone SAT (that shows you how old I am!!) vulcanised umpteen years ago on the understanding it was for off road use only. The fitter said they would normally only vulcanise larger tyres like truck and excavator ones.
  18. Forgot to mention only the Ranger/Mazda and the Navarra extra cabs actually have the opening rear door which is a real plus point. Cannot understand why Toyota do not do it.
  19. Thanks for all the replies. I spoke to my friend earlier tonight and he was starting to have a few concerns as well, main one being the item was listed on ebay and then withdrawn only for the seller to contact my friend and say he could have it for the buy it now price which now I think of it, there was no buy it now price where you would normally see it, it was just mentioned in the text of the description. In my view, this is therefore a transaction outside of ebay which is the classic VPP scam if you google it. We are going to contact him tomorrow and either arrange to see it (although we are in Newcastle and he is in Aberdeen!) or have it shipped down here and we will pay cash on delivery. I must say I was extremely disappointed with the "quality" of service I received from the ebay help desk and once again have benefitted from the power of Arbtalk! Cheers, guys.
  20. It does seem to be more of a US facility. Searching google it would appear most of the scams happen when people have bought outside of ebay, ie on Craigslist, and are then offered ebay VPP. I just wish the operator I spoke to had been UK based and knew what she was talking about! I think paying through Paypal would be safer myself.
  21. A friend and I have purchased a vehicle through ebay. The seller has sent an invoice which states it is involved in the Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) program. This provides protection up to £50,000 against certain losses with some types of fraud. The money is paid in to an account managed by ebay inc. and they hold the money until we have received the vehicle, are happy with it and then inform them and they pay the seller. My concerns are there is no mention on the ebay web site of the VPP and the bank account name we have to pay is a foreign name, albeit a Barclays sort code and account number - not ebay holding account as you would expect for one of their representatives accounts. After being on the telephone to ebay "help desk" for 20 minutes I have just been cut off! The lady did not inspire me with confidence as she seemed to know less than I did. Any one used this system before???
  22. Hi Jon, pm sent re lights Cheers mate
  23. I feel in awe of people like you who can take a piece of timber and turn it in to something beautiful like this. You should be really proud.
  24. Got my first sale of firewood through the Arbtalk firewood directory (despite being registered on it since last June) and then the customer recommended me to his father in law wh:thumbup:o I delivered a load to today. And both will probably order further loads in the coming weeks.
