  1. I'm very happy with my Ford Ranger Super Cab - very quiet on the road (much quieter than my friends dads Ranger Rover Vogue!), very easy to drive and comfortable; super cab is very versatile - gives plenty of space to stow items you want to keep clean, and still a good size load bed for delivering firewood. MPG averages low thirties. Downsides - you can tell its two wheel drive on the road, especially in the wet / ice; and as others have said, dont think it would be up to fulfilling its three ton towing capacity. Funnily enough, I was just having this conversation with a mate today who was trying to decide if he should change his four year old Discovery Commercial. "Remember what you did a few months back" I said, "You wouldn't do that with any other pick up!" He came in the yard towing his plant trailer and an item of machinery and we put it on the weigh bridge - all up it was just under 8 tons - 2.7 for the Discovery and just over five for the trailer and load. "Couldn't tell it was there" he said!!
  2. I used a Disclock on my last Defender - very well made, totally encompasses the steering wheel and a very visual deterent. Downsides were I nearly went through the windscreen with it a few times when fitting/removing and it was a pain to store in the vehicle if you had a passenger.
  3. Hi Darren, yes the General Grabber has changed pattern style due to new European laws regarding off road tyres and whilst it doesnt look as good as the old style, it still got rated very highly in the Land Rover magazines. Doesnt appear BF Goodrich do the all terrain in that size but it might pay to ring the usual suspects - John Craddock, Paddocks and Silverline. Good luck, Derek
  4. The guy I pay to sharpen them better than I can but he obviously didnt with that one!!
  5. Thank you for the replies guys. The chain that was on when the problem was happening had just been professionally sharpened but I took it off and put a brand new chain on and its been working fine today. Thanks everybody:thumbup:
  6. I have a Palax KS35 Ergo and have a problem when cutting fairly large diameter hardwoods. Cutting oak at the moment and if it is over 8 inches in diameter, the chainsaw will cut about half way through and then the chain stops, as if its jamming. If released and then forced it may cut a bit more next time. It will, usually, eventually cut all the way through. Any ideas what may be causing this? I am running 325 chain - would a different size make any difference? The revs on the tractor (its a pto model) are usually set around 1300rpm.
  7. If anybody is in Edinburgh on Saturday night, 28 Jan or Norwich on Sunday 29 Jan, then get yourself along to see The Classic Rock Show. Two and a half hours of entertainment from some very talented musicians featuring tracks from The Eagles, Led Zep, ACDC, Fleetwood Mac, Joe Cocker, Bruce Sprinsteen and many more. Contact the venues direct for tickets, you won't be disappointed. The Classic Rock Show | The Best Classic Rock Music On The Planet! The lad on guitar and vocals with the long blond hair, Howie G, is my nephew - never knew he was so talented until we saw him at The Sage in Newcastle last night. If you cannot get to show, search classic rock show on you tube.
  8. In my previous life I was totally geared towards customer service and I have carried that over in to my firewood business. Ringing people back when they leave you a message; on your voicemail state you expect to be able to return their call within two working hours; I always give them an hour slot as to when I will deliver - eg. between 3 and 4 pm; always be pleasant and polite when you turn up and check where they want the logs offloaded. I dropped of 6 cube for a customer on Friday and gave her a couple of bags of kindling free and she was over the moon as she had just run out the previous night and didnot know how she was going to get the stove lit before the kids came home in half an hour. I see every customer interaction as a chance to sell myself: if they like me and the product they will become repeat customers and advocates,ie they will refer you to friends and families.
  9. The instructions say "Do not boil with the cork in." So its a bit pointless having it anyway.
  10. Isuzu do make an extra cab version they just dont bring it in to the UK; I saw quite a few in Skiathosis last September. At the LAMMA show at Newark yesterday was a new manufacturer - Great Wall!! The salesman asked me what I thought and when I replied it looked like a Chinese copy of the Isuzu Rodeo he said I was more or less right. It has Great Wall (!!! what a name!!!!) engine and six speed gear box, a smart ineterior but not too bling and can tow 2.2 ton. All in price on the road - £13998!! But I'm sure they could've come up with a better name!
  11. Still slow but had my best day ever today with one customer taking 6 cubic metres in one delivery:thumbup:
  12. Not too sure on that. I know when the MOD replaced the Land Rover 101s with these, they needed two Pinzgauers to do the job of one 101 and the drivers need to be specially trained. They are good looking motors though and there is a six wheeler available as well.
  13. One of the Land Rover monthlys has been quick to point out this is purely a concept, not a prototype, its a plastic body on a Range Rover Sport chassis (if I remember correctly) although there must be a new Defender for 2015 due to changes in various laws. In response to earlier posts, no Land Rover probably do not want to make a utility vehicle any more ...as there is no money in it apparently. They make their money with the Range Rovers, Discoverys etc so why bother building a vehicle if its not going to make up a large part of your turnover? And whilst we all love the Defender, who would go and buy a new one? I drove one recently and was amazed at how cramped the cabin and driving position felt. A few years after the Discovery was first launched, a farmer bought one, made it into a truck cab pick up with a fifth wheel in the back for towing a large trailer and I thought if a guy could do that in his shed, why cant Land Rover do it. They should have made utility Discoverys other than the Commercial, ie. pick ups. I bought a Ford Ranger Super cab last year after 20 years of Land Rover ownership, most of it Defender 90s, and feel as though this is what Land Rover should have built years ago. It would probably be so much better with permanent four wheel drive and diff locks but there again if it had been built by Land Rover it would have been a lot more expensive. Don't get me wrong, as I said earlier I have been a Land Rover owner and enthusiast for most of my life, I'm still the latter but lets all realise the age of the Defender as we know and love it has been and gone
  14. Can you please stop putting pictures on of the tracked dumper Steve, we miss it too much!!! It was the best machine my friend had. Dead right with your comments of the seat being too low, you really struggle to see what you are doing to the left when facing backwards, that was nearly always where my log stacking on the back went to pot!! keep using it for what it was designed for.
  15. I had a few phone calls from a ldy before Christmas enquirying about a delivery of logs. She was moving in to a new house and having a stove installed. The last call I had from her, she asked if my logs were smokeless!!!! Whilst I was dying to say, "Yes, as long as you dont burn them!" I suggested she telephoned the company she was spending a lot of money with and ask them if the stove was DEFRA approved. Never heard back from her.
  16. Class!!! My wife was walking past the room and was wondering what I was laughing so loudly at!!!
  17. The shepherd on our shoot has J99 TUP on his pick up:001_smile:
  18. I bought a Palax KS 35 last year and have been very pleased with it. I did a lot of research beforehand and viewed a lot of machines and for the money I am pleased with what I got. I doubt very much if you would get a used Posch for four grand. Give Jim at Caladonian Forestry a ring, he may have some second hand Palax machines in.
  19. Are you guys buying these direct from Amazon.com or one of the other companies that comes up when you click on how many are available?
  20. That looks great mate, well done. I have been thinking about planking some timber that I have got that is too big for the firewood processor. Fortunately, a friend has an Alaskan mill he has lent me so I might give it a go next week (if I can borrow my other friends larger saw!). Did you use a normal chain or a ripping one?
  21. Yeah, I just checked DVLC website the other day and there are still quite a few L xx OGS plates available, including L88 OGS. When I've made my log fortune (ha,ha) I will buy another Defender 90 (had them for 20 years before the Ranger) and put my present plate on (L90 OGS) and buy a restored Series 3 and put L88 OGS on that - the complete Land Rover log delivery fleet!!!
  22. 6pm on Quest (channel 38) is the episode of "Worlds Toughest Tribe" where Ben Anderson tries to become a tree feller in British Columbia. Been on a few times before but worth a watch if you haven't seen it.
  23. Cheers Log Dog, thats the result I was after.
  24. Reaction from customers has been entirely positive and they see it for what it is, a bit of fun and to me it just finishes the truck off nicely.
