  1. Thanks for all the replies. I spoke to my friend earlier tonight and he was starting to have a few concerns as well, main one being the item was listed on ebay and then withdrawn only for the seller to contact my friend and say he could have it for the buy it now price which now I think of it, there was no buy it now price where you would normally see it, it was just mentioned in the text of the description. In my view, this is therefore a transaction outside of ebay which is the classic VPP scam if you google it. We are going to contact him tomorrow and either arrange to see it (although we are in Newcastle and he is in Aberdeen!) or have it shipped down here and we will pay cash on delivery. I must say I was extremely disappointed with the "quality" of service I received from the ebay help desk and once again have benefitted from the power of Arbtalk! Cheers, guys.
  2. It does seem to be more of a US facility. Searching google it would appear most of the scams happen when people have bought outside of ebay, ie on Craigslist, and are then offered ebay VPP. I just wish the operator I spoke to had been UK based and knew what she was talking about! I think paying through Paypal would be safer myself.
  3. A friend and I have purchased a vehicle through ebay. The seller has sent an invoice which states it is involved in the Vehicle Purchase Protection (VPP) program. This provides protection up to £50,000 against certain losses with some types of fraud. The money is paid in to an account managed by ebay inc. and they hold the money until we have received the vehicle, are happy with it and then inform them and they pay the seller. My concerns are there is no mention on the ebay web site of the VPP and the bank account name we have to pay is a foreign name, albeit a Barclays sort code and account number - not ebay holding account as you would expect for one of their representatives accounts. After being on the telephone to ebay "help desk" for 20 minutes I have just been cut off! The lady did not inspire me with confidence as she seemed to know less than I did. Any one used this system before???
  4. Hi Jon, pm sent re lights Cheers mate
  5. I feel in awe of people like you who can take a piece of timber and turn it in to something beautiful like this. You should be really proud.
  6. Got my first sale of firewood through the Arbtalk firewood directory (despite being registered on it since last June) and then the customer recommended me to his father in law wh:thumbup:o I delivered a load to today. And both will probably order further loads in the coming weeks.
  7. Glad you were wearing the correct gear and can live to tell the tale
  8. Ha ha, good one Darren! Thought I had a funny feeling down below this afternoon!! Look after the little chap....the lamb that is!!!
  9. I've just tried this and for some reason its the sharpener they will not post abroad:confused1:
  10. Had a good morning visiting a fellow member of Arbtalk - Darren of DM Taylor Firewood - who kindly took time to show me his set up, saw my first ever live lamb birth whilst there. Then went to the pub this evening with wife and she bought me a lovely rib eye steak!
  11. Driving in the outside lane of the motorway one dark night, I was aware of a Defender coming up fast behind me. I pulled across to the middle lane only to be overtaken by a military Wolf towing a Sankey. He was going so fast it looked as though the trailer tyres were not even touching the ground! I was doing 70ish so he must have been doing 80!
  12. No, no fires in the garden. The tree was pruned and reduced by a tree surgeon about two years ago and it seems to have happened since then.
  13. My mum has this eucalyptus tree in her back garden. Over the last 12 months or so it has developed this split in the trunk and hopefully you can see its not just the bark thats peeled back - its a good inch thick between the bark and the exposed trunk. Any ideas what has caused it and is it a danger???
  14. Hi Brushcutter, thanks for the info. Main task where speed would be important is in moving timber in the yard when chipping day arrives so it would be loading/unloading 3m lengths of softwood, anything from 6 inch to 28 inch diameter. Had a Brunnet forwarder which took a good operator 45 minutes to load and less to unload. The tables sound interesting if you could pm them
  15. Could anybody with a forwarder trailer and crane, ie something like a ten ton Botex or Kesla outfit, tell me how fast they are to load / unload? Are we talking ten minutes, twenty minutes, longer? Would be really useful if you could be as accurate as possible. Many thanks.
  16. What are the tracked units on the low loader Big Bolt? Are they driven off the tractor? Very interesting!!
  17. Forwarder is a Brunnet. My friend bought it in October 2010 for moving logs on his wood chip site and it must have had nearly every hydraulic pipe replaced - it would burst one every time it did a full days work!! This machine actually replaced the tracked dumper and crane the Mr Blair is now the proud owner of. Problem with the Brunnet (other than putting you on first name terms with local hydraulic specialists!!) was the crane operation was very slow to load and unload. The wood is a beautiful place. About 40 acres if I remember correctly and had not been touched for about 40 years.
  18. According to the following website, in ideal conditions (so probably very flat!) the Supacat will tow 2 tonnes SupaCat Specs
  19. Was that repairing the windscreens after pulling the people out Dean:001_smile: The DAF 45 is looking favourite at the moment if we can find a double hydraulic pump to run off the pto outlet to power the crane. Saw a tipper today that had an Edbro single pump installed but would need a double for the Epsilon.
  20. Yeah, like that. Trouble is to buy such a truck you are looking at £15000 plus! We've got an Epsilon crane and just need something to mount it on. Saw some ex army DAF 45s today which look good.
  21. I think there was a 6 cylinder engine in the back but it looked like the head was off. It is at a company called Comvex based in Sunderland. The guy who showed us around was called Jordan Ord and his number is 0191 5160316 or 07866933541. I am sure he would be open to offers. Let me know how you get on:thumbup:
  22. I think the 45p per mile is supposed to cover your fuel, tax, insurance and wear and tear costs if you use the vehicle for business use.
  23. My friend and I had a good day out today looking over the stock in this yard. Went looking for a Bedford TM but decided probably manage with a Leyland DAF - they are at least ten years newer, better condition and parts readily available. Also got a good sized cab with plenty of room behind the seats for storing gear. Could have spent a small fortune!!
  24. I think you will find normal SDP insurance covers you if you travel to one work site per day and do not leave there until home time. If you are driving to different sites or even tipping at different places you may not be covered and will require business insurance. Isn't mileage allowance set by the Inland Revenue at 40p per mile? May be a little higher now as that is what I was able to claim a few years ago in a different job I had.
