  1. I bought an 07 Super Cab in June after 20 years of Land Rover ownership and love the room it offers inside, very handy having the space behind the seat for coats, bait bag, etc and the occassional passenger plus having that smaller door open is a big bonus - the HiLux and Mitsubishi extra cabs dont have this facility. You should find it very comfortable to drive, cruises very well on the motorway and mine returns around 30mpg. So far done 6000 miles without a problem (fingers crossed!!). I too did not have a tow bar but bought one from a company on ebay - got a Witter tow bar for £110 and a Dixon bate ball and pin for £40 as opposed to the £360 plus VAT a local company quoted. If you want the companies details let me know and I will dig them out. Only downsides compared to Land Rovers I have run is that the Ranger is not permanent 4WD which is good for mpg but you can tell on wet, slippy services and the gearing is higher - I find reversing with foot fully off the clutch far too fast!! But on the whole I thinkyou will enjoy it, I dont why more people dont go for the Super Cab as I dont think I've ever seen anybody in the back of a double cab! Good luck:thumbup:
  2. Makes the Unimog look small Steve! Great combo there.
  3. I have a Truckman canopy on the back of my pick up and the handle on the top tailgate has gone kaput today!! It normally turned through 90 degrees to open/close but now when it turns, the bolts don't come out of the side to engage in the canopy. Hopefully just something come loose. Anybody had this happen before? How much of the tailgate to you have to take to bits to rectify? Any ideas gratefully received.
  4. Perfect timing! I have just borrowed an Alaskan off a friend to try planking some oak, ash and beech that is too big to go through the firewood processor. I have only got a Stilh MS260 with 15 inch bar - would you recommed a bigger saw or would a bigger bar (logs are 14 inch plus diameter) with a ripping chain be okay? Cheers
  5. Yes, I just got one ten minutes ago. Commercial offer and to ring for prices. Will be going in the trash folder!
  6. I have 18 month seasoned ash, beech, oak and sycamore available with moisture content in mid twenties. I cut logs to 10 inch length and deliver in and around Newcastle (as long as thats Upon Tyne!). I will pm my contact details.
  7. I was thinking something similar but rather than give it to Steve for his personal enjoyment, put it in the Christmas raffle.
  8. The benefits of Arbtalk are priceless!! Somewhere to ask a question, share information, make new contacts, inspire each other and its all done without any bad language unlike some other forums I have been on. Well done to Steve and his crew:thumbup:
  9. How many of you will be rushing out and buying one of these? Apparently its the most complicated Lego kit ever, has over 2400 pieces and 5 instruction manuals. Mercedes-Benz and LEGO Partner to Celebrate Unimog | eMercedesBenz The winch and the crane are fully operational, or should be if you've followed the instructions correctly!
  10. Hi Woodpicker, its a Super Cab.
  11. I charge £75 for all hardwood as per the picture. I feel you should always tell people the volume as vehicles vary in size. I have measured mine and it is one cubic metre which equates to approx 350 logs (I counted them in!). Some people have said £75 is too much but they usually follow that with..."mind the last lot I got for £50 was wet!" and some have said its too cheap!! Basically after doing a heck of a lot of research on the net I would charge whatever you feel you can get...prices range from £40 to £130 for seemingly the same quantity!!
  12. Apparently, an 18 year old lad has just been quoted the highest ever car insurance premium - £83600 if he paid it in one go or £91625 if it was in instalments!! And all for a Fiat Punto he paid £350 for!!!**!! Aviva have stated there was a glitch in their system and the figures should never have been quoted!!
  13. Have a look at this Ford F350 - looks a mighty impressive truck!!!! Commercial Vehicle Sales | Cars Vans Trailers Rigids Tractor Units | Roy Humphrey
  14. Don't shoot me down in flames on this one but a friend in the know told me recently if all the biomass power stations that are planned were actually built, the UK demand for timber would be 58million tons per year. Current output is 9 million tons per year so where is the extra going to come from and how green does that make biomass?
  15. 2007 Ford Ranger Super Cab - very comfortable and car like to drive, low 30s mpg, very useful having the extra cab space and in 6000 miles in the last 6 months hasnt put a foot wrong (touch wood). Friend of mine has had double cab for three years and not required any work and all the gamekeepers he knows are ditching their Land Rovers for Rangers.
  16. Glad to see you've put it to use already Steve. Saw this and thought it might make a good, larger version! M548 tracked cargo carrier // BAE system EX.MOD & USED NATO MILITARY
  17. Just read an article from the Daily Telegraph of 15 October regarding the popularity of stoves and what people are burning. Apparantly, a wood burner manufacturer commssioned a study as to what people are burning in their stoves. Some are lighting their fires with petrol or diesel! But it gets worse - when it comes to burning fuel people admitted to burning dirty nappies, old clothing and shoes, railway sleepers, one dealer had a customer who was a poultry farmer and put chicken carcases on the fire and another knew of someone who used dead lambs!!! In the survey, it appeared more than half the users questioned were totally unaware of the correct wood to use and more than a quarter thought all wood was the same.
  18. As promised, here are some pics of the dumper while my friend owned it. I must say it looks like it has had quite a comprehensive make over. In the hundreds of hours of work it was put to, it never got stuck once Steve (not unless you count the time I got it wedged between two log stacks but thats another story!!) All three of us who used it on a regular basis still miss it. It was replaced by a Brunnet forwarder which also has recently been sold! Ian is now on the look out for a 6x4 or 6x6 truck for moving the 12 foot long logs around the site. Ex military stuff would be ideal but prices are daft - £12000 starting price for vehicles from the early 1980s!
  19. I'll dig them out over the next few days.
  20. That dumper belonged to a very good friend of mine and it was great fun to use, never got stuck. He actually mounted the crane on it and everybody who saw it could not believe it had not been done before. He sold it about August 2010 and the new owner has obviously done a lot of work on it. I've got some before photos if you are interested Steve.
  21. I have a 2007 Ranger Super Cab and the back holds 1 cubic metre of 10 inch logs. When I was searching for a vehicle I looked at the e-brochures from the manufacturers web sites to obtain the bed dimensions and then you can work out the cubic capacity. I love the super cab configuration as you can load the buck up and still have room in the cab for coats, tools and more importantly, kelly kettle and bait bag:thumbup:
  22. If anybody is interested in a Gransfors Bruks small forest axe have a look at The Small Forest Axe - Knives Tools Up until 31 December 2011, when you enter the promo code LRO811 at the checkout you receive a 20% discount! This reduces the price from £55.95 to £44 plus £4.95 post and packing (this stays the same no matter how many you order). They do only stock the small forest axe.
  23. I recently dug my kelly kettle out and took it when I was using my firewood processor. My two pals working with me laughed out load when they came in the shed and saw me setting it away but now the first question they ask when I pull up is "Have you got the Kelly Kettle?" I've always used a flask that keeps the water hot all day but tea still tastes better made with just boiled water out of the kelly! Any recommendations for a food flask, somewhere between 0.5 and 1 litre?
  24. I've just got the Clas Ohlson catalogue, they are a Swedish home store and was surprised to see the do the Fiskar range of axes and have a store in Cardiff or check out Clas Ohlson
  25. I would also look at the Palax range of processors. I opted for one after viewing a BGU and Hakki Pilke and Jim at Caledonian Forestry is a sound guy to deal with:thumbup1:
