  1. worth splitting a few and measuring in the middle. I found 20% was good 25% a bit poor and needs a bit longer.
  2. I have bought them on ebay for £400-£600 different designs some work better than others. I would avoid the miniveyor builders rubble type stuff as its a bit slow and clogs up if you get some steam up. If you pay £200 for a less than suitable conveyor and get a year or two out of it you have had your moneys worth it saves your back and makes the job. 4metres is a bit short and 6 metres too long unless you are trying to make a huge stack.
  3. I have read most of the posts but dont always understand peoples individual location problems. When I did logs a couple of years ago I worked out the following. 1. I need to do 1000 tonnes to earn a living not 300 and make sure I can sell them in a mild winter. 2. I need a 2-3 tonne telehandler with quick release log grab and a pallet rotator. 3. buy a new very large binderberg processor that takes large cord or if your wood is twisty buy a Dallen 4.buy a bandsaw and make your own 3cu metre crates that can be rotated and dry logs in them you will need to make 500 5. Dont bother if everyone is fighting their logs out in your area at £60 a cu metre.
  4. I prefer the idea of brakes in the axle with plenty of oil round them. I would think brakes on merlos seized up due to lack of use and the poor enviroment they work in. But I would imagine if well maintained they are cheaper when it comes to replacement time.
  5. I like the jcb 527- 67 big enough but still small enough with 4 wheel steering and drive. looked at a 54 plate 627 manitou a few months ago but needed £3000 spent on ball joints and bushes on arm not keen on the high revving hydrostatic set up seems like alot of noise for not much speed.
  6. Our last two discoveries did this had the aircon on to counteract the heat from the transmission tunnel and defective heater. Not sure if all vehicles use flaps or some have may still use a motorised valve but something may be just out of adjustment.
  7. I have been looking to change our 525 for years and have decided on 527-67 or similar maybe 530 if its not too large. I have heard alot more moans about Manitous than jcb. Not got a problem with the red ones might even end up with one. Less electronics will be better for us piano keys rather than plastic joysticks.
  8. I have a 10 year old hunter which I think is average. But I bought a hamlet made by arda in dorset I think. Fitted it in our falling down office and wished I had fitted it in the house cracking stove really efficent, well made and designed and easy to control only 5kw but chucks out the heat.
  9. We have top quality kindling made from new pine joinery off cuts. about 800 bags surplus to orders at the moment. We have enough timber to last at least a year. We can produce kindling all through the winter bone dry at less than 14% moisture content. Bags are 40x50 and weigh approx 4kg monofilament orange see through bag. For more pictures we have a listing in the firewood directory on here. Thankyou to everyone who purchased this summer hopefully it will be a good winter for all
  10. I think the problem with arb waste is you look at a big pile of wood and think £150 a tipper load. Two of you spend all morning grunting it about and decide you either need 30k in toys to do it efficiently or buy in cord for your knackered processor. I did contemplate pressure washing a load of pop for kindling that had been dragged through a muddy river. But decided not to bother or store it a year and wait for the bark to fall off.
  11. When we did big rings we covered our processor deck with timber or ply and then loaded a few tonne on it with the bobcat. Pulled the rings to the vertical splitter with hookeroons. One man can do it on his own without breaking back lifting off floor. I have a pic somewhere but not on this pc if it helps.
  12. Normally about £60 we now charge £10 for the labour the film and the pallet. Check what they do if it falls apart on route. Firewood or kindling is a pain to secure.
  13. At least they had the sense not to steal a Land rover for the job
  14. I was looking after a fleet of diesel jetting machines in 1990. Harben century 10,000 psi at 10 gallons a minute. I was called to an accident on the flight deck of HMS Ark Royal. A young lad had cut his arm off and it was presumed lost arm in sea. Luckily I found it behind the wheels of the trailer. He had used insulating tape to lock the trigger on and then passed out in the sun. Unfortunately the water jet does so much damage you cant sew the limb back on.
  15. Probably yes, more over paid civil servants, I bet alot of their success comes from tip offs and gossip in corner shops.
  16. I thought the opening post was going to be a joke I even read it twice to find the punch line.
  17. Hopefully this wont upset anyone could not resist this. The rude word is bleeped out if mods dont approve please remove but it made me laugh. If the link does not work its on u tube and its called bury my gold fish.
  18. I would say He got his experience because he bothered his butt to get his tickets. He got his position because of his experience and the tickets helped.
  19. 8 inch wood screams out for an old hakki pilki 2x about £3000 second hand. But you cant really justify that sort of money for 20 tonnes a year but it will last along time.
  20. We tried this about 5 years ago but found billets never fall the right way in a processor. We worked out if we were to carry on we would mount one of those screw splitters on a bobcat or minidigger. the other idea was mount a log splitter face down on a bobcat dice the timber and leave stood on end and chase it about until its small enough to lift on to a vertical splitter.
  21. A well designed cutting edge on an 8 tonne machine can be as good as a badly engineered 13 tonne. We have a 3 phase sheppach 9 tonne which has been fitted with an 11hp honda. I like the 2 speed pump and the adjustable stops. The auto return is good
  22. meat and veg from an independant may cost 10% more but it taste 100% better.
  23. I have both and lost both twice last year for 3 weeks at a time. You need a claim form from Bt chased them about ten times. You will never see a form as then they dont need to pay out. Bt complete joke compensation is 50p a day. Save yourself some stress and get a dongle on 3G for a couple of weeks. If you are with Bt you are the last to be connected because they treat their own customers like dirt as there is no penalty clause like there is with Sky or Talk Talk. Hope you get it sorted soon.
  24. Expensive place to shop. Staff normally have a serious bad attitude you find a pile of them in a corner having a power meeting and ask for help they look at you like dirt. Always long queues at least 4 deep at ours. Offers always sold out. I do 2000 miles a week you wont find their fuel any where near my vehicles no matter how cheap. Aldi twice the quality and half the price. I hate Tesco with a passion.
  25. Why does it always seem to be us old boys who go through the chipper or get crushed by the tractor. Perhaps the younger generation are better at risk assesment.
