  1. I used to get twinges in my back, didn't stop me working until once it did, 2days off work. Yoga didn’t help much 13 months ago I started at the gym, 2-3 times a week, concentrating on the core (+an all round workout) for 13 months I haven’t had even a twinge i believe tree work overworks some muscles, under works others, we’re not as tough as we think we are
  2. They're generally shorter, more compact machines, requiring less weight to tipp them forward, where as avant style loaders are longer, normally with the engine and weight over the rear wheels. Its the Tipping weight which is the important number to look at, the "lifting capacity" is normally what the lifting arm will lift, at the attachment mounting plate, with the machine chained to the ground. Tipping weight is how much the machine will lift before tipping forward (not chained to the ground!)
  3. 11:25 last night, nights are drawing in now!
  4. Well I’d be changing the spec for a start! Tell the customer you’re not moving rings into the garage, that’s pointless, tell the customer they’ll go mouldy due to poor air flow, much better for them to be (conveniently) left where they land/are cut up, they’ll dry better there. No way I’d be spreading chip around flowerbeds, they can have the chip in a couple of piles in the vicinity of the drop zone convenient to us. Makes better mulch if left in a pile. 2man a day, 1comes back to grind the next morning. jobs “worth” a fair bit, easily enough to comfortably accommodate a 3rd person day one, BUT the 3rd guy will actually only cost 0.5 days as the grinding can be done whilst cutting the stem/last bit of cleaning/when there’s nothing to do as the anti 3rd person guys keep mentioning. So 3 man days, plus machinery costs (grinder, set of teeth, chipper) add 0,5 - 1 extra man days for extra profit/pain in the arse tax. Plus as mike said, you’ve got a day job so don’t try to be cheap Out of curiosity, why'd they want the stump out?
  5. Dont use wood that’s too hard, it’s technique that makes the axe stick not power. spruce is fine ime. My target at home is a good 40cm thick spruce ring, holding up well (pictures a few months old now)
  6. I get where your coming from Vesp, a driver with a hgv licence, driving a downplated truck, only the paperwork is different, but if it'd been kept a hgv, it'd be inspected more often for a start. Pretty sure lewis hamilton would still get done for speeding/wreckless driving/murder if he hit a child in a 30 zone doing 80 in his ferrari. Its still speeding/breaking the law even though the driver and car are capable of those speeds. True, 80 in a 30 is fecking stupid, but so is driving around 2-3t overloaded Theres a guy on instagram with a 4x4 iveco daily, downplated from 5,5t, pretty sure i read unladen it was 3,3t! yet carries 10m3 chip ?
  7. Horrible accident, hope the guy has a decent recovery/quality of life I get where you're coming from Matty, and the vermeer grinders (That I've used anyway) stop the wheel when you let go of the controls, that's really good, yet my bandit, you can leave it spinning full revs, and walk away from the machine . . .or go infront and dig out grindings ? quite supprised there's no dead mans handle type thing to be honest
  8. Another vote for the 530 varitrac if you’re after a small tracked chipper. About 1250kg. They are about with the folding hopper too tp do an even smaller, lighter machine but never seen one let alone used one
  9. I'd recommend a 10 week course, like this at Merrist Wood https://www.merristwood.ac.uk/CourseInformation/ShortCourseDetails.aspx/727000325205844/Arboriculture & Forestry There are similar up north, but i haven't a clue on the colleges im afraid, once you find a college, ask them if you're legible for funding.
  10. First thought is if you have a pedestrian grinder for tight access, a ZT might not be suitable. The ZT is, or might be as narrow as the HB, but its long too. 2.7m if i remember correctly. The length might make tight access turns awkward? Ive no idea what you're "tight access" look like, but narrow and sharp turn will be tricky with the ZT A pedestrian style wheeled machine will also be kinder on lawns when positioning in small gardens. Tracks do scrub up grass. Didn't Jo-beau come out with a pedestrian grinder with hydraulic powered swing? best of both worlds?
  11. Removing them asap defiantly won't be a bad thing
  12. Are the 25” Stihl compatible bars the black ones or the light(?) ones as in the picture above?
  13. Hi Rob! The Cannon light bar, 14" for a 201T, £73+vat.......Gulp! Is that right? Edit: Just looked through the rest of the bars, what makes them worthy or the premium price over say the Sugihara ones?
  14. Nothing to do with me.
  15. Neighbor has some large ash trees, the ones that stand alone in the lawn are affected by these small green caterpillars each year, there’s thousands of them and strip the trees bare of leaves each year, the trees then flush again. no other trees in the area are affected, there’s maples and apple trees they don’t touch, and the ash trees that have lilac bushes around the base are not affected, only ash trees growing in the lawn. i know the name of the caterpillars verbally in Swedish, but not the correct spelling so can’t find the Latin. my suggestion has been to build a chicken enclosure around the trees as the caterpillars are constantly falling down and climbing up again. . But better solutions are appreciated.
  16. Skyland are top notch!
  17. Me neither. I too have a decent array of kit and an excess of saws, kit and saws are fun to buy, paying excess money to someone who doesn’t deserve it isn’t fun. I resent paying a shit climber £100 a day, yet have no problem paying my regular 2 who not only are decent climbers but good workers an people that don’t piss me off each day the equivalent of 450. someone will only pay you what you’re worth to them. Europe’s different to the UK, different types of contracts, different tax rates, different turnovers, different expectations. paying 450+ in parts of Europe is probably like paying 180+in the UK
  18. Picture a colleague took of me, like Pete, I find it hard to take whole body selfies by myself
  19. Consumable/warranty part or not, the running hours should be irrelevant on a warranty measured in years? A saws warranty is (for example) 2 years. Whereas a car warranty is 3 years OR 100000miles
  20. Awesome! A photocomp is long overdue! Heres a few recent ones
  21. SV Tech are known for uprating vehicles. Even Toyota (Here in Sweden) will update the towing rate of the older style hilux from 2800kg to 3500kg. paper exercise and uprated rear springs.
  22. If it makes you feel any better, i was born....just ?
  23. I don't think so, i was in Cambridge working for a cambridge firm, might be mistaken, but sure the guys said it was in Saxmundham, at the church next to the big hill, which was only a few miles from where i grew up, hence remembering it.
  24. Nice work mick! I absolutely love the ladders, reminds me of a classic photo of one of the guys i used to work with, 3 sets of ladders strapped up a big cedar in Suffolk in the 80's. Easier than body thrusting on 3 strand! Was the rot caused by the removal of those big limbs in the past do you think?
