  1. Dan, that would be great mate
  2. brilliant stuff..thanks fella's...never underestimate the power of Arbtalk!
  3. thats funny. I've had problems starting my 395XP and my 357XP when using the Stihl red mix. I only use bio/low smoke 2 stroke now. Also, I used to use other people fuel when freelancing and ended up seizing up a 357XP due to a bad mix. Stihl saws are a bit less fussy on the mix, but Husky's can indeed be a problem. My MS201T runs on anything...except Aspen...yet my MS200T loves the stuff!
  4. optimum timing for pruning?...just after you've sharpened your saw....
  5. great project...if you have his Army number it would help a lot. good luck!
  6. they look very similar to mine Dan...will have a measure up tommorow. I hate those low-profile Ifor wheels and tyres on the new trailers...they don't like kerbs and tree stumps much do they?!
  7. thanks guys...getting the PCD tommorow from my fitter
  8. the contractors doing our local Council contract are turning out some of the best street-tree pruning I've seen in 19 years. Its a shame to see some other LA's just pollarding the living daylights out of everything with a leaf on it to fit into their cropped budgets...standards drop with the price I guess
  9. I bought a 12x6 trailer a couple of years ago. Its a heavy old thing and I thought it was an early Ifor Williams - turns out its not. Its a proper heavy duty thing and has the old chunky type wheels and tyres. It did not come with a spare and I have been looking for one ever since. It has 6 x 9 tyres on split rim, 5 stud wheels...anyone got any idea where I might be able to source one?
  10. again, blame the LA....they should check whether contractors are capable of doing the job to standard. This was probably the cheapest quote...as usual:thumbdown:
  11. agreed Rich, I've worked with blokes who've used saws for years and are hopeless at sharpening....bad angling, wrong files, and the big one - unequal cutter lengths...makes you wonder how some of them get a days work done
  12. I do quite a bit of work for the local Wildlife Trust. We never have problems with nests...we leave fell's or work round them with reductions etc. That said, this year they've decided to stop cutting between april - october...thats going to be a pain...
  13. [ame]http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bridgedale-Everyday-Outdoors-Coolmax-Liner/dp/B006HY4YBY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364147390&sr=8-1[/ame] I wear these with Army issue socks...I wear Meindl boots and haven't noticed them being any colder or warmer than other chainsaw boots.
  14. thats handy, you could always lower yourself out if your unconscious too!
  15. good call mate. when its this cold and you don't feel 100% its SO easy to make a mistake...best off coming back fresh
  16. hmmm, interesting thread!...I've got my city and guilds in Arb (distinction). My original plan was to go on and get an HNC. I quickly realised it would do me personally, no good at all, being qualified past craft level. If I had an HNC I wouldn't want to be pushing a broom and rake at the end of each day When I worked as a freelancer, I was rarely asked for any tickets or quals and no customer has ever asked in 19 years. At the end of the day, what is a good climber?...someone who is good at pruning/rigging/felling?....or someone who is so quick, he can earn you a days money by lunchtime?...people have different ideas of what a 'good job' is...I see some excellent treework locally...and some diabolical attempts...its all about pride in the job and/or pound notes depending on what your outlook is!
  17. I use freehand between my knees when I have to..but if I use a roller guide (and put my glasses on!) and get the saw in a vice...it cuts like a new chain.
  18. I know some climbers with every ticket going...and their crown reductions look like they've been done with plastic explosive!...I think the thing to remember is, a CS unit (or what ever they call them these days), is only a level of competence...its not a level of proficiency. It really grips me when other firms are doing contract work and I know they don't hold the relevant tickets..would their insurers pay out if there was an accident?. Its up to whoever awards the contracts to check their contractors are actually qualified to do their job...many just don't know or don't bother...budget comes first
  19. I advertised with YP and Yell.com last year. Had a very, very poor response from the pages...and a few jobs from yell that I could have done without!..not the sort of work I want to be doing...and pricing up against cheap, unqualified companies....giving it a wide berth this year!
  20. anything other than BFG MT's is second best!...I paid £150 a pop for mine and they are worth every penny
  21. well we didn't think the British Army would be treading water at Dunkirk in 1940 did we?...who knows....deterence is better than fighting for your very existence...lets all hope and pray we never find ourselves in such a dire position as we were back in those dark days.
  22. saw a lad trip over a rabbit fence on a training course and land on the saw he was about to refill...funny thing was...he put the old rabbit fence on the risk assessment!. The nastiest cut I've ever seen from a non-running saw...
  23. can't stand it...makes me cringe!
  24. “The most puzzling development in politics during the last decade is the apparent determination of Western European leaders to re-create the Soviet Union in Western Europe.” ― Mikhail Gorbachev
  25. agreed Gentlemen...UKIP or EUSSR!
