  1. 'Courtesy of George Stephane Fraser. This photo shows Tony Mead, Signal Platoon, 9th Parachute Battalion at Pegasus Bridge in 1951. On D-Day, he landed in a tree, and a branch penetrated his abdomen. Incredibly, he still managed to get to the RV and take part in the assault on the Merville Gun Battery.' how nails was this fella?..for those of you not familiar with this action; Battle of Merville Gun Battery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia 'They are in fact, men apart - every man an Emperor!'

  3. I think all of our lives changed on that day. I remember seeing it on the customers TV and thinking...theres going to be a war...I need to get home to my family....12 years later we are still fighting it....and I've got a horrible we'll be fighting it in another 12 years....
  4. no mate, I didn't do the LA fitness job. The tree wasn't TPO'd..but that wouldn't make any difference around here...nobody every gets pulled up by LA tree officers for bad pruning. As has been said, I've seen much worse pruning. I just find it mildly amusing. Lets face if fella's THIS is the way to make money out of tree work...I could smash half a dozen of these out a day...but alas, its just not my style
  5. ha ha!...your spot on there matey!
  6. loads more light..until next june...when we go and do the crown thin!...its in Southend, Essex mate. What grips me is, I could do this in 20 mins flat....maybe its me thats wrong eh!?...ah well.
  7. right fella's...am I the only one that takes perverse satisfaction when I price up a job...don't get it...and drive by a week later and see a butchered tree? The spec for this Oak was going to be a 20% crown reduction and 10% thin...they elected for the £100 cheaper option...'cut the top off and watch it get so thick it'll need thinning next summer' pay peanuts = get monkeys
  8. planted this Hornbeam 17 1/2 years ago, 2 days before my twin Sons were born...they are both strapping lads now
  9. someone on arbtalk..who shall remain nameless...was getting logwood stolen on a regular basis. He drilled out a bit of wood...filled it with gunpowder from a firework and plugged it back up again. The theft stopped. Carlsberg don't do firewood insurance...but if they did.....
  10. ran a CS30 years ago and had a very large lady as a candidate..she turned up on day one and we couldnt get a pair of chainsaw trousers to fit over her ample thighs. I suggested she visit a local supplier and buy two sets of chaps and zip them together. She didn't turn up for day two....oops...
  11. agreed. you can guestimate the weight and dynamics of pieces of wood...but we all know when were 'pushing it'. Common sense, big ropes and smaller pieces work every time...well, most of the time....
  12. just kidnap him, take off his boots, pull his socks till they are half way off, then pop his feet in the feed rollers of the chipper and whip his socks off. Seems fair to me (can I come and watch?)
  13. I've got a method statement, however, I need to add a section for crane-removal, anybody got something I can edit and bolt on chaps?
  14. how about undoing your oil cap and giving his barnet a bit of a grease-up!
  15. I joined the APF for a year...then the AA for a year...I found no benefit at all in being a member of either, so I joined the NAA (National Arb Assoc). This was an organisation from the USA (now known as the TCIA-tree care industry assoc). I got huge amounts of help in setting up the business and trade related stuff. I also did a home study course with them, which was excellent. I used a lot of their training stuff and videos to train my crew and it really made a difference to our work efficiency. There were also regular workshops and visits to places like Kew. Sadly, this seems to have fizzled out, its a shame there's nothing of the same standard in the UK. We could have learned a lot from the Yanks in this department, but seem to have well and truly missed the boat.....
  16. ah right, thanks mate
  17. there was a climber around this parts that was getting it on with his groundies missus...he was nails and her dad was a former pro-boxer. He doesn't live in these parts anymore....

  22. They feel a lot better than they do when they phone me up and tell me the Glyphosate hasn't worked. I used Amcide for 15 years, never a problem. I haven't had any comebacks since I started using SBK...horrible stuff.
  23. torrential...never seen the likes of it here in Southend, Essex....I can't believe how many mugs try and drive cars through deep floodwater!
