  1. 87 what a storm force 12 inland barometer dropped to 927. lowest i have seen and not seen since. was clearing major A road for council on night of storms clearing 70ft beech trees as we cleared so more fell down in end baled out as to dangerous to work. worked for 4 weeks for council clearing trees paid for 3 new saws plus a good wedge in bank. once in a lifetime storm of 91 was strong but not on the scale of 87 so many trees lost. but majority of beech should have been felled as at end of life. and a number of people killed by fallen trees winchester was blocked for over a day for trees to be cleared from roads. also bad floods in lymington lifeboat station was under water had to deflate to get it out of station they went half way up high street taken people from bottom of town. took over six months to get things back to normal. once seen do not want to see a storm of this force again very scary. :scared:made a noise like a jet aircraft flying low.
  2. if it was a proper tender then it has to be in sealed envelopes. and are opened on the night of the meeting and discussed. you can under the local goverment act ask for the tender prices. will not show what firm quoted what but you will se your price againts others. may not have been the chepest price but there known do a good job so parish like using them if price is ok. i tendered for a job lost to a bigger firm waited as i knew it would they forgot the parish this year to cut grass went out back to tender. i got the job as they let them down. i know i am dearer but getting a better job.
  3. makes you mad not theres so lets wreck it for someone else. hope they do get nabbed and you can claim compensation for your loss. plenty in the pot. even if they do not fork out for it all.
  4. i put my hands up got new chain for saw how i do not know was on backwards loaned it to coppicer friend has he had some big oak to clear said to me put chain on backwards first time i have done it :blushing:
  5. +1 as other posts. half day at most. if you can reach without leaning then a normal trimmer is good but you just do it by eye bit at a time step back take a look and carry on. put a tarp under hedge so clippings fall on that grab it up and can take clippings away no mess no blower. simples
  6. as other post 5 years if yours has lapsed and you do spray and it goes up your insurance company may try and wiggle out if your not qualified to use it refresher is only a days course for both parts just checking you still know how to do it money for old rope but has to be done think its £150 for refresher but do not quote me
  7. its the one they make bessom brooms from. it grows on scrubland so is cleared to allow other plants to grow. but talking to wildlife groups not heard of it. going to the hands on coppice day tommorow so will find out more. in my ignorance i thought they used silver birch. how wrong you can be and learn more every day i should think its the second one maybe. will find out
  8. as other posts its a grey import so not covered under uk warrenty. so if it goes wrong dealer well within there rights to charge you for fixing it. for the cost i doubt there is much in it may save a few quid but could cost you a lot more in the long run. what if it gets damaged in transit then what do you do have to send it back to have it replaced so without a saw for months. as other post not worth it. not as if its is a a special that only the states have. see what one of the arb firms who advertise on this site can do you one for. bet its nearly the same may be cheaper.
  9. used to carry 100cwt sacks of cement now 25kg put two up on shoulder the other day. heard of the old boys carrying 200cwt sacks f grain on back. think i be on ground if i tried it even when young
  10. i would not burn it. open fire downwindas other posts but not indoors my veiws also will not burn yew indoors father in law would not and carried it on.
  11. can any one give me any more information on red birch. did not know of it until talking to a coppicer who said use red birch for making broom heads. does it have a Latin name and were is the best place to look for it. want to get a copse with it in to make brooms.
  12. well it looks like i am one of the oldest at 60 nearly 59and 3/4 not that fit but can do most things and can give some young ones a run for there money
  13. have had hondas for nearly 7 years. have the latest umk435uc and hardly any vibes will do what it says it can YES its not as powerfull as the larger sthils or huskys but its 38cc engine. and being 4 stroke has the grunt will cut anything i want it to cut with 3mm string bramble3s grass, you name it will try saplings but pushing it a bit. also the bump feed on them are brill double cord up wind same way put them in slots in lid push back on to casing and away 30 second job to refill unlike the others a fiddle. i can go for a good hour on a fill and depending on job cord will last a morning without changing. at mo as so dry and warm going throught it quicker. looked at getting a bigger machine but why the hondas does the job and half the price plus it has i believe 3 year warrenty on it. also no mixing. what can i say mine is allways available for having a go with have plenty of jobs to try it on before you decide if local. i use a husky pro harness with mine honda harness is good but husky is poles apart. do not know i have the strimmer on.
  14. sorry to hear this brings back memories of my uncle not nice. will not say do this or that you know what you should be doing. may be worth getting it checked maybe you may need to upp your doses be it tablets or injection. take care
  15. +1 used saws without brakes may moons ago would not want to use one now without one. be on edge using it
  16. warrick trailers alresford hampshire say what you want and they will make it if not a stock item well made see plenty in use in hampshire
  17. been post on this and there hollow ground so ideal find a local sharpener to sharpen them on his hollow girinder. not dear to have done and will be top notch when done. if you use a grinder or wetsstone you will flatten face and will not cut as well. its making me think i need a hollow grinder could be a busy bee sharpening blades
  18. done no discharge and its radioactive is a good thing. if we were to discharge anything like this EA would be on your backs and taking you to court
  19. hi looking for some rope for a river job if anyone has got some localish that can not be used for climbing be interested in doing a deal. only needed as a rope to put a spill boom on in case of thank you
  20. good but pricey for what they are. and trust they have fixed there wheels and drive systems
  21. toro do a very good one 3 in one side mulch or bag. and solid built. worth a look built for comercial market
  22. English civil war on the royalist side had my own falconette cannon. good fun when young and single.
  23. +1 mulchers are usless on long grass need a side discharge with mower to cut it so it drys then try and mulch it or collect. i have a toro ride on and as per post it struggles if grass is getting long and is damp hence i keep all the contracts i do short so it easy to cut. but when the dews on grass they do not work as they should leave bits of grass about. need a mower with a large discharge to collector unit after strimming it down. and go over it a few times Hondas discharge is small on the walk behinds look for a old school mountfield or a hayter.
  24. if you want to stop any critter bitting you that flys, get some sash cord old style get some salt peter from chemist soak sash cord for 24hrs hang out to dry then cut it into lenghts and set light to it will burn for hours and smell a bit like rotten cabbage will not come near. used it with muzzels loaders to fire match lock. and never had any critters bothering me
  25. some of the old engines had a inspection plate which you can take off to see points to adjust and clean without taken flywheel off. nail file is ideal for this job used it on the old moggie cars to clean points. plus check gap on points. trying to think believe they should be 15thou gap but do not quote me long time since i worked on one.
