  1. i don't own a mobile so have to do it the old fashioned way and break off a branch.
  2. they were taken with a flash. the oak is a bit reflective because it's 30 years old and rock hard and can be sanded to a nice finish quite easily. both pairs were given one coat of danish oil and quickly buffed but that's it.
  3. as someone who has memory troubles i suggest you just keep looking at the books as much as possible. 25 years of epilepsy drugs have made my memory really crap but i've found if i keep going over some of the less common species i tend to remember them that bit easier. also once i've found an unusual species i like to go back and look at it just to keep it fresh in my memory if i can.
  4. with the slow speed grinder what is the best speed to have at the tool tip?
  5. here are the blanks i cut for them. they were a bit of a nightmare to turn as really old timber (especially oak) is like stone... .
  6. ok, i finally got round to finishing the second pair that i made from an old bit of oak that had been air dried as part of a porch for thirty years. the little pair are within 12 grams of each other and the heavy one weighs 1.137kg and the big pair are only 30 grams (that's 1 ounce) apart and the heavy one weighs 8lb 5.5oz. the tall ones are 24". what do you think tom??? .
  7. pole lathe is not the way to go here. see if you can find a cheap lathe on ebay with a handful of chisels. you only need a benchtop one if the longest you have to turn is only 18".
  8. i might be interested in that. how many trunks are there?
  9. my thoughts too. any chance we can see some endgrain of the larger branches?
  10. agreed, looks stunning when in flower, i just don't want it to get put through the chipper if it's a future job.
  11. i think it's the robert sorby 445 fingernail profiler.
  12. hey mick, i have what may be a complete grinding jig that came with a grinder i bought. you interested in that? will check to see who's make it is but i'm sure it was one of the good ones. i sharpen freehand so won't use it.
  13. if it's coming down i'd be interested in the wood.
  14. it won't be milled by me jon, i would try to split it into decent sizes for either bowl or vase blanks. as it's been sitting around for a while there should be some nice grain colouring inside it.
  15. i'd give him £100 but no more.
  16. it's not... it says "prix"
  17. of course you can mate... let me know if you seriously want it. be good to see it go to a good home.
  18. there's one in the book called italian maple, could that be it??? acer opalus.
  19. they can't arrest you for being a bellend mate. if they could i'd have been in and out of prison most of my life. what's he been charged with?
  20. by the title i thought you were going to burn some scouts:lol::lol:
  21. i get mine from loads of eggs and meat, but admittedly i am not a climber. how much extra protein does the body need?
  22. exactly, how many times have they made this prediction either way and it's been exactly the opposite... i'll judge what the weather is going to be like by opening the front door...
  23. sequoia makes excellent cladding fencing or lumber for outdoor furniture...
  24. agreed the first is a snakebark and i think it's acer capillipes. the second looks like one of the rowans, possibly sorbus aucuparia
