    yes looking at them they are not as bad as i first thought a good hole or two will do them good but i still wanted to find you as much info in them as i could.

    liquidambar. not sure if young liquidambar styraciflua has smooth bark and it roughens with age??? i had a liquidambar with dead smooth bark and it turned out to be liquidambar formosana.

    fair enough then, you'd need some arms to put a 24" drill through a bit of wood though. i think they are meant to go with a tbar handle of some sort as there is a flat ground into the side of the shaft.

    treequip, these are not designed for use in a brace and bit drill as they are straight shafted to fit into a jacobs chuck. lasurus, i am a bit of a tool junkie and you never know when these sorts of things will come in handy. spiral, that's a great tip about using the diet variety. i'll stick a close up of them some time tonight. one of them has dominion on the shaft but other than that they appear blank. the construction of each drill is a twisted bit of flat that is then cylindrically ground to give the diameter. there is no central support shaft.

    i'll have to try the cheap cola trick... it's only mild surface rust and i didn't want to take an abrasive to them unless 100% necessary. anyone know where you can buy these things??? i can't find anything like them this side of the pond.

    also a set of 10"x 5" with narrower tops and bottoms with an extra pair. a normal set of 10" x 5" and someone wanted me to skim an old bunch of balls which now look like new. .

    i've been doing more skittles as well of course. some big 12"x6" in beech plus 5 1/2" lignum balls. .

    here is one of my more labour intensive commissions i've had for a while. all in all i had to make 12 american ash croquet mallets plus 12 posts made from robinia (i was asked not to paint the coloured the band's), six sets of 10" X 4" beech skittles (not pictured), and 5 sets of draughts comprising of 12 a side, one half was ash and the other was Makore. 120 in total was soooo boring... i worked out that the draughts pieces alone took about 13 minutes for each one so that's about 26 hours for 5 sets which did not include cutting out the blanks. .

    evening all, i recently won a box of slightly rusty augers and wondered if anyone had tips on the best way to clean them up. they are big buggars and am not sure how to tackle them. all have 24" of twist and range from 5/8" up to 2" diameter. any help appreciated. also does anyone know where to buy augers this size?

    old age? how big is the tree? just incase it's coming down i'd be interested in getting it milled assuming it's a half decent stem

    i think it's because it's done at the end of the games nearly and some people have got slightly bored??? i really felt for lutalo muhammed last night, in gold medal position till the very last second... poor git. i really wanted to punch the reporter for asking stupid questions like "how do you feel?" rather than giving him a hug.

    well i know it's coming to a close in a few days so i think i should say how i feel about our british olympic team. :thumbup:Well Done!!! watching the women's hockey, jade jones and mr skelton today makes you proud to be british. we should be congratulating all our olympians on their return home.

    i just bought a 3400mm x 820mm x 26mm bit of brazilian for a bargain price. rarely have i seen boards as wide as these then three turn up at the same time.

    ok then, i thought that the vb had some sort of sleeve that would go in the 40mm post but could take 1" stems.

    looks like it. is it a tree or a bush? if it's a tree coming down i might be interested in the timber if it has a nice red heart.
