  1. macro is perfectly good for exterior applications. it's certainly as durable as cedar.
  2. we should have a definitive answer soon as i've been kindly sent a log.
  3. i bet delabodge will be interested...
  4. why is there a double dot before the co.uk???
  5. once dry £50ft3.
  6. dozens. i'll tell you how to turn the mallet head too if you like. i'll see if there is anything kicking about up the workshop.
  7. is no one able to help with this one? hull is a long way i know but if anyone can loan or hire me out their vehicle it would be great.
  8. as i said, an expert will come along at some point and give you the right answer:lol:
  9. just my opinion but it's in the dark and way too close to the house with its roots covered up. don't think it's ever going to do well. experts may correct me though
  10. hi all, i hope people are not getting sick of these requests yet. there is a large plank of wood in hull. it's 4m long (approx) and 80cm wide. does anyone go from hull (or near) down to london or slough (i'm at J7 of the M4) because if they do i'd like to hire your services. the board can not be cut up for transport as you don't often find ones this size. it must weigh getting on for 100kg. if anyone can help even if i'm just hiring a lorry for the day then please email my website. thanks Steve
  11. they are called long alley skittles and that is the nottinghamshire shape.
  12. i got over a metric ton, do you want to make it from an old lawn bowl???
  13. i got some flint in the rockery if you want to try that:lol: no ivory i'm afraid. if you only want a pair of handle blanks i wouldn't charge you mate. you could swap them for an interesting lump of wood
  14. i used to do that with the sink cut outs we had from work. seemed too good to waste.
  15. technically this is known as curly maple not flame. every tom dick and harry advertise their guitars (whatever the actual figure) as a flame figure and they are rarely flame, it just sounds better i suppose. a true flame pattern is actually just a veneer cut to show the crown cut grain as a candle flame shape or you can call it a gothic arch. it can also apply to the flame of a crotch cut a bit like this. .
  16. if it's native ones you are after then i do have a decent selection of very hard natives. boxwood, judas tree, laburnum, sumach, robinia, olive ash, cherry laurel, field maple, pear, hornbeam and whitebeam.
  17. i've just finished two sets of skittles for a museum in sweden Snus- och tändsticksmuseum ? Snus- och Tändsticksmuseum finns på Skansen i Stockholm! not sure if they are for show or are to be used but either way it's my first international sale. they are made from a hardwood called Garapa Garapa | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) rather than the traditional lignum and measure 7 1/8" in diameter and weigh between 2.7kg and 3kg. .
  18. what sort of sizes are the sycamore?
  19. i must admit that was what i was thinking looking at the bark but i couldn't find a leaf shape to match. if it's a maple there should be some seeds on it.
  20. looks like it may be a swedish whitebeam "sorbus intermedia". not 100% sure though.
  21. if you cut it so it's properly quartersawn it then there is less chance of twist and warp. crown cut boards are very difficult to dry well without serious degrade.
  22. it's one of my favorite timbers, it's a pity it's so endangered. i stopped buying it a few years ago and now only snap up old bits of of ebay that have sat in grandad's shed for 20 years. the paper went down to 1500 grit i think. you need to get a good finish on cocobolo as if there are any blemishes they really show up well when you buff it. you'll notice that the bowl is the one that's in the wood database book.
  23. yes but only very rarely. cocobolo does not need any applied finish as the oils in the wood are good enough to give it a buff. lignum will do this too. also i left a vase made from cedar of lebanon bare as the smell was fantastic. here is the cedar vase and a cocobolo bowl that is just very finely sanded and buffed. .
  24. i only use danish oil and am happy to do a comparison for you if you like. i've used rustins, liberon, suffolk pigments and blackfriars. it goes on all my wooden bowls and i use it for my skittles and balls too.
  25. how many do you need will? i cut my own from my offcuts and can supply a fair few. send me an email if you want me to help
