  1. i'd need to see some pics of the endgrain cleaned up so i can positively id it. then i'd be interested.
  2. ok then, i thought that the vb had some sort of sleeve that would go in the 40mm post but could take 1" stems.
  3. size?
  4. what stops the woodcut being mounted on a VB???
  5. looks like it. is it a tree or a bush? if it's a tree coming down i might be interested in the timber if it has a nice red heart.
  6. if you pick me up on your way then i'd love to help. always wanted to see a tree get milled...
  7. correct, 15.2559055118 circumference = 4.85' diameter good size for a redwood isn't it. should make some lovely boards. be interesting to get a ring count as i'd love to know how long it takes a redwood to get that size in this climate.
  8. see my response on the awgb forum stuart. get one...
  9. mick, why are you not roughing out some bowls to finish when dry? that way you can chuck the ones that have split badly on the fire and turn the good ones.
  10. good spot big j, i didn't see the shake. in that case i recommend wood turning as you get more out of it than you do for boards. firestorm, i'm happy to offer my services... it should yield some great looking blanks.
  11. i'd cut it all in 1" or 1 1/4" through and through.
  12. my brother is like that, he's a bit envious that i can grow one for fun. can't say i like being quite as hairy as i am though...
  13. mine has been very close to that about 18 months ago but have recently gone much shorter. mine would be at least a years growth to get back to it though, grows so slowly it's untrue. pic on its way.
  14. mine is a very thick affair and not a wispy decorative beard and i find it keeps your face cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
  15. you could use a matt epoxy but i'd be tempted to use loads of coats of danish. once the 4th or 5th is dry then it's fairly water proof just don't let water sit on it for too long as it can mark it. if it does then it only needs a brief sand with very fine grit or scotchbright and another coat applied.
  16. i suppose because it's a sedimentary rock it can split fairly easily. at least now i know that for the future.
  17. no i don't, just give it an ample coat for the first one and leave a few minutes to soak in a bit then wipe off any excess.
  18. i thought a blow torch would be ok on slate? i know they use it on granite.
  19. danish all the way mick.
  20. about £100 would be about right wouldn't it?
  21. don't scrap those mate. are they riveted together?
  22. try fire...
  23. i was thinking lime as soon as i saw the leaf but have never heard of tilia henryana before. arbtalk is great for learning new species.
  24. Out, get out....
