  1. impressive gadget. why does it need to be done?
  2. what is the rpm of a drive spindle on a chainsaw? i'm wondering if a motor can be securely mounted to drive the chain or would it be too fast? i have a 1450rpm motor that i was thinking of trying to attach a bar and chain to and put it on the end of a bench so logs could fall into a basket?
  3. "product, product" eeuuurrgghh.:lol: i could never shave properly as my skin won't have it. i've notice the first grey's in my beard and sideburns. i'm getting rid of my ginger hair, wehey...
  4. i thought all us woodturners had to trim their beards with garden shears or you weren't considered a true woodturner. shame on you stuart...
  5. saw that last year, good program isn't it...
  6. alec, clear out your inbox. is anything happening with this elm you contacted me about. with regards to the milling, what alec said...
  7. known as PUP on here http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/pup.html he has some wood that was cut for me ages ago and i would like it some point soon. i've tried emailing him phoning him and PMing him none of which have been successful. does anyone talk to him or see him??? i notice that he has logged on periodically but he's not answered my pm's and i was supposed to make him a nice table in return for the oak. if anyone can help i'd appreciate it.
  8. i'm willing to bet that the turners that most have dealt with are old farts that expect to be given free wood. well i'm not one of those and would happily pay for wood if it's not far away. can i ask if the log merchants or tree surgeons are advertising the fact they are selling wood turning stock???
  9. get it to a wood turner.. how big is it?
  10. when you turn them you just need to leave a small chucking point so that the cuck can grab it once again. all these large bowls (that's my size 12 in the middle) have a small spigot. .
  11. i know a bit about which timbers to be a little more careful with after nearly ten years of turning so realised that i did not need to smother the buggers in PVA and only cover the open pores in the endgrain including knots. along with quite a few others walnut is a fairly forgiving wood in the drying process when roughed out and even on the bigger ones i was happy with leaving the face grain bare. some of the larger nests there (4 bowls) are 24" diameter and given room to move freely they generally don't crack. what more details do you need chaps?
  12. i think i may have to put my old one up for sale and buy this one.
  13. exactly, when you get a gorgeous bit of wood you want to make the most of it as some of the more expensive ones are too good to turn into shavings. i did most of the walnut delabodge gave me with the original bowlsaver and got 101 blanks from it rather than the 20 cut rounds i would have turned into bowls initially. instead of just 9 big bowls i get 30 of all sizes. there is also a financial incentive as the device may cost near £400 but you get that back after coring just a dozen bowls and you can get more return for the same amount of wood. .
  14. what is a madone doing this side of the pond???
  15. that's a tricky one, are they the same tree? the leaf looks like a acer palmatum which is the smooth japanese maple or one of the variants but the bark looks like acer capillipes which is the red snakebark maple.
  16. which species of maple?
  17. that's ok Maek:lol::lol:
  18. ok mate, facts it is from now on... i've written any important event or request in the emails on a pad and put the date next to it so i'll get that into order and have it to hand when composing my responses. rather serendipitously i have come into contact with a fellow woodturner who reclaims money for a living (for the music industry i think) so i am getting expert advice.
  19. i see, well my point is that if they had of paid earlier rather than dragging their feet the job would have easily been done on time. they paid 3rd aug, this money then allowed me to buy the timber which arrived on the 5th. the job was completed by the 22nd. if they had paid earlier i could have bought the timber earlier and all of this could have been avoided. would this be discarded as just heresay?
  20. OK this is some admission of their liability to settle the debt, it means when you serve the court papers on them they may pay this amount into the court. In normal civil cases on judgement if you were awarded this amount or less you would become liable for costs. If you were awarded the full amount then you could also claim costs. However unless there have been changes in the last 20 years the rules for a small claims action differ and as long as you wait until it is paid into court then it is yours immediately as long as you do dot accept it as final payment. This is likely to feature in their claim for a lower (half) price, it could become complicated they would have to show that the delay caused them a cost, if a time was not mentioned in the formation of the contract then it's tort and open to interpretation. An therein lies the problem, the person appointed to deal with the case will have very little time to bone up on it so first impressions of them and you will mean a lot. I have never figured how a case would go right up to the last sentence of the judgement. A barrister I attended court with told me even with a watertight case there was only a 70% chance of success depending on the mood of the judge. This is evidence which you will have to prove This is rambling and hearsay It's likely to go before a recorder. Magistrates are upstanding people from the community, ones peers, who initially hear criminal cases. Do you or they hold the goods? If you cost in the stress and work you will have to put into a small claims case , forget principles you cannot afford them dictate your actions, will it be worth it? IANAL ( usenet acronym which means this advice cannot be relied upon) in fact after 45 years I find myself surprised at being suddenly out of work for the first time i can prove all the facts as they are in emails which i have. why is the deposit not being paid soon enough "rambling and hearsay"? i repeatedly asked them for the deposit so i could buy the timber to get on with the job. again this is in emails.
  21. sorry for the confusion gents, it should say somewhere in the thread that this is a second customer doing this to me. after getting some advice i was told to drop the original dispute as it was not over £750 and yes i do still have the pins and balls which i can sell on. this second customer (it happened roughly at the same time) has all the goods i made for them. eggs, the goods were sent to them as there was no dispute at the time they were collected and i expected to be paid in full. as they have not paid for the goods in full they still belong to me. sorry if this thread is confusing anyone.
  22. they did finally reply at 9 minutes left to the deadline. they have offered less than half the money for me to get lost pretty much, i'm not interested. they are disputing the time that it was finished by. the original job had just the items to make on it and no mention of a deadline. that was introduced about a month later. then they took two weeks to get the deposit to me (i gave many reminders) and i had stated it could take a month to produce from when i received the timber, then they expected all the hand crafted bespoke items within two weeks. i got the deposit on 3rd aug, i got the timber on the 5th and got the lot made and delivered by the 22nd. the deadline was the 16th and i was only told that about a month prior. if they had paid the deposit on the 18th of july (when i sent the invoice) or even within a couple of days i could have stared the whole process two weeks earlier and got the job done well within time. i will carry on this dispute but i think it will go to a magistrate...
  23. ok, i gave him ten working days to pay and the ten working days are up by 5pm this evening. no money has appeared. who is it i contact? the small claims court?
  24. you're giving that one to me aren't you:001_tt2::001_tt2:
  25. most likely a wide belt sander... they go up to 1200mm and i have seen one or two at 1500mm
