as long as it's fairly flat to begin with or you have achieved the level of flatness you require then hit it with a 4" wide belt sander 100grit and after get a palm sander and go to the finer grits.

if it does get removed i'd be interested in the wood for turning, it's a great turning timber...

the bark cross section looks strikingly like some field maple i have... is it ring porous or nice and smooth???

well the bark looks rough enough to be elm but i do not recognise the timber as elm being such a pale colour. i'm not saying it isn't elm but i've never seen it that cream in colour. any chance of a close up of the wood itself and if possible the endgrain. if i can see the grain close up the i should be able to tell what it is. is it heavy?

agreed, more photos (better images too) are needed to identify it. i would not think elm if the name was not suggested... do zelkovas or nettle trees look like this?

just thought i'd update everyone and say that this is the best £60 i have spent that has not bought a lovely bit of wood. i can fit in my trousers, on top of that they are nice and roomy. very rugged design that i hope will last a couple of years at least...

nice job there mate but if that is beech then don't forget to give it about 30 coats of danish to let it last as long as possible.

if it's really straight then i think it's worth milling some of the larger stems is it not.

sounds useful, which species of southern beech are we talking about here? there are a handful that go by the name of southern beech and i assume it's a species in the nothofagus genus but i'd be interested if the exact species can be identified.

well i found out that carhartt don't ship to the uk and have taken you call that big's recommendation for ruffntuffclothing and bought a pair of these, Carhartt Ripstop Cargo Work Pant (B342) they are on sale at the moment so i ordered a pair of 40"x34" which should be big enough as the kind lady on the phone said that they are generous all round. they should arrive next week. thanks for all the help chaps.

i've heard about carhartt before actually but i didn't know where to get them. arborwear aren't cheap are they. nor do they have the size i require in stock:thumbdown: i'll get in touch tomorrow and find out when they will have more.

could you add some links please fellas. i have worn cargos in the past and am looking for some now but i need to get to the shops and try them out.

beau, i have used rustins, liberion, blackfriars and now rye danish oils and to be honest i was never attracted to any particular one as such as i never thought that any of the brands were better than the others really, in saying that i am quite impressed with the mixture john has come up with for the "rye danish oil" and i will be sticking to this in the future...
