  1. just use a wood that is resistant to rot... both wester red and genuine cedar will do the job. 15-25 years.
  2. i thought the public had got so pissed off with christmas appearing early that most places had decided after halloween was when to put up the xmas decs...
  3. no rollers should mark the wood, it's the chips that get caught between the wood and the roller that does the marking.
  4. search ebay for a good old machine, they are often going for very little money but if you have a bit more dosh then get a reconditioned one. i got this one years ago for under £900 fully refurbished does 12" x 4 1/4" all solid cast iron. weighed about 4-5 hundred kilos... .
  5. due to this very circumstance i shall be drawing up my own terms and conditions to cover my backside from now on.
  6. just an update on this, with regards to the skittles and balls case i'm going to let it go as i can resell the products i've made and as it was not over £750 it's apparently not worth it. in fact i can sell the goods for more individually as i was giving a discount for multiple purchases. in the meantime however i've had another customer do exactly the same thing. 5 years of trading and i've not had a single problem then all of a sudden two come along at once. this case is worth following on however as its alot of money and although 50% was paid as a deposit i'm still owed nearly a grand and this week i've given them a couple of days to get back to me and then i'm sending them a polite letter detailing the situation before giving them 10 working days to pay up or i proceed with legal options. i'm not ashamed to admit i hope they pay as the legal options bit scares me a little.
  7. if you get nowhere with that lead then i'd be interested in having a go. are they to be used or just for decoration?
  8. we had nearly a foot of rain in only 6-7 hours according to the news. my virgin V-boxHD has been knackered by a lightning strike... the box seem to work as the channel numbers pop up on the front and i can even turn it off again but the hdmi port is kaput... cable works fine and so do the 3 ports on the back of the tv as i've tested it all with my bluray player. just a bit unlucky that i happened to be watching the tv when a huge flash of lightning struck... boy was i bored from 3am onwards... i have been watching the paralympics but it'll be back to watching some movies tonight.
  9. i don't take any notice of mum when she's like that, she'd jump six feet in the air if she heard a mouse fart...
  10. that's what i thought, it does look quite like the privet mawk-moth but it wasn't quite the same. i only came across the convolvulus one later on. how rare is rare???
  11. we don't get that many lightning storms in the berkshire area but tonight it has been quite active. i've never known thunder and lightning to set off car alarms so easily... i'd love to watch the lightning if i didn't want some sleep.
  12. my mum was petrified when this wonderful moth came in the house. loads of pictures on the net made me think it was a privet hawk-moth but after finding a couple of others i'm thinking it's a convolvulus hawk-moth. anyone?? wing tip to wing tip was about 4"-4 1/2" and was 2 1/2"-3" long with wings closed. .
  13. by chips i mean the stuff that comes from a planer... as a joiner they are chips to me and anything finer is sawdust.
  14. there shouldn't be any need especially if the wood is already wet as contact with the pva will thin it a tiny bit anyway.
  15. just slap a couple of coats of pva on them stu. rough turn them soon.
  16. i thought it was always 1.5m from ground level on a maiden? some trees that are multi stemmed have other guidelines to follow. either way get the circumference at the height you can and divide by pi...
  17. that's them trying to flog it... i had a conversation recently with a guy at whitmores and he said a similar thing to alec. get a durable timber that we have easy access to... get some cedar of lebanon.
  18. i think they only want softwood "chips" for bedding? i used to work with a guy who's daughter had a horse and he would only take the bags if they had 100% only softwood chips and very little sawdust in it.
  19. lots of them are temperate woods. it does say that it's for "lesser known species" supposedly for construction and joinery. apple and elder are not used in general joinery or construction and as oak is a known rater than lesser known species it's unlikely to be on that site. if you wish to view common timbers check out The Wood Database.
  20. yes i'm going to keep the straighter bits for possibly selling as sticks but i won't cut it to ground level as i want to keep it as a mini tree shape.
  21. you should be able to make a bit of dosh to local wood turners as long as the branch material has a good quantity of heart...
  22. if there is no rot in the middle that will be a spectacular set of boards from that tree... i suggest you fell it and assess what it's like in the middle before you get any serious offers...
  23. is it to be felled or are you just curious as to the id? deffo an elm of some sort but i'm not great on my species so listen to others...
  24. sounds like it's just one of those years then. good to know.
  25. it's not the case here clive. i think mr nutkins must have been pancaked on the road as i've not seen one the whole year except for a single time on a neighbours fence. i should have stated that there were no clusters on it in the first place so no nuts to strip.
