  1. carefu if you get one round the shoulder blade as i have one on my back and the only discomfort i ever had was when he was going over the tip of the scapula and i could hear the needle hitting the bone through my body rather than my ear drum. i've a fairly high pain barrier but that stung.
  2. that was poorly worded on my part, yes i meant to say that the end user thinks its poor timber and the mills know this and as such won't take it because they know it won't sell. for me it's down to marketing as the timber properties are very similar to yellow poplar, Poplar | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods) which these day gets used in place of it but both species could be used no problem in my opinion.
  3. sadly because everyone thinks it's rubbish wood no mill will take it. as a matter of fact it's a very useful timber and can be used for a multitude of things. uses include, carving, furniture carcases, palets, crates, boxes, plywood, joinery timber, single piece table tops, stained veneers and inlays, clogs, wooden animals, laminated drum shells, basket making, toggles, bobbins, furniture, cabinetry core stock(to be veneered over), fire doors (core), pit props, table legs, turnery, matches, shelving, door linings, laths, floorboards and even the wide boards used in coffins . a very under rated wood in my opinion. Black Poplar | The Wood Database - Lumber Identification (Hardwoods)
  4. could you elaborate a bit more on what is wanted? is it just a rectangle? is it to be painted? is the lettering to be routed out or to stand proud? is the colour important? what quote are we competing against? (pm me that if you don't wish to post it) are there any images of signs on the internet that are along the lines of what is required?
  5. sounds good james. any lumps will do but i'll need them within a week to process them into bowl blanks and stop splitting. perhaps i could coax you down for an afternoon and i'll direct your chainsaw in return for a few bowls???
  6. and of course i've been making loads of skittles. .
  7. i also made some indian clubs for tomD on here (see his thread http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/woodcraft-forum/100173-idea-wood-turners.html ) and it was quite a challenge but also an enjoyable one to do something different. on top of that the oak ones came out spectacularly good. the big ones are 24" tall and 5 1/2" diameter and each weighed about 8lb 4oz. .
  8. not put anything on this thread for a while so i thought i'd list a couple of jobs i've done this year. this thing is the drum for an "apple scratter" which to anyone who doesn't know is basically an apple pulveriser and will have screws sticking out of it when it's fitted to the machine. i made it for this gent, http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/members/arthurbottlesworth.html it's made up of three 3" thick sections which were themselves two 6"x3"x12". the whole thing ended up at 12" diameter and 9" across the axis and required a 1" hole down the axis for the shaft. given a good coat of beeswax seeing as it's going to be used for food. .
  9. i'd be interested in rings or large branches?
  10. what species is that???
  11. i'm willing to bet that other that 6"-12" either end of the log it will still be normal green timber (whatever MC that is) throughout the log. you can use a router on any moisture content.
  12. now replied to. sorry but i forgot about it, 25 years of epilepsy drugs have given me a very bad memory. thanks for pointing him in the right direction james.
  13. the bessy's and the ones on ebay all have the same problem in my book. the reach is always only about 80mm whereas the 140mm reach is so useful i'd like more clamps like them. the reach only goes up on the bessy's if you buy long ones. the tilgear clamps look well made but they have flat bars and i've always found them a bit flexible when really clamping hard. the same problem is with the axminster ones, they are good for small scale but not for heavy duty clamping. i have ones like theses 2 PACK - HEAVY DUTY 600MM X 80MM F CLAMPS - SOFT GRIP HANDLE QUICK SLIDE | eBay and although they are both serrated the bar is thinner than the fortis ones as is the castings and even the screw thread. this is why i want to try and find them as everything about them is beefier thicker chunkier and just better all round. i'll have to weigh one of them compared to ones i have from ebay which are closer to the fortis ones even than the ones in the link but they are lighter i'm sure.
  14. sounds like you should be a saw doctor yourself if they are that good...
  15. hi all, as per title really. i can't find any for sale or any info on the manufacturer except for this web page. FORTIS ? quality brand for tools and industrial safety - Trade brands - Services - E/D/E GmbH i recently bought an ebay lot listed as 8 heavy duty f clamps and it turned out to be these. F clamps | eBay 300mm capacity and a reach of 140mm. very heavy duty and as far as quality goes they are the dogs ging gang goolies... i recognise them from ones we had when i was still employed and they were the best in the workshop. would be interested to know if anyone knows where i can get some.
  16. of course they are going to tell the others are awful, they want you to buy theirs even if theres is awful too. big j had a good one i think, not sure what it is though.
  17. this is one of the best. .[ame] [/ame]
  18. i have lots of favorite film music on my playlist. 2001 space odyssey platoon adagio of spartacus and phrygia (don't care if it's not in a film) american beauty braveheart walle shawshank redemption green mile chariots of fire crimson tide crocodile dundee the dark knight dances with wolves 28 days later edward scissor hands fantasia pirates of the caribbean last of the mohicans apollo 13 ladies in lavender lawrence of arabia phantom of the opera philadelphia chaplin
  19. no . i'm happy to pay for postage.
  20. any chance of scavenging a log (8" or over please) if it is manna ash. i'd like that species for the wood database.
  21. they work well as slab tables for internals as they dry without too much degrade.
  22. any chance it could be a Manna ash?
  23. that's the one i was thinking of, couldn't recall what it was called. . [ame] [/ame]
  24. sounds wicked, i saw some jousting on a tv show a while ago and i think they were all american but it was all very serious and was great fun to watch. on top of that a knight's tale is one of my favorite films... never understood why golf is in the olympics? all you see on tv is a bloke wiggling his bum at the tee then whacking it, tv camera goes sky, sky, sky, sky, sky, sky, flag pole. polite round of applause..

would a country be blackmailed just because it had no nukes??? what is the point of having a nuclear weapon that is not going to be used? i had hoped that humanity had left the blowing the crap out of each other on a world war scale was left in the last century. has the time not come where we just try to live with the earth and each other. i'm no hippie but i really think the money should be spent on the important things like the NHS.
