  1. assuming you meant 13 feet?, where did you learn to count??? 109" is 9'3".
  2. is nobody in a position to be able to help?
  3. surely all trees bear fruit of some kind to reproduce unless they are male trees i suppose, or ornamental cultivars?
  4. i thought that may shock a few people. as for seeing 50 i've only got 17 years to go. to be fair it's all i've drunk since i was 15. i don't drink alcohol so i can't drink stellas. i thank everyone for their concerns about my health but 2 months ago i got a clean bill of health from my gp since they were worried about my blood pressure. i take life as it comes and wish to enjoy every minute. my pee is usually pale or clear. occasionally yellow if i've not drunk very much during the day.
  5. hi all, i have 3 planks of wood i'd like to purchase on ebay but would need help getting them too me. they are 109" long and 2@ 11" and 15" wide. all are 2" thick. situated in merriott just west of yeovil. shipley is way too expensive these days. i need them delivered to slough. is anyone doing this route and what would you want for transport? if anyone can let me know then i can buy the wood. i'd be very grateful for some help with this as it's a very nice timber. thanks in advance to anyone who may be able to help out.
  6. you don't need a rounding plane at all. spindles should be finished off with the skew. that's how i make anything long and thin like wands and traditional spindles.
  7. i'm guessing it will depend on your metabolic rate and the activity you are doing. i didn't do much on sunday but still managed to drink 5L+ of diet coke. peed a fair bit today but not yesterday. i've a fairly high met rate.
  8. most of the year i go shorts and barefoot these days. haven't had a chainsaw for a year but i'm happy to use a small one like this. don't go barefoot if it's wet. i know i'm only walking round my garden up to the workshop and i wouldn't do it if i worked for someone else.
  9. hornbeams don't have asymmetrical leaf bases. got to be an elm family.
  10. traditional one were but these days they use american yellow poplar.
  11. if this is not your bog standard eucalyptus then i'd be interested in a ring to get a sample of timber from to send to the wood database.
  12. surely this is a fraud??? you just got a real dog to pose didn't you simon? too bloody lifelike to be wood isn't it? wish i had skill like that.
  13. is anyone going from cheshire to slough??? i'll get the trunk to hitch a lift if i can... if no one can take it then i will be interested in trying to get it to me somehow.
  14. how many are over 12-14"?
  15. tell me about it stu, all that lovely timber gone up in flames... i try to rescue as much as i can myself.
  16. i'm no miller al, i just like to use the timber. if clive can do the milling then i'm happy to pay him to do it.
  17. very kind of you mate, and yes i do think it is a result of loving what i do. i'm still amazed at what comes out of a manky old block of wood. just look at the two large ones, knotty and splitt but with a little time and skill they look the dogs bollocks...
  18. who is your nearest miller?
  19. i don't own a mobile so have to do it the old fashioned way and break off a branch.
  20. they were taken with a flash. the oak is a bit reflective because it's 30 years old and rock hard and can be sanded to a nice finish quite easily. both pairs were given one coat of danish oil and quickly buffed but that's it.
  21. as someone who has memory troubles i suggest you just keep looking at the books as much as possible. 25 years of epilepsy drugs have made my memory really crap but i've found if i keep going over some of the less common species i tend to remember them that bit easier. also once i've found an unusual species i like to go back and look at it just to keep it fresh in my memory if i can.
  22. with the slow speed grinder what is the best speed to have at the tool tip?
  23. here are the blanks i cut for them. they were a bit of a nightmare to turn as really old timber (especially oak) is like stone... .
  24. ok, i finally got round to finishing the second pair that i made from an old bit of oak that had been air dried as part of a porch for thirty years. the little pair are within 12 grams of each other and the heavy one weighs 1.137kg and the big pair are only 30 grams (that's 1 ounce) apart and the heavy one weighs 8lb 5.5oz. the tall ones are 24". what do you think tom??? .
  25. pole lathe is not the way to go here. see if you can find a cheap lathe on ebay with a handful of chisels. you only need a benchtop one if the longest you have to turn is only 18".
