  1. attention agg221 alec your inbox is full so here is the reply to your message hi alec, im after whatever i can get realy. it's to be sticked and seasoned first, hopefully for a year to eighteen months before i think of using it. i cant take too much in one go because i still live at home and must respect mums wishes but if it could be stored temporarily then i could take it in a few months. how big is the tree??? i'll need 4 1/2" and 5" sections + 1/4" to allow for shrinkage. cutting patern doesnt matter as it's probably best if it's completely squared and sticked up to dry. colour doesnt matter or sticker marks as i just require a sound bit of wood for a skittle... im out all thursday but you can contact me on friday so if you wish to give me a call we can discuss options. thanks Steve
  2. hi all, i make skittles for a living and need some more timber. can anyone supply me with sycamore and beech in squares or slab form from 4 1/2" and bigger. air dried would be great but green is ok as long as the quality of the wood is good. i'd prefer the timber to come from slightly larger trees if possible. any help is appreciated. .
  3. hi all, im after sawn sections of sycamore and beech in slabs or squares 4 1/2" and up to be used for turning in to sets of skittles. some of my sources are starting to dry up. hopefully some of you with a woodmizer or sawmill set up can sort me out... the larger the tree is the better quality the skittle... can anyone help? here are a couple of examples of what i make. .
  4. hi all, as per title realy. i saw this onebay and even though i try to steer clear from bying anything from china i would find this usefull if it works. Digital Inductive Wood Tree Timber Moisture Meter 4-80% 10 Timber Density ATC | eBay what i would like to know, is it accurate? is there anything i can buy in this country that doesn't cost a bomb? does any one have an old one they no longer need? is it worth me buying this or shall i just use maths to work out M.C. thanks in advance Steve .
  5. i never even knew we had one... where is it? .
  6. could this be it??? Ficus religiosa - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia .
  7. with roots loke that it's gotta be some sort of fig, they've always got ridiculous looking rot going through anything including solid rock. the bark colour matches to (i think) check out the ficus genus on the web... any other suggestions? .
  8. i was bored this weekend with there being no prem games. as a manchester united fan i have no pleasure in thinking about that twerp that got sent off and in my opinion lost us the league as city were strugeling at that time. QPR had to down to 10 men for them to win. on as plus note we have shown everyone just who the best team on this island is... .
  9. the power isnt enough for that particular lathe. try and go for something with a bit more oommpf if you can. i had a 3/4hp sip and it still wasnt powerfull enough for the 14" swing over the bed. i too would recomend the axminster collection. Lathes - Woodturning products from Axminster i now have the jet 3520b heavy duty lathe and this has 2hp. i would recomend the Axminster Hobby Series AWVSL1000 Woodturning Lathe as this has 1hp which is better than most lathes that size. its a good price too. it is also a bit beefier in some of its component parts which is better in the long run as there is nothing worse than weedy bits of metal that can vibrate and ruin you work... dont get a crap lathe for 100-200 quid... i made that mistake once and i wont do it again! youll need to spend upto £350 for turning bowls (just for the first lathe) but if you buy bigger expect to pay thousands. mine cost £2500. P.S. buy the shop flor model as you should get 5% off... hope this helps, steve. .
  10. dont think that it would be a problem, however in my opinion it would be too soft and could get a bit carved up fairly quickly. can you not use a bit of maple or beech? .
  11. The picture is'nt great but i've now seen it on the ibanez website and can confirm that it isnt ziricote. it looks very much like either the freijo timber or its brother bocote. if it was bocote most luthiers would state it as being just that and it hasn't quite got the look of bocote either so i'm going to say that i'm 99% certain that it's freijo (cordia goeldiana) this also has the common names of Cordia wood and rather strangely, Jenny wood... it grows in the forests of the amazon basin brazil and can reach 6ft tall with a trunk diameter of 18-24". widely used as a general all round timber in it's native regions... hope this helps, Steve .
  12. just to go back to the original question of this thread, cordial wood is probably a slight miss spelling and most likely refers to ziricote for which the botanical name is (cordia dodecandra). a relative of this is freijo (cordia goeldiana) which also has the common name of cordia wood. it is most probable that either of these two exotic timbers that the friend means in this instance. if i had a picture then i could almost cirtanly I.D. it no problem...
  13. could be western red cedar??? .
  14. 4" in which species??? how much? i know its dificult to find the wood hence my asking on here, i've got quite a bit green cut and drying but it wont be ready for a couple of years. in the mean time i need some to be getting on with. i managed to get a couple of sources and have been paying £20ft3 max. the boards often have defects in them and as the pins are relativly short at 10-12" these get cut out. perhaps i should have said free of split all over the place as i expect one or two good sized cracks even from big trees and as i said i cut round them. if you ever come accross any please let me know .
  15. hello mark, you can rule beech out as the pore structure is wrong as is the colour. its def iroko. 100% i have found that the paler timber usualy comes from a well watered part of africa and also the uper part of the tree which is lighter than the base wood otherwise it would fall over too easily... muhuhu is used in gym halls and other buildings but its usualy short lengths in parque flooring as the tree is not that big. easy to tell from other timbers as its rock had realy heavy and has no visible pores. turns really well too... not commonly available these days i've never been called a timber ninja before??? but i like it... .
  16. please mill the leylandii as when seasoned its an incredibly versatile timber and very under rated in my opinion. used it in turning and its fantastic. if it could be bought for joinery id be using it for that too. .
  17. if i could see a close up i could tell for sure... beech is an obvious choice and iroko is very much a possibility as it does bleach in the sun but it looks very remenicent of muhuhu to me. be interested to see what it is. .
  18. has no one got anything??? part seasoned would be ok.

  21. hi everyone, as per title realy, i need 4"-6" squares or boards in both species for turning skittles. it must be completely seasoned and free of splits, spalting and too many major defects. i'm happy to cut out a few bits of knot or crack here and there as im well aware that with timber that thick it is only to be expected that there will be a few flaws but it still needs to be pretty good stuff. if anyone has any or knows any one who does i would be happy to buy it. any help is appreciated... i can be contacted on 01628 666191 or you can email me through the skittles website (below) or PM me a message thanks Steve .

  25. no, im about 20 miles away from london, maidenhead united or wycombe wanderers should be my team if i was to support the locals which i dont but i do like the underdog and find myself willing swansea to beat everyone (exept man u) and i'll give Reading a cheer if they win but i think they are going straight back down again... i must give Bradford a nod whilst were are doing this as they've done briliantly this year and i hope they beat the winner of the swansea chelsea game. go Bradford go... .
