  1. has anyone got any semi air dried oak that they could get a couple of 2m posts from that doesnt have the heart in them? big j's offered to cut me some fresh but just thought i'd ask around before i comit myself to wet timber. i would much rather it be partially dry. any help is appreciated. Steve .
  2. hi all, as title really i need to know how much anyone else would pay for 5 sticks of norway maple 20"-26" diameter by about 4m long. they look nice and clean other than the forks at the top of each stick. i've never bought trees before and wish to know what it will cost me any advice is appreciated and thanks in advance.
  3. im not so sure on that id as i just tried to zoom in and the leaves look longish with a rounded tip. im thinking walnut. can you provide a closeup of the leaves... .
  4. no matter how they do it (mate that is) their huge benifit is that you dont have to look like jonny depp to get lucky... .
  5. rather predictably moyes has just been appointed as sir alex's successor and i really hope that he can do what most people will think is impossible and win again next season. title number 14 here we come... good luck mr moyes... .
  6. please lets not turn this in to a rant for people as i was trying to convey my gratitude and respect to the best manager this country has ever seen... could everyone else keep their comments along the same lines.... .
  7. so it is. cant believe i didnt realise that.. what a plonker hey.. thanks. .
  8. found this in my local park but didnt have my cameras with me so snaped off a small branch and tried my best with the camera. as i looked a little closer i thought that the a symetry of the leaf base looked elm'ish but i've never seen those seeds? on the branch like that before. the bark looked very elm like as it was incredibly coarse. any help would be appreciated
  9. as a life long manchester united fan i am saddened to hear as i woke this morning that sir alex furguson has finaly retired after bringing the premier league back to its rightfull home. the manchester united world will be in mourning for a while and think what you will of the club if you support another team but surely no one can deny that he is the best manager the world has ever and will have ever seen. thanks sir alex for your years of service, it wont be the same with out you. .
  10. i simply use my bench grinder that is fitted with a 40mm wide wheel that i use for my woodturnung tools. probably not the best way to do it but i can get a good sharp edge that can be touched up with a honing stone if needs be. does the job... .
  11. looks like something may have tried eating the bark (deer?) but im no expert on this subject. if you do end up felling it i would be interested in the timber. .
  12. £90 per bag is a bit steep isnt it??? am i the only one thinking that seeing as elm is alot rarer than it use to be it would be better to mill it in to boards rather than splitting it for logs. really nice boards can sell for quite a bit and surely you would get more that way than you would if it was turned in to firewood.... .
  13. hi john, i'd be interested. pm sent. .
  14. i'll second the poly-x vote. it is brilliant stuff as slackbladder said and the best thing is that most things just wipe off so for a dining room table its probably one of the best to use. .
  15. sorry to hear that you had a few probs with the bandsaw, i hope its not been too costly... let me know when you are ready to send me that sample. did i give you my address??? .
  16. personaly i would be quite hapy for us the have the summer we had last year (without too much rain) as the heat was perfect for physical work but not cold and the humidity was not low enough to split all my timber. as its slightly cooler this afternoon and about 50-60 % humidity another 12 months of this and i'll be happy:001_smile:
  17. surely 30-40" butts should be milled in to boards. it looks like you could get some nice wood out of trees like that. why turn 1-2 hundred years if growth in to firewood??? .
  18. i live in taplow and may be able to take some. how much could there be?? 01628666191 [email protected] .
  19. nice to see the process there alec... i must say it looks incredibly clear sycamore and i am very pleased with that... should make excelent quality skittles... .
  20. a couple of bodies is always an interesting find when your walking through the woods plus making one is really easy... .
  21. i've just been introduced to osmo oil products and think they are great. the poly x stuff is realy good as it will repel things like wine rings from the bottom of bottles. i bought a tin of the clear satin matt 3032 and its great stuff as it basicaly dries as a wax finish and doesnt need to be sanded of for any refinishing as you just apply the next coat on top of the last one. i've also used their exterior uv protector 410 which is suposed to repel water by letting it bead up and drip off. i would have thought that's whats your after and that it would be ideal for chainsaw carvings... i have a tin of that le tonkinois stuff but never got round to using it, would be interested to hear how the tests go. in my experience varnishes can be tricky to apply well unless you are a finisher and know what your doing, oils are much easier... .
  22. clive i've got an ancient old gate post about 10"x10" mabey4' long that is at least 200 years old and rock hard. is this of any use or are you after the natural shapes of the branches??? .
  23. i must thow seasoned lelandii in to the mix here as i had my cuttings from the bottom of the garden and they were the best i've had to date... yew is great too. .
  24. i've not got the collins so cant compare but i've found what i have realy usefull. they are, trees in britain europe and north america, by roger phillips. 220 pages the complete guide to trees of britain and northern europe, by alan mitchell. 202 pages the illustrated encyclopedia of trees of the world, by tony russel, catherine cuttler and martin walters. 510 pages a field guide to tree of britain and northern europe, by alan mitchell. 416 pages collins nature guide to the trees of britain and europe, by g. aas and a. riedmiller. 250 pages all come in handy at some point or another. recomend all... hope this helps .
  25. thanks for all the advise so far guys. chippy's one bought for a tenner is acctualy the one i own at the moment and to be fair it's not been that bad but i've just gone in to buisness properly in the last couple of months and could do with one that i am confident is correct. im turning skittles and genraly need to buy wet wood in the sizes i require. wood for skittles does not need to be kiln dried but i just need to be sure that what i use is low enough on th o'l moisture before i comit it to becoming a pin. if its too wet then it will spilt from top to bottom. i had this with a pair of 12x6" sets that i turned for a lady in somerset and everyone is now fire wood so i need to be sure that im turning pins that are at least well air dried... .
