Yeh recommended fell. I can't imagine birch has much capacity to compartmentalise against it and there seems to be a general consensus that once fruiting bodies become visible decay is normally fairly advanced. Its the first year its fruited on the alder, as I visited to take a look at that last year and it wasn't visible. Went back to price felling the alder and some ash today and spotted it, then tucked away behind some grass on the birch too. Will be putting 5 day notice in this week

Seen today at a clients property. The area around the trees was cleared using a mini-digger a few years ago, which may have resulted in some root damage leading to colonisation. The alder is also in decline from Phytophthora alni. Shows again that the fungi don't always stick to the hosts listed in the text books.

No but I may pop back and get some next week as I'm curious to have a dig around and see what the decay is like in key roots. The trees in full leaf, looking well in that respect. Two very large scaffold limbs at acute angles and with weak attachment though, particularly with the decay readings we took from beneath the branch junction of one. Beech that was being monitored. The pale fruiting bodies started appearing last year and have come with more frequency this year. Resistograph indicated fairly substantial decay but was also a little inconclusive. We were of the opinion the fungus is ganoderma but would be interested to know if anyone had other suggestions? Anyway, the tree was awaiting a tomograph but my colleague went back last week to discover the Merip for the first time. along with some fairly substantial crown defects it looks like the tree will have to be felled.
