  1. And the answer is...roots! Thanks for all your help and advice. There are approximately 50 and the the furthest is about 30m distant from where the neighbour cut down his acacia a couple of years ago.
  2. Many thanks for your input. There was an acacia about 20m away in a neighbour's garden. It was cut down about two years ago, but the roots must be thriving!
  3. Here's the goat willow in the background with the saplings in the foreground. The goat willow has alternate leaves while the sapling leaves are opposing. So definitely not the same.
  4. They are in the root area of what I thought was a goat willow. Is that the same as a false acacia?
  5. I have dozens of these popping up when everything else is dying back in the drought. they look like saplings, but are they? Thanks for your help!!
  6. There seems to be conflicting advice on burning holly logs; many say they burn well green, others say they must be well seasoned. What is the expert view? Thanks in advance.
  7. Thanks! I think you may well be right; my only reservation is that the tree is about 15m high, which would make it a very large example indeed.
  8. Thanks for the replies. I realise it will burn when seasoned, but my concerns are: a) Whether it will spit like pine. b) Whether it will coat the chimney with 'creosote', again like pine.
  9. Obviously a tricky one: 141 views and no replies! Do hope someone has the answer!
  10. I've taken down a Dawn Redwood and because of the relative rarity of the tree, there seems to be little advice available on whether it is suitable to burn in a fireplace. Some say it will coat the chimney with creosote like a pine would, others say it burns well with a nice crackle. Any advice? Many thanks.
