I remember as a kid going over some abandoned land near us . ( I am going back 60 odd years ) there was a big old willow next to a natural dew pond and we would collect newts , frogs water boatmen etc etc . It was before they were protected obviously . Some had a bright red belly and were green on top . There were sheets of corrugated iron lying about and we would lift them and catch mice and slow worms and stuff . Its all built on now though ....

Sounds like an air leak from somewhere that gets opened up when the av is stretched slightly . Could also be crank seals letting air in .

Other way round Mick . Hardened then tempered back to a suitable rockwell value for the intended use . Then finish ground .

You may see a graft line on the lower trunk . Its a cultivar I think . I know if you prune lower branches the leaves will revert to the rootstock comon Beech .

I was a member of the " small brown car " owners club . You get free track days at Goodwood . ?

Huge increase in the round wood market ( including oversize ) round here . All three estates ( Goodwood , West dean and Cowdray ) Have been felling all road side and footpath ash so as not to be liable should there be an accident . I'm talking thousands of tons here .
