1. hi, just been through all this small timber trailer with 3.6mtr crane and quad,if your ground you intend to work is relativly flat and dry ok but if its got inclines and slightly damp forget it,i rolled my trailer 4 times in one afternoon (back to the drawing board) and hydrostatic compact tractors are not that good in forestry work either,i have just spent a small fortune on what i think is a fairly good set up 1.5 tonne trailer now widened to increase stabilaty and uprated to 2 tonne and pulled by a kubota 40hp 4wd tractor all works well at the moment but lets see what happens when we get some rain and it gets sticky as its pulling up a 30-35 degree hillside .
2. hi how big of an area is it ? and where are you we could may be help you out 07763013024.

5. Hi all just reading your replies S,P is right it is hard graft, when we started in jan i used to smoke i DONT now and my thighs are now solid its done me the world of good and the best thing about it i love it, job satisfaction i think they call it as money is not every thing in life and 7-800 quid a week is not that bad is it? we have just accepted another 9 monthes work doing simular thing but we can buy the timber this time
6. Hi been sorting some infected larch out on some simulare ground, ringbarked some and felled others, no snedding or cutting to lengh just brash of bottom 5 or 6 foot and fell as they are to be winched of next spring and we where getting £1.50 a tree, we averaged about 100-110 trees each a day, best day we had, one man brashing one man felling total 255 trees for the day 8 till 4.30pm.
7. Hi all, as bald eagle stated may be from ribblehead, but more than likely from crainlarich at the top of loch lomond as there is 2 trains a day come down the west coast line past our house and 9 out of 10 of them belong to UPM Tilhill and will either be going to shotton paper for news print or cronaspan for chip.
8. Hi the NPROS and Lantra tickets are not reconissed by some of the bigger forestry co and the forestry commision will only accept NPTC CITY AND GUILDS and get him to do cs30/31 together as it works out cheaper, just put 2 of my ladds through cs30/31 for £425 each.
9. hi just done a cs32 (large tree) ticket today that was a NPTC (city & guilds) top ticket and the only ones to have, for future ref if your guy leaves and goes in to forestry work the only tickets the fc and some other forestry co accept are NPTC They wont accept lantra or your NPROS so he would have to do it again, and if he does cs30/31 together it will be cheaper than doing them seperatly ,just got 1 of my lads through his cs30/31 for £425 as our next job is on a fc site, hope this of help to you.
10. hi pete we are a team of 2/3 subing to a large forestry co and we have had the same questions asked ppe, first aid ,and spill kit fortunally they supplyed a spill kit,all they are are absorbent mats approx 300mm x 450mm all we do is fold one up put in poly bag and staple the top over so it does not get wet and put it in your bag then its there if you need it,but talking to anothere team and they used puppy training pads from pets at home
11. i think this could be a good thread,in my late 40,s my self, and the youth of today dont seem to be what they where 20 yrs ago and they dont think the same eithere, one young lad who worked with us abt 20 years ago over heard me and another guy disscussing mesuring some timber up the cubic foot, 2 wk later the fresh faced 18yr old rings up at abt 10am cant come in this wk been to the doctors as my foot is all swollen and i have a cubic foot and have not to walk on it for a few days as to let the swelling go down. i still see the lad, and it has and will be a long standing joke for many years to come as i always ask him, hows your foot.
12. hi do the same myself with the ibc crates and stack them 3 high using a old sanderson forklift on the 3 point linkage on an old david brown 780 works very well for me.
13.
Hi John, No not as yet, all so pm about bothe his jobs but no reply have you been trying,if so have you had a response ? regards Gary.

14. hi bill i got told about a spray called septiclean and used it on one of my dogs when it ripped its back leg on some barbed, sprayed it 3 or 4 times a day and was healed in about 8 days, because of the antiseptic content when the dog licked the rip after i sprayed it, the aniseptic was then in the dogs mouth thus killing the bactira in the mouth, then when the dog licked the rip it was not transfaring bactira back to the wound thus making it heal faster its about £8 a tin and availabal from farm supplie stores like coares or carrs billingtons, hope this helps, used several times now and it does the job.

18. Thanks again to all who replied, some good points pointed out, some of you may think it strange that the hardwood stand i mentioned was planted at 3-31/2 ft apart rows are about 6ft but i can stand there with my arms out and nearly get a hand round a tree on either side of me,trees i would estimate at 45ft + very straight and hardly any canopy on them it looks a fairly easy job to me (been on a lot worse) thanks again.
19. hi thanks to you all who replied with info on rates,i have a good solid foundation to work on now,the hardwood thining is approx 30 yr old and average 10-15" all striat with very little canopy as they where originally planted a 3-31/2 ft apart and the softwood is clearfell approx 10 yr old 6-10" bothe on fairly flat ground, i was thinking in the region of 12 - 15 tonne per day per man. thanks again for the replys.
20. hi all, is there any one out there who can help and point me in the right direction,as in a previous post i stated that i had just the job of thining some hardwood and felling some softwood stands on a local estate,i have got a small team together 3 of us and none of us know what to charge ?, is there any one who could help me on this subject ? and wether it be on a tonnage or day rate any help would be greatly appriecated.thanks for reading,
21. hi you mentioned peugeot 406 estate, i have one a hdi 90 and had it nearly 4 years now and i have put 68k on it,it has not been nursed if i am on the mway its doing 80-90 mph,i flat the seats down and get 15 bags of logs in it,tow a 19ft orkney boat with it and a 9x5 trailer loaded with logs, its not been 100% reliable but what is ?. had a clutch in it £230,discs n pads all round £110,exhaust £90 and a small elec problem wire touching metal and worn through 20p of insulation tape but these are all wear n tear but not at all expensive when you consider what i use it for, and it still averages 42.3 to the gallon
22. Hi the 070 looks a very good copy,it says new but there looks to be a few scratchs on it and if it was an original 1960s stihl 070 new old stock bought with it original bar it would say made in west germany on the bar and not just germany.
23. hi, shoot nearly all year round but try to leave june july and august out if i can but if some one wants me to shoot on a fallen crop then i will, current guns are a lincoln premmier o/u 20g that i use for all most every thing fron rats through to decoying geese, othere guns a zabala 12g s/s 3" , s/s 16g and the one i have had so much fun with of late is a airarms s410 pre charge with 10 shot mag, been shooting rats and jackdaws on a local beef farm and i have been very immpressed with its performance,
24. hi h/wood s/wood or a mixture or any thing in particular ? got some oak and chestnut cut in to rings and some 8ft lengths of larch and d/fir just north of preston
25. Hi all, just landed on my feet for a change, i have just secured a deal with a fairly local estate for a supply of both h/w & s/w cord wood, the deal is they are getting a harvesting co in to remove all the big saw log timber on 2 clearfell sites of h/w and then i go in fell and remove whats left which i would est to be approx 150-200 tonne of firewood, this can be stored on site for as long as i need and just pay per tonne as i lift it,there is allso 5 smallish sites that i have to thin as and when i have time in the next 3 yrs and est would yeild approx 50-60 tonne each, only problem is old ,narrow, weak bridges (bridges built for horse and cart) i was thinking of a small ATV forwarder with 3.2 mtr crane and power pack has any body got one used one as i have looked on youtube and there seems to be several out there to choose from, all comments good and bad on problems, build quality, stabbilaty, wheel size etc would be appreciated. i have cleared a site befor on this estate with atv and small timber trailer and got 47 tonne in 5 days to hardstanding but that was all handballed then 2 days to get it home with tractor and trailer i paid them £10 a tonne, first load over weighbridge at 5 tonne then just guesd the rest does this sound a good or bad deal.?
