  1. Thinings are a bit harder than clear fells , you have the kit to do the job ,we have just got a 180-200 tonne clear fell job been told its just firewood so bid £12 a tonne at it but its mainly beech and descent trees 500-750 dbh which ain't firewood to me its furniture timber which doubles are money so a little different also got a small thinking job for back end of year but only about 30 tonnish. If its your first job at this game do it you will learn as you go along. Wet that's the vain of my life at present and with forecast over night up here probably up to my knees I snow tomorrow.
  2. 15p a tree is not bad just get your bag loaded head down and keep going 1500 - 2000 a day and your making good money . A few years ago there was a program on TV called worlds toughest jobs one guy was 5000 trees a day for 12 wks then had 40 wks holiday.
  3. £15 cube extracted ? You felling and extracting it with your kit ? .is it a clear fell or thinings and what is £450 a day for I.e how many men and machines ? £15 a cube is bang on the mark for hardwood and you should be able to make money out of it at that .
  4. Softwood nothing wrong with it at all ,I tend to burn more softwood these days as customers just seem to be so brainwashed that it is no good, so I will sell the hardwood to customers at a premium price and burn softwood myself , currently on Lawson cypress burns well and smells fantastic. Most of my work is in commercial forestry so I have more softwood than I know what to do with but do have a do at selling just softwood at reduced rates in may June July & august and seem to get rid of a fair bit.
  5. Hi we have never had a felling licence through in ten weeks last one was 5 1/2 months if your tilhill or euroforest it may be ten WK but tilhill and euroforest proberbly apply for several every WK .
  6. Hi I have used a Nissan cabstar for last 9 yrs and can't fault it, its the old 3 ltr one pulls like a train no matter how much weight I put on it, very good in tight spaces, fairly good on fuel, body is 10x6 ft and put 3 cube on it which is a slightly heaped load.
  7. Hi good pair of boots working in forestry should last 3-4 years if looked after mine are the basic still ranger and had for 4 years now, soles are in great condition with plenty of tread left ( no tarmac or concrete to where the soles out in the woods) but insides are now going done new pair coming soon which will be meindl wood walkers.
  8. That's a shame
  9. In Lancashire nearest place that you may know of is garstang and timber located in bleasdale.
  10. £70 cube would work back to £63 per tonne for larch saw log's which is not far of the mark may be a bit steep but haulage distance will reflect on price. Where selling dry windblown spruce and lodgepole pine @ £1100 + haulage full wagon and drag weight will be around 20 tonne ish .
  11. Good result that simon we have some oak coming down on the job where the big beech trees are if your interested in them ring me I can take you to look at them if you want .
  12. I wish I was, went out with her when we where about 14/15 1st base and that was it, however I will see her on new years eve and get grope and a tongue lashing , can't wait,
  13. Yes we don't need to get out of the chair to order a take away these days just eat and that other one and there are probably more of these apps but the big question to me is in years to come what will all this cost are already stretched and crippled NHS, it won't be millions but more like billions of pounds, as let's face it the bigger you are the more pressure there is on all your body parts and organs.
  14. I have to agree on this subject, 30 years ago I spent a lot of time delivering for a landscaping co round the northwest and fat birds where thin on the ground back then, nowadays there seems to be plenty of them, its all down to the life style of today and all the crap food they eat ready meals takeaways pizza etc, there's a few lasses I grew up with that are still very tidy and all had kids and i would say fall in to the MILF.com category, and one in particularly stands out who has 3 children and 3 grand children but has a figure that a lot of 20 year olds would kill for.
  15. Just having a wild guess I would say, Oldham ,
  16. So you use a 461 for 3" conifer's ? as you obviously don't own a smaller saw. We are currently felling 80ft spruce on a 45° bank, the saw of choice for me is a 241 (girls saw) uses half the fuel of 461 and 2/3rds the weight and gets the job done and I can still carry it after a 9hr day, there is a saying in life that is very true and that's WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER I use my 461 for severing 3' diameter windblown spruce and processing over size and that's its job.
  17. Mine are but they are not haix and looking at what has just happened to a colleges haix boots I wouldn't buy a pair the rubber cushioning on the heel has just disintegrated at 15 month old and that's in forests all soft stuff no concrete or tarmac.
  18. Nissan cabstar 30l tilper was £178 last year gone up this time to £202 fully comp only me to drive but not shouting about the price as its cheep done through quote line direct 01618744180 give em a ring as I have past several people on to them.
  19. Hi yes I Have one and apart from a bit of trouble with the m tronic box at the beginning its been fantastic and I can't fault it at all, I cut firewood with it (about 120-150 tonne per year, and when we go felling its the first saw I pick up and I have felled some fair old larch trees with it like 30" + , I run it on a 14" bar and find that the best combination for the saw , I bought the saw for a job we got felling 2400tonne of infected larch on a steep banking and I wanted a light pro saw with a decent power to weight ratio and this is the one, other lads pick it and use it and they allsay the same, f--k me that's a ballsy little saw, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another hope this helps you out

I am with you on this one Gary , some climbers think they are the Bs n Es and same as yourself in my third decade now, I have worked with quite a few climbers over the years OK some have been OK ,some better than others and some others ,well what can I say, my granny would of been better, in any job qualifications are one thing but experience speaks so much louder, it takes many years to gain that experience, but every now and then we come across a climber that is different, a out 3 yrs ago I had a lad for several jobs I wished I had come across him a few years before but unfortunately he moved to france. About a yr ago came across a young lad with his head screwed on the right way, he is not a good climber, he is what every one would look for, he is safe ,efficient and very well mannered with customers he has a very mature head on young shoulders very rare in this day and age. The young lads coming through today like the starter of this thread how are they to gain confidence in what they do if the team leader slates them and they get paid crap money ?, I don't knoiw what people expect but you have to remember we all have to start some where, just ask yourself what where you like 1 yr in ? ? ?, New groundie £70-80 a day if he is OK £90-100 and if he is up to your spec may be a bit more , and its like a lot of other things in life you get what you pay for , I have seen adds on here for brash monkeys ,em, and they wounder why they can't get any one to reply , personally I wouldn't dream of asking for staff in that manor , as I just see that as a non starter.
  24. 391 Nothing like a 460/461, to put it bluntly 391 would be like a donkey racing a pure breed race horse with the 460/461 being the pure breed race horse.
  25. From past experience buy from your local dealer because if any thing goes wrong I have always found you get a better after service on a saw that you have purchased from them (as you are a customer of theres now)as compared to a saw bought else where. I use a relatively new 660for milling on 30" bar and find it fine for the little I do with it.
