That Ruston engine will of done a few days work in its time and would probably do a few more with a bit of TLC, made back in the day when we made things properly and had a engineering empire, it would of sat there all day popping away powering that rack saw and only used about 2 gallon of diesel for a full shift,

sounds about right for todays world ,,

TBH not so many fail, i know a lot of guys with saw tickets and only know of one who failed and he wern,t safe near a saw yet alone use one, i take it you got 2 days left on felling and processing so you got plenty of time yet to correct things, just keep your cool and dont wind yourself up about it as thats when things get worse,, you will pass and as brushcutter said listen n learn,, I wish you the best of luck,,

I watched it last night and thought the same, not interested,, 4 police officers i attendance for a £700 ct off saw ??

Well Saturday I had a good day, took sone firewood out, went back to yard and loaded wagon with approx 5 tonne of timber to deliver in morning for customer to cut n split his self , then had a hour in building splitting logs,, called in aldi on way home and that's when the day went sadly down hill fast,, 4 young coloured lads 20 25 ish in front of me laughing a giggling like school girls and I presume taking the piss out of people as they walked round, then one who was stood in middle of isle with his phone up infant of him videoing and talking to phone, as I passed him he said to phone this is my new bennifit phone,, then when I was at check out they was on self check out still making plenty of noise, I looked across like everyone else did and noticed they where all dressed in nice clean new tracky bottoms trainers and decent coats, I just thought to myself it's silly c - - - s like me working Friday sat sun Mon between Christmas n new year to pay for the up keep of these people who are o a free ticket, now that got my back up, every year fir years I have made a point if putting 30 40 in RNLI box and same in air ambulance but RNLI won't be getting any this year as its all being used in the south east corner of the UK rescuing the dingy,s and I dont really want to help there case, sooner starmer is out of number 10 the better,, we need a big change ASAP,,

Looking at the amount of forestry on Mull, if you was the only one there with kit i would say you would be laughing, but you wont be and believe me your kit will never compete with the big out fits, i have a simulare set up to yours and find a bit of work for it (South lakes, North Yorkshire and in Lancashire) most jobs the tractor and trailer go on are our own jobs where we have bought standing timber, the plus point of small kit is it dont make much of a mess, I think if i was you i would spend a bit of time up there doing some home work, asking a few questions, checking firewood suppliers out and a bit of door knocking dont cost owt but you could learn a lot by this,, there probably not much hard wood on Mull but i do know there is a lot of badly managed birch and oak around loch Awe,, I wish you well with your venture and like i said above if you dont ask you dont get,,

last 260s made where in 2009, the 261s where 2010 onwards, the 260 is a cracking little saw and last for years, your problem is probably the clutch and a saw well worth spending a few quid on,,

if thats the mileage from new and it was my van it would of been changed at least 4 times by now, said this for a long time now and mentioned it a few times on here over the years, oil n filters are cheap compared to metal mechanical moving parts, perfect example is a lad i shoot with who treated his self to a Izzue pickup 19 plate i think, 400 mile past its 15000 mile service time and it snaps a con rod then 8 grand later its back on the rd, as Swinny said sod the long service times,

I still don,t understand how they got in ?? as i have not yet spoke to any one who voted for em ,,we are just on the tip of the iceberg at the moment and one thing for sure is, that the good ship Britainia is starting to sink,,the budget says it all hit them who are working hard as they have money?, if any one watched questiontime last thursday there was some intersting points made on there, one women who asked a question employed 60 people in the UK manufacturing but she all so had some over seas, think she said it was going to cost her 1.6 million now to keep her UK factory going, so her train of thought was to move it all over seas, thats not good,, One guy i have been buying timber of for several years owned a estate of some 3800 acres incorporating 8 farms and several renal properties, i have some timber left on this estate and a few wk back he rang me to say he had sold the estate and was moving to the Isle of Man, i said thats shocked me and he replied has it, yes it has, but at least the estate and money my family have worked for and built up over the last 5 generations will be safe and Mr Starmer wont get his mitts on it and give it to the un washed,, i think this guy has done the right thing by a country mile to safe guard his wealth, and i take my hat of to him,,

Another vote for the Airarms S410 here, i borrow my dads now n then and when i first used it some 10 yr ago i was so impressed with it i found it hard to believe that i could stone rabbits with it at 50yds plus, the gun now is some 12yr old and still packs a punch and has been very reliable, again i would say 22 over 177 due to the ease of loading the magazines, the 177 mags are to bloody fiddly for me,,

Need advice! Large Ash widowmaker

Looks like it could be a bit of a exciting challenge that one, couple of decent ratchet straps, couple of slings, a good snatch block, a tirfor winch and a couple of hours should sort it out,, ratchet straps round bottom where its split, the use of the correct slow release cut to sever it, by the looks of it it wont roll out in a month of sundays, sling round bottom of main trunk,, snatch block elevated up the tree behind and drag backwards n upwards and it should drop, -
i would guess that the black paint is bitumen, and bitumen is the way i would go for 2 reasons, 1 it goes on well and will protect the metal well, 2 its a log store and the black bitumen on the tin will absorb heat during the day and this will help dry your logs out, back in the late 70s i worked at a local sawmill and the old guy had a tin lean to on the back of a building that was just painted with bitumen and this really warmed up in the day, some days it was my job to barrow some logs across and stack em up in this lean to and some days the heat was unbearable, he just called it his solar shed,,

Well done and i suppose that will be 3 homes Angela can tick off her list,, just crack on with it and get done what you need to keep the planning in place ,,

TBH i woudnt just put a gasket on it as it looks like that has been leaking a while, if its a machine you use a fair bit do the job right regardless of cost, get it skimmed and valves re cut while its off, the V1205 is a good old school engine and was fitted in a lot of machines espeicialy ransom mowers,,if it had been a V1705 i could of helped you out as i have a recon head sat hear,, where abouts in the country are you based ?? i do use 2 engineering shops up hear in Lancashire and both top class places,, i have just had a head refurbed off a David brown 780 3 cylinder skimmed valves re cut and 3 new valves supplied along with all gaskets and it was £186 ,,

There was some chippers and a fair few of them that ended up in auctions up n down the country about 6 years ago, these chippers where from councils up in Scotland the 2 I looked at where totally fooked underneath and both needed the chassis rebuilding, this I suppose was due to salt on the roads up there,, one that I was very interested in was from Strathclyde and all looked well till you looked underneath, can't remember if ut was the diesel or oil tank that was set in between the chassis rails and the tank was virtually porous, yours could be one of these, ??

Basically as what Dan says, over the years i have found felling live trees and then felling dead trees are 2 different games due to several reasons, firstly dead trees dont tend to have much weight in them, second dead timber is very brittle and if it is rotten as you say. the control with hinge direction will be near on zero,

yes, as the tracked ticket takes in refitting and re tensioning the track correctly if one is thrown off,,
