  1. Some of em could be worth more than face value, as mike says above, Christopher collects,, i watched a few of his videos and yes they are interesting, some coins where struck with defects, some years are low mintage, these are the ones collectors will pay for, i just recently emptied a tin and put all the commemrative coins to one side and the rest i will go through one day,, its a 1933 (i think) penny you need to find as only about 12 where stamped with that year on and worth about 70 80k,,
  2. All the older tractors and machinery where very over engineered and as the saying goes built to last,, bloke in yard next to us has 5 fast tracks and there is a JCB van there nearly every wk ?? But it's the same with anything mechanical all the damage can be done in the first 2 or 3 years from new if that machine is not looked after correctly, buying a machine from a big company ? Or buying a may be older machine from a one man band owner operator , for me it would be the later as I feel it would of been far better looked after, Diggers are a good machine in forestry but are only as good as the operator sat on it, we use a 2,7 tonne digger and it has its place where its worth its weight in gold as some jobs it makes such light work of things ,, only issue is rubber tracks and stumps as you just need to watch what your doing and keep off em or you will spend half a day putting tracks back on ,,
  3. Thats a 65 million dollar question,, Forestry is about the harshest enviroment you can put machinery in to, and when when you look back at what machines have been used in forestry work over the years in the uk some things just speak for there selves,, after the war is was the green standard Fordsons, then came the E27 Major, then the Major E1A, power major ,super major, then came the Grandaddy of em all the County,s, as far as i am concerned the county 1164 and 1174 where probably the 2 best machines that have gone in to forestry work, all ways started no matter how cold it was, cheap to run for what they where, and when it came to repair,s they where cheap to repair and easy to work on, and as one old guy told me many years ago simplicity is reliability, there are many old Majors and Countys out there that are still doing a trouble free weeks work, the machines of today are just like our cars full of electrics and sensors and that to me just spells trouble at some point in its life,,
  4. I will keep this as short as I can , so Friday late aft I get a call from the vet that Asha has started eating a bit and vet said she was very happy with her progress and felt that she could come home, so went to collect her on sat morning at 11, when I got to the vets I was pulled to one side abd told that Asha had gone downhill dramatically over night and was in a bad way , when we went through to where she was I could not believe what I so, she didn't know who I was, her eyes where very pale, and her stomach was heavenly swollen and the most noticeable change was she was very jumpy and nervous, not a nice thing to see and what a way to go for a young dog at 30 mths old that was showing so much enthusiasm and prommiss, so I had to make the dession that this was the end and put her to sleep,, not nice at all, so I am a bit pissed off ATM took my 2 yrs to find her and she been with us 2 and a half yrs, R,I,P Asha,,
  5. Go for it as you wont have any thing to loose, and as the saying goes nothing ventured nothing gained,, i did something simular way back in 1980/81 buying, refurbing and selling Yamaha FS1E,s, the sports moped of the day, it put money in the bank and bought me my first van in 1982, happy days, But you have a big advantage over what and when i was doing it and thats the internet, as today every thing is at your finger tips on most mobile phones, parts supply, information and if you get a bit stuck on a issue there is generally a video on youtube to watch and put you right,, Just go for it,, and i for one would be very interested in how you progress so please keep us posted,,good luck,,
  6. Good to see a young man making good use of his spare time and changing it in to something useful as well as increasing his bank balance, most 15 yr olds around me are just weed heads and a waste of space,,
  7. Just a update,, Well a lot has happened since last post, all this started a wk today since when Asha through her tea up, Friday she was drinking a lot more than usual abd bringing it back, sat she started passing blood so of to vets and treated for a viral infection and suspected rat poision consumption, sat and sun she was very lethargic and now drinking very little, started syringing water In to her mouth o Sunday, Monday back to vets bloods taken and results back over night, Tuesday when results back ut was in to the vets again abd Asha put on a drip abd been there ever since, last thing she ate was a wk ago but just had a report from the vet abd she has eaten a little today so fingers crossed we are coming out the other side now,, its as I said to some one today if a labrador don't eat for a day it's ill yet alone nothing for a wk ,, all been confirmed as rat poision ingested and we just been to get her eating now to clean her gut out,, not be long before she is out charging about and doing 100 mile a day,,
  8. Yes, them men had balls of steel, and thats for all off them, they guy where i cut my teeth in forestry and in a saw mill was in a tank regiment in north Africa under the command of Montgomery, the things he told me in the late 70s early 80s about his war antics where of great interest, he told me about being hold up about 30 mile from a German fighter base, they had 6 tanks all como netted up out of sight and they where there hold up for 3 wk just waiting for the wind direction to change before a early morning attack on the fighter base, when they got there there was only 12 planes there, when they left there was 12 destroyed planes all fuel burnt and viechiels destroyed and a unusable runway, after this the 6 tanks split in to 3 groups of 2 and went in 3 different directions to make the search harder for the germans, all the tank regiment guys survived with just 2 wounded, 80 degrees in the day and minus 15 at night, every credit to em ,,
  9. Yes East kirkby, its owned by 2 brothers and it is being fully restored it was forecast that it would of been flying for the 80th aniversery of the Dams raid but Covid put a stop to that like many other things,
  10. biggest problem with a lot of quads you see for sale on the likes of flebay or market place is a lot of them have been nicked and all ID removed, personally i would be spending a bit more and buying from a reputable dealer,, good luck and be careful, its not that long since a local farm to me had a quad returned that had been stolen in 2009 with only 3 miles more on the clock than it had when stolen,,
  11. Thats what i mean , but you or me place the cameras to moniter deer population, or in my case ATM with a property we own thats still in the stage of probate being granted, the cameras are placed to monitor the rodent population, i wont print what we have captured but they do work,,
  12. Not a very good attempt,, it will be just a log fairy with his new Gardentech chainsaw from B&Q, or who ever it was ain't got a clue what ther doing, they world is full of them, wildlife cameras at access points but only put there to monitor deer population, its there tough shit if you catch someone,,
  13. That's the Lancaster that was at Blackpool for years, NX611 and not a bullet hole in it as it never so active service, it is well on the way to being airworthy once again,,
  14. we use one for getting about on sites, some days its worth its weight in gold, i put a box on the rear of it and all so have another for on the front rack, we all so have a small trailer with quad wheels and cage sides, well worth there money but be careful on steep ground with em, slow and steady wins the race many a day,,
  15. Eh just not healing up lime it should as it should it is slowly, Then you know what it's like at times !! Things just go from bad to worse as I had to rush back to vets yesterday with my young dog with suspected consuming either dead poisoned rat carcases or the rat bait it's self so fingers crossed that she pulls through,, very lethargic, and shitting blood ,, so not good,,
  16. Only 2 airworthy Lancasters flying at the moment, one in the UK and one in Canada, but we do have another one that is under restoration at present in Lincolnshire and this one was stored in a hanger on squiersgate airport at Blackpool for many years, a mate of mine was working for the council in blackpool and they was at the airport doing some work and they went to this hanger and there stood this lancaster, he has some photos of it and i will see if i can get them copied and post,,
  17. Nice that one,, What year is the triumph ? has that one come back to the UK from the states or is it a UK bike,
  18. bigger high spec tractors can travel at up to 60k, its the trailer axels, tyres and brakes that is the issue, i would just go on to www.gov and check it out on there,, i was at a machinery sale not long since and lad i was with was looking at a trailer and all he said was tyre bill would be well in the 100s before he got home with it, old trailer in very good condition with old style low speed tyres ,,
  19. Documentry just started on sky documntrs called Lancaster and there is a few interviews with Johnny Johnson,,
  20. All lads I know have held off this year due to prices, only litter I knew of was a litter of labs and they where a grand, if I hear of owt I will let you know,,
  21. Personally I think that is expensive ATM, digs in lockdown went mental price wise, then every one who had a bitch thought we can make a few quid and breed pups hence flooding the market hence prices fell, for £1500 today it must be so.ethi g very special and very well bread, I would think £750 - £1000 for a top bread springer, lab or cocker is about the mark,,
  22. 80 years ago today on 16th/17th May 1943 19 specially modified Lancasters with 133 crew on board left our shores and headed for the German dams in the Ruhr and Eder valleys, each plane carried a special made bomb, at first called the bouncing bomb, then commonly became known as the upkeep, in the development of the upkeep it was found that this bomb would be dropped from a hiegt of 60ft with a back spin of 500rpm to ensure it skipped across the water to avoid the torpedo nets protecting the dams, The objective of this operation was to destroy the dams and slow Hitlers war machine down as this area of Germany was very industrial area manufacturing for the German war effort, It was agreed by Guy Gibbson and Arthur Harris that they would fly to the targets at a altitude of 100ft or less to avoid German radar detection,, These planes started leaving RAF Scampton at 21,28 each with 7 crew on board and the 4,1tonne upkeep plus incenderies , they left in 3 formations with each formation taking a different route to 3 different targets, First target to be reached was the Mohna dam and this was found to be guarded with anti aircraft guns so made the mission more difficult but it was destroyed at 00,28 with the fith upkeep dropped by Dave Maltby, Second target was the Eder dam and this was destroyed by Les Knight at 01,52am, Third target was the Sorpe dam and only 2 planes reached this dam and on reaching it the steep land around the dam made it a difficult tarrget to attack, however it was unguarded and the dession to fly along the dam and release the upkeep with no back spin on it, the 2 upkeeps dropped here where by Joe Mccarthy and Kenneth Brown, the dam was not breached but it was heavily fractured,, Was it a succes ?, yes it was as it destroyed 2 hydro electric power stations and caused heavy damage to 7 others, destroyed and damaged dozens of factory's, railways, mines and halted steel production by over 50% it is said that a estimated 1600 people killed, all this slowed Hitlers war production down and was claimed to be a big turning point in WW11 for us, On this operation we lost 8 aircraft and 53 airmen with 3 others taken as POW,s, personally I have the upmost 100% respect for these brave men who fought for our freedom, One statement that makes the hair on the back of my kneck stand up was said by radio operator George Chalmers who flew with Bill townsend, George said he looked out of his porthole and Bill was flying our Lancaster down a fire break in a forest below treetop height,,, First photo Guy Gibson, Mick Martin and John Hopgood leaving RAF Scampton at 21,39 all loaded up, Second photo Gibson, Martin and Hopgood just coming over the Dutch coast , Third photo enemy coast ahead skipper, Forth photo Dave Mattby, Dave Shannon and Hennry Maudsley under fire heading up the Nothsea canal, Fifth photo Joe Mccarthy under fire on the same route as Maltby, Shannon and maudsley, Mccarthy,s plane developed a coolant leak and was assigned to a reserve Lancaster and took off some 34 minuets late so there for flew solo,, Sixth photo Dave matbys run in under fire at the Mohna dam Seventh photo was on the morning of 17th May 1943, last plane home to RAF Scampton was Flgt Sgt Bill townsend who landed at Scampton at 06,15 here he is under fire making his way out to the north Sea on his way home, Eighth photo has to be the last, here we see Joe Mccarthy dropping his upkeep at the Sorpe dam, below the pilot in the glass bubble was bomb aimer squadron leader George leonard Johnson who was known as Johnny Johnson by all that knee him, Johnny Johnson was the last member of the dams raid to pass away and sadly he passed away on 7th December 2022 at the age of 101, so that would of made him 22 years old on this mission, my hat goes off to him and all that took part in this mission Guy Gibson who lead the mission was only 24 at the time, well done lads,, I hope this is as appreciated as much as it is by myself as these men all went down in the history books as this being the most dangerous bombing mission of WW11, I have 100% respect to all involved on this mission called operation chastise RIP all of you,,
  23. yes i got pissed off with hearing all the old UK Eurovision entrey,s today on R2, Lulu, Cliff, Sandie Shaw etc never herd em for years but today sure made up for lost time, i think i could on the Kari oki and sing Boom bang a bang with out looking at the screen, so changed to Heart FM,
