In 1949 George Orwell predicted in his novel called 1984, he predicted that big brother will be watching you !! and i dont think he was wrong ?? so be very careful what you text, email or msg to others,, we are submitting all our info to the government little by little every year now and i am sure it wont be long before they know what time you start moving in a morning, what time you have a dump, what time you eat etc,, Will some one please correct me if i am wrong here, but was it not China who introduced a movement app on all mobile phones when Covid broke out just over 3 yrs ago ?? i seem to recall it in the news but did it ever take off and work ??

Personally i think chainsaws are amazing things when you compare them to other machines that are much bigger,,When we where cutting infected larch day in day out we flog our saws 4,5,6 days a week and again with only one issue and most days we put our 5ltrs through em then home , one way i compare saws to other machines is, is if you was sat in your car doing 60mph for 7 - 8hrs a day for 4,5,6 days a week how far would you have travelled ? One saw i bought new (mentioned above) and was using on the Larch jobs went tits up one afternoon and was dropped off a dealers on way home, saw was sorted out day after and collected on the way home, when collected i was given a print out on the saw i,e how mant times it had been started, how much at idol and how much at 50% and how much at 100% and total running hrs, now this number supprised me at 418 hrs with no issues till it failed to start, in that 418hrs i might of put a new plug in it, so if that saw was compared to what you could do in a car for that amount of time makes em pretty robust little engines really, 418 x 60mph = 25080 miles and something else to consider is the piston in a saw is a lot smaller than one in a car and most cars have 4 of them and then the piston in a s saw will be going up n down 3 or 4 times faster than the one in the car,, so with all that said i think they are pretty amazing little engines,,

Its a sign of the times i am afraid, rising living costs and no wage rises, and its only going to get worse, Sorry, if we do a job where joe public has either car or foot access we dont leave any thing that can be moved, we just leave it standing, a mate has just extracted some decent oak saw logs to track side and some bunt has been on the stack and cut 2 or 3 rings off about 20 logs and wheeled out in a barrow, hence cameras are now up at access point and timber stack,,

Daughter and son in law have just ditched there sky package that was £116 a month, they came to the end of there contract at the end of march so they gave sky there 28 day notice that is required, sky came back with a offer for the same package for £65 a month, this went on for about 3wk via email and phone calls and skys final offer was £27 a mth for same package so John asked sky if they where still making money at £27 and they answered yes, so he just said i now feel i have been ripped off by sky for many years and i wont be renewing any services with you again,, since this i now know of several who have gone down the same rout with sky, my broadband is due to get changed soon, so i will keep an eye on this thread,,

50-100 trees down,, when timber is down like this it can be very difficult to estimate the quantity, from what you have said previously and thinking there is hundreds of tonnes i think you will be very dissapointed to hear that from the size of trees you describe they wont even be a tonne each and then if it has dieback even less weight,, Has this job been stopped for a reason ? Is there a plant health order on the trees due to disease ? If no plant health order is there a felling licence in place,, just be careful as you will be getting blamed for all of it if the other guy has fallen out with land owner, but like others have said why did he not finish the job ??

Large Drill bit for steel rod bracing approx 1.5m trunk
spuddog0507 replied to Tommy O's topic in General chat
I am hardly going to go and spend £360 on a drill and another what £60-£70 on a battery and charger to drill 2 holes, it was just a one off project that I did and managed to do it , OK first SDS drill burnt out but it came to me free of charge as it was left under a bed in a rental property I helped clear out, new one I bought was a hokicoki or what every there called,, but I am a big believer in having the right tool for the job and if it was something I was doing regular I would not think twice about spending the money on the right kit fir the job,, -
You say hundreds of tonnes ? if you could give us some dimensions of the timber, ie diameter at breast height and a rough length of the main poles along with a rough estimate of the plantation size, some of us could give you a good idea of what amount of timber there is in there, at i guess i would say the bulk of the timber is 10-12" dbh and some a bit bigger depending on spieces,, 10-12" dbh hardwood is very saleable at present,,some photos would be nice as well,,

Large Drill bit for steel rod bracing approx 1.5m trunk

From past experience of boring a 25mm hole in some oak at a depth of 550mm, it wernt good to do but i was going with the grain, i think across the grain would be easier, use plenty of candle wax on the auger bit and for gods sake keep pulling the auger out to clean the hole out or it gets blocked up and the auger goes solid, (had to split one length of timber to free the auger) and take your time as i burnt a £140 Boch SDS drill out after 2 holes,,,, -

Yes its madness really,, the guy who obtained the slings for me was a mobile fitter for the civil engineering co, but unfortunately now retired, i would get a phone call from him and he would say, there taking the compound down tomorrow on such a job and there is all the 4x2, 4x4 and about 100 8x4 sheets of ply all going in the skip if you want some lads will load you up just drop him £20 on the load all, its ridiculouse what the big Co,s just bin but its like you say skipping it will be cheaper,,
-
Slings i would say should be inspected on a regular basis regardless of age, for what we do with them and how some get treated is a bit beyond belief at times,, i was once asked to get a bag of slings out of a van one day, slings where minging ,covered in white fluffy mould/fungus with the added stench, when getting the 2 slings out needed for the job personally i would not of used them, a odd nick n cut here n there along with outer canvas ripped, i have 2 bags of 3 tonne slings that came of a big utility job and the job spec by main contractor stated one lift only with the slings then in the skip,, madness,, but in reality its not when your lifting something thats 5 or 6k and a pair of slings is £40,slings are cheap really for what we do with em and i think should be replaced regularly especially if working with staff on the ground and swinging timber and in or around public places,,
-
Think them lads need some driving lessons, him in the van several attempts to reverse in, and well him in the digger, well just say no more!! all i can say is i bet he did,nt have any Tonka toys as a kid,🤔,, Good stop that, nearly lost his digger but gained a van and trailer, my mate had a 6 tonne Kubota nicked just out side Bolton a few years back and Plod didnt want to know, reported stolen at 6,48am case closed 8,37am,,

That grab is fine, I can do a lot with it like push, drag, rake and stack brash with it , rip stumps out with, reinstate ground we have chewed up a bit, moving and stacking logs is fine with it, it does take a bit of getting used to but for the price which is about 1,2k I call it a good piece of kit, loading wise its fine and we loaded the trailer below in about 40 mins a few week back, front 2 bays 2.5mtr and the back was 5mtr lengths,,

Yes i looked at the Riko ones and some others supplied by ryteck, then decided to build one it was originally built for use behind a quad but spent more time on its side than on its wheels do we redesigned it for use either at 4ft wide behind a quad or at 5ft,6" when behind the tractor, 3tonne on it when behind tractor but some times it will of been more, 3mte beech n oak thinnings soon start adding up,,

Tractor and trailer does ok for us, i was working along side a log bullet mini forwarder on a job 2 year ago and i could move at least twice as much at a time and when your on a long haul it makes a diffarence,, then there is the resale issue as well, a small tractor will appeal to a much larger selling audience than a purpose built forwarder,, i think i would get back what i paid for mine and about the same for the trailer and crane, we use a little 2,8t digger with a fixed grab and it works well in thinings as we stack the timber ryde side and windrow the brash with it as with it being a fixed grab you can rake or push brash with it which i find is very labour saving,, Going to look at a job next wk where some windblown has taken a drystone wall down so its price for windblown clearance then rebuild the wall, could be 25 -30 tonne of timber which will be ours for the removal of it so tractor n trailer and the winch come in to there own in this situation, we will sever the trees and winch back in to the woodland whole, then sned and process with in the wood hence no brash to drag back, it all works out most days then one day you get every thing going wrong !! get your trailer with crane then make a braket up to swap grab between trailer and digger, but when you put it back on tractor put half a gallon of oil to dump out of grab n rotator as you would be putting hydraulic oil in to the back end of your tractor which aint good but the other way your UTO out of tractor in to digger would be fine,,

Read most of the above and some good points made, i have a small outfit that i use on mainly our own jobs or salvaging wind blown timber that we have been paid to sort out, as most of the work is generally down footpaths with in blocks of forestry from 100 - 900 acres it makes cense for us to run a small tractor and forwarding trailer, we all so have a Igland 4.2 tonne winch for it as well, it all seems to work well and even tho when it comes to the timber salvaging its at my expence but it works, main of the timber we salvage we process in to firewood our selves and sell on,, the trailer i have is about ready for a bit of a refurb and the crane needs a bit of attension as it was only one of the cheaper ones and was bought to do 2 jobs but thats 10+ yrs since, knowing what i know now i would not skimp on the crane as there is some very good small cranes out there today, only done a few paid extraction jobs with it and i was charging £28hr with a £2 a mile transport charge 1 way, i like extracting with mine and only problem is getting me off it,,
-
Yep no lying in bed this morning,,if that is a genuine add and that's the price ?? It is dirt cheap,, it would cost about £800 to put a set of decent tyres on it,, parts would not be much of a problem as there is a few guys up n down the country breaking this size of tractor now,, iseki seem to be one of the better built smaller tractors and are up there with Kubota,,

No tip off to the police, the body was seen by a local lad walking his dog, there is no formal ID as yet and i would say that will be tomorrow, we will all get to know who it was, but there was a lad in Lancaster called Dan Hives that went missing on 10th December, again by the river Lune and not the Wyre, never seen or heard of since ? it is quite possible this could be him yet and not Nicola as the Police have not said weather it was male or female ?, given the high tide time today at 10,25am and the hight off 9,4mtrs which is quite big along with a stiff SW wind for the last few days this body i would say has been out at sea and come up the river on the leading edge of the tide, Body was spotted floating at 11,35am !!!

Just had a simular issue with a truck, steel tank tho and there was loads of a brown like jelly substance, we got some out the tank and left it in a jar and yes when we had that frost a few wk back it did freeze up,,we just drained the tank and put a camera in it and there was a substancial amount of what looked like brown frog spawn on the botton and sides of tank along with a fair bit of rust so just bought a new tank,,your plastic tank would steam clean out ok,,

Not right sure what volunteers are doing ? but i need to ring a lad i shoot with in the morning as he has something to do with organising search areas, i will keep you posted,,
