  1. Yes a guy who does my diesel pumps & injectors up here for me has one called Lancashire bomber all major based except the engine which is out of a 1980s ford cargo truck, the engine as original would of been some where in the region of 120-150 hp but he has it now pumping out around 800hp and all that going through a standard major back end, tells us a lot about how things used to be built as compared with our throw world we live in today, and another thing about the old stuff is it so easy to work on, another guy i fish with over on the east coast has a 54 E1A major that he launches a 28ft boat with of the beech, i would not like to say how many times that tractor has been stuck and left on the beech for the whole thing to be submerged in salt water for 6-8hrs, when tide receads he then just goes and recovers it back the to the compound drains all fluids changes all filters messes about with it for a few hrs refills every thing and he is then back down beech launching his boat again with it, but he will of done this so many times over the years he will know every dodge there is,
  2. You cant have to much power, there is a few angles of how to look at this with old school kit, 1,, they are not to expensive to by now, for your budget you would get something that is fairly decent, 2,, this age of machine was built when the UK was booming in engineering and most things back then tended to be made out of proper steel and not tin foil, most machines of the 50s/60s/70s tended to be vastly over engineered and thats why they are still about and in use, 3,, most machines of this era tended to be very simple and in my book simplicity is reliabilety, and with them being very simple it makes repairs very easy to do and parts do seem to be very cheap, 4,, electrics on the older machines tended to be very very basic as well and dont tend to give any trouble, 5,, what ever money you spend today on a older machine will be a wise move as it gives you a machine to work with and that machine will be going up in value as you use it so its a win win situation, i have a old 1970 David brown 780 that works round the yard, it had loader on front and fork lift on the rear only let me down once in 11 year when some arsehole ran it out of diesel but back up and running in about 10 mins, all ways starts even in the coldest weather and when the beast from the east came lad in yard next door has 4 fast tacks a few loadalls and a old Bonnser side loader, he managed to get one load all going and the bonnser was the only one that started on its own, my 780 started ok, its nothing fancy but it does the job it was bought for and for me its worth its weight in gold to me as it really makes things very easy for me, The other tractor i have is a 1990 Kubota l3250 which is of simular size to a grey fergi but the Kubota has a bit more going for it, again it is very simple on the mechanicial side, its 40hp, has 4WD, very manoverable in tight woodland, pulls very well, has a shuttle gearbox which makes life very easy in a woodland, it has a full cab with all glass, it has a cab heater and best of all it has a wireless fitted that works, all in all for me the Kubota wins hands down but that is for what i am doing with it, Going back Fordsons where the first choice by many people to work in forestry the old green standard fordson then the E27N then the Majors and then later the countys which are still being used by many today, this should tell us something that the Fordsons/fords stood up to the abuse a lot better than many other makes did,
  3. Well said and thats my take on it as well, got 3 Stihl dealers with in 12 mile of me and 2 husky dealers and 2 Echo dealers, for me my nearest Stihl dealer 1 mile away wins every time, Ok it may not be the cheapest place but not that bad, bought a few new saws of him now and if i need any thing its usually in stock, and last time i took a saw in for repair it was half 4 one afternoon and got a phone call day after at 11am, its ready to collect, i cant argue with that one,,,
  4. Hi ring this lad up he breaks cabstars up and he knows what he is talking about, he is based in sommerset some where allways a prompt service of him, Cabstar Uk 07530 232473,, hope this helps you out,
  5. I, I, whats this then, a Scotts man giving something away ??? Has this Covid got to you or is it the cold weather we are having ?? stay safe mate and we will have a catch up soon ,
  6. The FC used to do them but i have a feeling its no longer available, not the cheapest of books either, last one i got about 7-8 yrs ago and about £40 ish after lending some one my other one that never came back,
  7. What price you looking for ? for it to be removed from site asap,,,
  8. Saying that your NPTC qualified and being NPTC qualified is 2 totally different things that could be miles apart, with out seeing NPTC cert,s when i employ some one i just take it with a pinch of salt till i see that certificate, the travelling people will tell you anything and just fill you full of bullshit just to do a job like yours, sorry but its not good at all, i would be ashamed to send a invoice for that work,
  9. A lot depends on what timber it is but to give you a rough idea, chip wood which would be the bent, twisted partly rotten timber stuff that is stacked to one side when extracting and a few years back this timber would of been left behind for mother nature, but today it has a good value, 3 months ago this would of been around £70-75 tonne roadside, but has dropped a bit of late but i am sure it will rocket back up in the next 3-4 weeks, saw logs usually demand a bigger price than chip wood but they have both been on a level playing field of late,
  10. Any one worth there salt can make a decent living out of forestry work, with out the ear ache from the customer, We buy blocks of standing timber, go in fell it, extract it sell it its easy but as you say you know jack shit about forestry so leave that to them that do, you need to know your market on timber like who will but what spieces of timber and where you can get your best price for it, this is something you will not learn over night,
  11. spreading faster than Covid these tip sites today , wont be any room for owt else,!!!!
  12. its just mould and it will generally start on the outer sap wood, Scotts pine i find is about the worst and it will start to show in a couple of days after felling, Larch is another one thats bad for it, a mate of mine milled some Larch cladding and 24 hrs later was showing the blue mould,
  13. Thats a big chunk of timber, biggest problem is moving it, the one your standing against if thats 10mtr long and a estimate of mid diameter of around 125cm that would come in about 10.5 tonne, that would take some moving even if cut in to 3 x 3mtr lengths, most cranes on timber wagons would not lift that ? then there is ground conditions to cope with as well, mill in situe and move with smaller machinery, its a shame really that so much timber like this just ends up as fire wood and it shoudnt do but some times its the only way to get the job finished,
  14. Things like a 170 with 25" bar to cut 6" softwood could only be in America, i dont know what it is over there but they all seem to need to have the biggest saw they can get there hands on but are only cutting small timber for firewood, One guy puts posts on another site and sorry but i have to laugh but he posted some photos of a FS350 pick up loaded with lengh,s of wood ready for splitting, this had took him and his 14yr old son from 9,30 - 3,30 and they were parked next to the stack of timber, but he did say they only had a short lunch break !, looking at what they had done and the shape of them 2 i tend to think the lunch break was from 11 - 3,
  15. I seen that one, its just OTT to me,
  16. Stateside they would run a 42" bar on a MS170 but it would have to be ported of course, the big thing now across the pond is a Barkbox exhaust mod and some of the crap i have read about this item and the improvements it makes to a saw, i cant believe the manufactures have not thought of it ?, 20% increase in power on my 20yr old 036 running a 30" bar and she rips,,,,,, thats the type of comment i have been reading,
  17. Yes i am with you on that one, like you say money is not a issue these days as my life syle is very cheap, i only really need to do 2 days a wk now a days as out goings are minimal, i have a plan for the future which involves a bit of driving to and fro and pulling leavers at each end which will make life easy, as long as i can get out and work my dogs on shoots next season, do the odd tree job, a bit of windblown clearance and sell a bit of firewood i will be happy, all the best and take care,
  18. Well as exciting as it was, Happy new year to you all, as some have said The Tv tonight was crap, about the most excitement i had was from about midnight for about 20 minuets when the fireworks where going off i had 3 labs, 1 pensioner at 13yrs, 1 fully paid up member at 6yrs and 1 trainee at 20wk old all running from kitchen to living room and back again several times and then just sit and stair at me as to say can i go and get it thats the 2 older ones the pup came back on its own a few times and the look on her face just said WTF is going on here, what have them 2 had i haven,t
  19. Not had Airstreams i have only ever had the woodwalkers which last me for about 5-6 yrs a pair but we are only on the woodland floor so no concreate or tarmac to wear the soles,
  20. Oh thanks mate, No seriously I want less worry not more at the moment, As i get older i want things to be easier as i dont feel like doing as much as i did a few years back, this driving 50,60,70 miles each way is not getting any easier either, all the best for 2021 as i think we are going to need it as i think there is come life changing changes just round the corner for a lot of people, take care,
  21. Hi have you had Meindl boots before ? just that i have all ways found them a very tight fit and need to get either a half or full size bigger than any other boots i have bought,
  22. Hi does that run a 3/8 or 404 chain ?
  23. We get in to north yorks quite a bit working, What are you actually after ??
  24. If you put another couple of candels in there could you get it down to 3-4 month !!!!!!
  25. still a fair bit of larch round me with only the odd block being infected, there is some blocks about 2 mile from me that are some decent sized trees like 600-700 DBH but they are on on one hell of a steep banking above a river, i only know of one block that has been taken in last 12 months with in 20 miles of me, 5 years ago we was every where felling them and on some sites we fell 100s of tonnes of what i would of said where very healthy trees, on one site where they harvested approx 3000 tonne and replanted with spruce has loads of regen larch coming through and we left a small block off about 200 trees that where in a very bad place, them trees are still there and are 100% fine but where earmarked to come down, So did the FC get things right or not ? i tend to differ on that one and think we felled trees that where not infected and in some good sheltered areas to, One site we felled about 600 tonne of 20-25 year old stuff over about 5 blocks and there was only 5 trees that had been confirmed with PR on that site and they where about a mile to the east of the blocks we felled, i tend to think we felled these for no reason ?,
